View Full Version : Workaround for account creation / login connection problems
Lekdevil.NL

This is a workaround intended for people whose ISP is inadvertently blocking the Demonware traffic. Symptoms of this problem are:
"Connection reset" error when trying to create an account.
"Connection reset" error when trying to log in.
NOTE: This is not a workaround for people getting "disconnected from online services" when retrieving a server list in the browser. That problem is caused by bad or misconfigured router hardware; use the forum search function to find posts about that topic. If you can get to the server browser, this post is not for you.
Summary:
The workaround will encrypt and tunnel all traffic to the Demonware authentication and lobby servers, using the Tor (http://tor.eff.org/) IP anonimiser network and the ProxyCap (http://proxylabs.netwu.com/) proxy tunnelling client. Tor is Free Software, ProxyCap is 30-day trialware. Instructions for using SocksCap, a free alternative, instead of ProxyCap can be found in this post (http://community.enemyterritory.com/forums/showpost.php?p=226148&postcount=650).
By encrypting the Demonware traffic, the ISP's packet shapers will no longer be able to (erroneously) classify and drop the sessions to the Demonware servers.
Disclaimer:
Nothing is guaranteed in life, except death and taxes. While this workaround has seen some limited testing, you mileage may vary. Chances of things breaking on your PC are low, but make sure you've got proper backups in case things go south. In short: take responsibility for your own actions.
Instructions:
What you'll need:
Tor/Vidalia/Privoxy bundle: http://www.torproject.org/dist/vidalia-bundles/vidalia-bundle-0.1.2.18a-0.0.14.exe
ProxyCap installer: http://proxylabs.netwu.com/download/pcap303_x86.msi (32-bit) or http://proxylabs.netwu.com/download/pcap303_x64.msi (64-bit, not tested by me).
After downloading the required software, follow these steps:
Run the Tor/Vidalia/Privoxy bundle installer.
In the "Choose Components" screen, select "Vidalia" and "Tor". You don't need Privoxy or Torbutton, but you may install them if you want. See the image below:
http://www.xs4all.nl/~lek/tor/tor-install01.gif
Accept all default options (click "next" on each page, then click "finish").
Run the ProxyCap installer, accept all defaults.
Reboot your PC when the installer prompts you to.
After the reboot, open the ProxyCap settings by right-clicking on the ProxyCap icon in the Notification Area and selecting "Preferences...". You'll see the preference page:
http://www.xs4all.nl/~lek/tor/pc-config01.gif
On the "Proxies" page, click the "New proxy" button and fill in the following values, then click "OK":
http://www.xs4all.nl/~lek/tor/pc-config02.gif
Your "Proxies" Preferences page should now look like this:
http://www.xs4all.nl/~lek/tor/pc-config03.gif
Continued in the next post (4 images per post limit)...

Continued from the previous post...
Select the "Rules" preferences. It's still empty:
http://www.xs4all.nl/~lek/tor/pc-config04.gif
On the "Rules" page, click the "New rule" button and fill in the following values, then click "OK":
http://www.xs4all.nl/~lek/tor/pc-config05.gif
Your "Rules" Preferences page should now look like this (see also post #6 below to add an extra rule when tunneling just the auth traffic isn't sufficient):
http://www.xs4all.nl/~lek/tor/pc-config06.gif
Add another "rule", using the same settings as the first one, but using IP address 209.131.119.69 instead (so you'll end up with two rules in total).
Click "OK" on the Preferences page to accept the new settings.
Do this to verify whether the tunnel is working properly:
Open a command prompt (Start -> Run -> CMD.EXE)
Enter the following command: telnet etqw-180.auth.mmp3.demonware.net 3074
You should now see an empty command prompt window with a blinking cursor in it.
Now open a second command prompt.
Enter the following command: netstat -bn
Look up the connection belonging to your Telnet session. It should look like:
TCP 127.0.0.1:xxxx 127.0.0.1:9050 ESTABLISHED xxx
[telnet.exe]
Verify that the Foreign Address is listed as127.0.0.1:9050. If that's the case, then your traffic is properly tunnelled via Tor. If you see a connection to 209.131.119.70:3074 instead, something is wrong and you should check if your proxy settings are correct.
Now start ETQW and try to log in. All traffic to the Demonware authentication and lobby servers should now be encrypted and tunnelled, and should no longer be detected and blocked by your ISP.

