So I guess the big question is, what exactly *is* this site?
Is the idea for news about upcoming mods etc, or is this a place we can put our details of upcoming competitions etc?
In the longrun, obviously.

Good question, i would assume that this site is designed to be the hub between SD/ID/ATVI and the community. Who knows though ;)

Isn't that what places like totalqw are for? The question is is atvi competing with community run sites.

I've got a feeling they will work with them rather than against.

Its not going to be a war or anything but you can't take away from the fact that this site is trying to become a community site.. naturally competition is created since for example there is a news section.

difference is that this news site is pretty much the place where the news is announced first
as the official site, youre also going to have a ton of random crap going on, eg spammers and complainers. the alternative fan sites will have more tightly knit groups and focused discussions, though they wont have quite the same user base
my point was they can promote other community sites by linking their content.

Yeah, I can't imagine that this site intends to, or would be successful in, defeating the other community sites around.
There's always going to be a market for websites like et-center or crossfire, with more stuff tailored to the comps, teams, and players that are in your scene.

I think these are justified concerns and hopefully I can clear them up.
As noted in Paul's introduction (http://community.enemyterritory.com/index.php?q=node/29), this site is not here to replace our numerous fan sites, but rather to provide a portal to them - a place new visitors can come to and see what's going on in the ETQW community and the fan sites. Think of it as a sign post.
I should also note that this site is being run by Splash Damage and we're extremely mindful of and committed to our community. We'll be working closely with fan site leaders, tournament administrators and the like to make sure they've got everything they need to realize the things they want to do in their local ETQW communities. This is also why we created the GVF - a special group containing the very people we want to support with this site.

I'd tend to think of it as a central hub for ETQW, a central focal point where all can gather and share information FOR their site.. and help promote their own site as well.

I'd certainly say that the SD forums regulars who are posting ET:QW topics there would definitely move to this forum instead; whether that was an intended affect or not. Of course, this will unfortunately mean more work for the mods on this forum...

I wouldn't imagine that's a huge problem. If anything, it's one you'd gladly take :)

haha I work at TotalQW and don't see this site as a threat at all. We could always just hit news off each other.

I am very glad to hear that badman. Its always refreshing when the creators of a game actually care about their community. I especially like the fact that you will be working with tournament admins to get the competitive field all set up, I hope the competitive scene grows to become a fun community.
Keep up the great work guys!
BTW, maybe I missed it somewhere but, what is the GVF? Aside, of course from, "a special group containing the very people we want to support with this site." ;)