"Connection to online services lost" during play means you're losing your connection to the lobby server, yes.
Could you make a Wireshark capture of you logging in, starting to play, and then losing your connection? This might yield some extra clues.
One thing you might want to try is to tunnel the Demonware lobby traffic through Tor as well. To do that, add another "rule" to ProxyCap, using the same settings as the first one, but using IP address 209.131.119.69 instead (so you'll end up with two rules in total). Make sure you click "OK" on the main "Preferences" screen to activate the new settings.
If that doesn't help, it's most likely a router issue on your end, I'm afraid.

hmmm it works but i'm getting kick from servers after playing 10-15 minutes...it comes up with "connection to server lost" any advice?

If you are tunnelling traffic to only the authentication server (at the .70 address), then you don't really need the proxy app or Tor to keep running after you've logged in. They both don't use many resources, however, so you might as well just leave them be.

well I know where you're coming from but it kicks me out after 10-15 minutes of play...I will try to put that second rule when I get home and see how it works after...Tried to use modem and modem crashed as it used to do without that proxy app...

Anyone knows if there's a free alternative to the Proxycap program?
(it's the kind of tool that should come with XP as standard)

That's entirely dependent on what the "still doesn't work" actually means. Did you establish a Tor circuit? Does traffic to DW get tunnelled through Tor? Can you telnet to the server ports of the two DW servers? What error are you getting? When? Doing what?
My crystal ball isn't giving any answers.

My crystal ball isn't giving any answers.
:)
At least yours gave us this workaround - unlike my ISP, which I think doesn't have any kind of balls!
We pay them for a service, and they don't even care to fix it when they decide that some "packets" aren't worth it... pffff
I just SD can somehow change the auth method, probably encrypting the auth and lobby data, so it can go through unfiltered. So we don't have to resort to this kind of workarounds. (even if just as an alternate secondary method, in case the regular one fails)

Like many "service" providers, bandwidth for broadband users is oversold; an ISP could never have all of it's customers using all their available bandwidth at the same time. Thanks to the sheer amount of people downloading games, music, movies, porn from bit torrent....24 hours a day, truly hogging the bandwidth, they have had to institute this kind of shaping to be able to guarantee some connection for all.
Personally I completely disagree with any kind of tiering system for network use as it immediately politicises the Internet which should never be allowed! If an ISP promises 8meg broadband then they should provide 8meg broadband....at any time, day or night. This sort of problem however will be the first in a long line of Internet based issues, all stemming from an overloaded network and no fair means of limiting bandwidth at the point of use.....

I don't want to get off topic but..
Yes, I truly agree with you - believe me!
(and I have hundreds of "complaining" posts and emails to my ISP to prove it)
But besides, even though they shouldn't sell what they can't provide, I can agree that they could prioritize some type of traffic over other - giving higher priority for voice/game data requiring low latency, over that of P2P programs and such - I could agree to that if they clearly stated what they are doing and how.
What I can't accept is deliberate filtering/blocking/tampering with any of the data packets - such as what's happening with ETQW. It's completely unacceptable.
In my case, even VPN connections are being cut out depending on the frequency/bandwidth used. For instance: if I use my VPN to transfer data at full speed, I'm immediately disconnected - if I gradually allow 100Kb, 200Kb... etc... I can reach a steady transfer for a lot longer.
Using my neighbors ISP as "control-subject" via WIFI, I can connect perfectly to ETQW, VPNs, no problem at all - I guess I really need to switch to a new ISP as it seems to be the only true way to fix this issue - at least until they too begin shaping the traffic as well.
I'll be sending them another email today - inquiring how are things going related to the ETQW problem.

also, have you checked the auth and lobby traffic is indeed going through the tor route?

After doing what's on the screenshots, just add:
"One thing you might want to try is to tunnel the Demonware lobby traffic through Tor as well. I first got this error on my main PC, Dual Core AMD WinXP Pro... found this thread.. figured I was SOL. But then I loaded the game on my Gaming Cube Single Core AMD WinXP Home, this machine was able to work just fine. It is plugged in the same router and using the same ISP. I did the telnet commands on both machines and viewed the netstat info.. both showed 209.131.119.70:3074. Disabled AV, turned off FW, restarted router, all the usual.
Ideas, comments?

That happens when you set your Control Port to 9050 instead of the default 9051. You didn't change any of the default setting in Vidalia? Open the Vidalia control panel, go to "Advanced", then change the port number under "Control Port" back to 9051. Save your settings and restart Tor.

Please don't mix up different problems.
One thing is not being able to connect at all, other thing (and the one this post is about) is not being able to login.
As for the case where 2 PC's on the same router, one works the other doesn't. It would be helpful if you send the wireshark logs to RR2.
Are the results repeatable? What is the exact sequence you do?
(you're not trying both at the same time, with one of them being refused because the other is already online?)

Yes, it is repeatable. I've even uninstalled and reinstalled the game on the trouble PC. All I do is start the game and goto login to the profile (never at the sametime), on the trouble PC I've tried creating a new profile and use existing cause I created one on the working PC.
I can try to get some wireshark logs.. just want the raw data?

Yes, that would be helpful. One log from the working PC, and other from the "non-working".
The only thing I can think about that could explain that issue is if router is redirecting all the traffic on the auth ports to a specific IP (the working PC).
Can you check how your settings are on the router regarding UPnP, DMZ, etc?
Also, just to help us debug this issue: if you're using static IPs on your computers, and after re-checking the 2nd PC is working;
can you temporarily replace the computer IPs, so that the non-working PC gets the working one's IP and vice-versa, and then check which one works?
(hope I made myself clear! :)

Ok well Lekdevil you should put this up on your first post. i did some testing this weekend and found that NetLimiter version 1.xx does not like ETQW at all. the program has to be fully unistalled to allow ETQW to actually query the auth server, you cannot just close the app or end the process in the task manager, its affecting the registry somehow. so any of you out there with NetLimiter still on your hdd's then get rid of it and thats problem solved for that part atleast. id love to know what the app is doing to ETQW for it to interfere so much. i love that app since it tells me whats going on but ive waited to long for ETQW so im over it. cheers

it worked the first day and when i got home. The following day after work it didnt work. maybe i closed that app on the monday and then used tor and proxycap. you see i was the only one here were ETQW would throw that connection reset immediately so i figured it was my pc.
Here is what i did. found a spare hdd, installed windows with service pack 2.
then installed gfx drivers. then installed ETQW. saw if i could play. and i could so then went about installing one application then playing etqw all the way until it stopped. pretty laborious but see if its your hardware or isp. now in south africa we have one fixed line monopoly and everything is shaped. unshaped accounts are expensive so i dont know if your problem might be software related. but look at any apps that have any correlation to the internet. in fact net limiter was affecting another game Mage Knight Apocalypse so good luck.

Yeah, I tried that too.
clean install, different PC, and also tried the Linux version as well. No fix.
In my case I guess it's simple:
Connect via my ISP, doesn't work (works sometimes, rarely, like at 02:00AM)
Connect via encrypted tunnel (VPN or tor) works everytime.
Connect via other ISP - works.
That, and considering that I was able to play for a couple of days in the beginning, (and haven't installed anything new on my PC) makes me point to my ISP being the issue.
In any case I hop SD can find a way around this issue, as it seems to be plaguing a lot of people, and that number tends to grow, as more ISPs start using traffic filtering. :(

Well, I fell sorry for SD - as this isn't really their fault. But, paying customers want their games to work - and seeing as this is one of the few games having "issues", I hope they can find an alternative way that works for everyone and doesn't trigger the traffic shaping problem.

Oh, I'm awful sorry, I could have sworn not being able to create and account or login was exactly what this post was about. No, not at all - sorry if it sounded that way. I didn't say: "Don't mix problems!" with the "!" :)
I was just pointing out that there several different problems that may have very similar problems: in your case, not being able to connect at all (not even getting the version info) - while most of us, can get the version info just fine and only fail in the authentication process.
When you can't connect "at all", the process described in this thread won't do you much good.
As for the rest, we're all in the same boat: we all want our games to work out of the box, and not having to worry about "how".
Unfortunately, for this strange problem plaguing many of us, the issue seems to be related to several ISP's - but in a very strange ways (even on the same ISP: for some it works, for some it works sometimes, for other it doesn't)
Just hope this gets sorted out fast. :(

ok after being able to play last night, I couldn't do so today. Seems like I can only play after 11pm like some others?
And you're using the workaround?

Yeah, I'm sorry too, I don't mean to come off as a complete a**hole. I just haven't had a chance to play online since I got it and it's got me all hot and bothered. :(
No worries, I know *exactly* how you're feeling - lost count of the hours I spent playing with the bots, and now I have the game just sitting there, and trying every now and then, to see if anything changed...

Anyone else having this type of issues?
Even without the workaround, I'm experiencing "1st attempts" work, and then stops working! Weirder than ever.

EDIT : in the configuration of proxychains, replaced socks5 by socks4,
I submit you my solution for linux OS, test it to see if it's correct and modify it if needed.
This is the method that Lekdevil found, I adapted it to linux tools.
I didn't test it yet when the "unofficial packet shapping that is not filtering your sent packets" of my ISP is ON.
(Sorry for my english)
We need to install tor, vidalia and proxychains (proxy client, substitute of proxycap).
Sources for tor and vidalia (tor monitoring) can be found at http://www.torproject.org/dist/
Sources for proxychains at http://sourceforge.net/projects/proxychains/
Ubuntu (my distro) has available deb built packages for tor and proxychains, only vidalia needed to be compiled.
By default the installation of tor creates this proxy server :
type : socks5
server : 127.0.0.1 (localhost)
port : 9050
Check that tor is not running before launching vidalia, if not we get this errorOct 19 18:28:25.562 [Warning] Could not bind to 127.0.0.1:9050: Address already in use
After the installation of proxychains, as root edit /etc/proxychains.conf as follows:
dynamic_chain
tcp_read_time_out 15000
tcp_connect_time_out 10000
[ProxyList]
socks4 127.0.0.1 9050
open a console
~$ telnet etqw-180.auth.mmp3.demonware.net 3074
Trying 209.131.119.70...
Connected to etqw-180.auth.mmp3.demonware.net.
Escape character is '^]'.(on azerty keyboard "ctrl" + "alt_gr" + "]")
open a new concole
~$ netstat -t -p
Proto Recv-Q Send-Q Adresse locale Adresse distante Etat PID/Program name
tcp 0 0 localhost:**** 209.131.119.70:3074 ESTABLISHED1922/telnet
connection established without tor the ip of demonware.net appears ..
to establish the telnet connection through tor:
open a new concole
~$ proxychains telnet etqw-180.auth.mmp3.demonware.net 3074
Trying 209.131.119.70...
ProxyChains-2.1 (http://proxychains.sf.net)
dynamic chain:....127.0.0.1:9050....can't connect to..209.131.119.70:3074
dynamic chain:....127.0.0.1:9050....209.131.119.70:3074..O K
Connected to etqw-180.auth.mmp3.demonware.net.
Escape character is '^]'.
It seems we are connected through the proxy ...
...we need to check that, open a new console
~$ netstat -t -p
Proto Recv-Q Send-Q Adresse locale Adresse distante Etat PID/Program name
tcp 0 0 localhost:***** localhost:9050 ESTABLISHED1922/telnet
Ok we are connected through tor to etqw-180.auth.mmp3.demonware.net using telnet:dance: (the ip of demonware.net is replaced by localhost)
So to use tor with ETQW, in a console type proxychains the_path_to_etqw_setup_directory/etqw
for exemple :
~$ proxychains /home/yourname/enemy_territory_quake_wars/etqw
If all goes well the netstat command will give you something like that :
tcp 0 0 127.0.0.1:47684 127.0.0.1:9050 ESTABLISHED1963/etqw.x86
this result only show that you are using tor not that the problem is definetely solved (if I understood well).
et voilà :D

shazam, PaxTibi or anyone else, if you want to translate it in french, ne vous gênez surtout pas si ça fonctionne.

I may install the Suse distro I have, to attempt this resolution. Depends on the following factor tho...
Is it easy to compile the Winblowz x86 version to NiX? Like other iD games? I did it for Quake3... in the past.
Link>>>? sry a bit unrelated but applies in a way.. a bandaid maybe for those who want to continue on... until fixed.
Edit:
I have successfully connected to demonware server through the previous methods many times ...... however ETQW refuses to allow for anything more than I previously mentioned.

Works for me on Ubuntu Gutsy! Thank you!
I made a deb of Vidalia (a GUI to start/stop Tor) with checkinstall that you can find here: http://telex.club.fr/misc/vidalia_0.0.14-1_i386.deb
You need to install the QT4 librairies (the package doesn't install the dependencies).

And you're using the workaround?
Yes, but it seems like that sometimes I have to wait like a minute (longer) to get logged in. So my last post was wrong: I can play every time with the workaround but sometimes it takes longer to log in or to get the full server list (i.e waiting for the list with all the 2000 players) Thansk again for the fix. *** Fix ***
I have solved this issue at least for me, for the time being... I am currently logged in as my user and it seems ok.
This is how I resolved this issue... I have no idea how long this will last but its working at the moment.
1. Uninstalled ETQW
2. Removed Remaining Config Files and everything related to ETQW.
3. Restart
4. Installed ETQW 1.0 refused 1.1 patch at initial install time.
5. Logged into ETQW ( Successfully )
6. Downloaded Patch
7. Installed 1.1 Patch
8. Delete My Profile Folder that the Game Creates................
10. Created Rules in Windows Firewall for Demonware TCP Port 3074 General Access
11. Created Rules in Windows Firewall for Demonware UDP Port 3074 General Access
12. Before Running the Game I created an Autoexec.cfg file and placed it in both the Base Folder in your Enemy Territory main install folder, and the iDsoftware folder it creates in ( MyDocuments\id Software\Enemy Territory - QUAKE Wars\base )
13. In this Autoexec.cfg file I placed the following lines.
seta net_socksEnabled "1"
seta net_socksPassword ""
seta net_socksUsername ""
seta net_httpProxy ""
seta net_updateAutoExecute "0"
seta net_updateAutoDownload "0"
seta net_socksPort ""
seta com_purgeAll "1"
seta net_socksServer "localhost"
14. Started ETQW and Logged in fully Updated and In............
If this solution works for you please let me know.. or if it fails.. but for now Im back and playing.

This method appears sound. As a bandaid ..
I hope they fix this in the patch.. I will post if method succeeds over 1 day and then 1 week.

net_socksEnabled
net_socksPassword
net_socksUsername
net_socksPort
net_socksServer
all these commands return "unknown command" by the linux etqw client
can somebody confirm that they are in the windows client?

sry the example is for Windows I aplogise for not saying that...
I left the fields blank as some had info in them.... this way I disabled a specific reference to a specific port. Maybe remove those lines from the autoexec.. and your etconfig.
tweaking may be required... I guess for others but Im still fixed...
Good Luck..
Im still logged in and able to play... :)

The bug previously decribed here no longer applies, its was somehting wrong with my cfg.
All display elements work fine after this fix.
After redoing the above steps... I have been able to login again and play without errors.

stuff
None of that changes the way ETQW communicates with the Demonware servers. If doing all that fixed your issue, then you were most likely experiencing something else completely than what this thread is about -- client configuration errors being the most probable cause.

Well, if anyone can follow his instructions to verify if indeed does make any difference, that would be helpful. I'm away from home during the weekend, can't test it myself.
But I agree that the issue, so far, "blames" the ISP.
However, I've been trying during during the day, and sometimes it works, most time it doesn't. Sometime it just works on 1st try and then stops working for God knows how long... while connecting via VPN works every single time. So... I'm still waiting for answer from my ISP.

k people ... whatever I got these errors... and regular reinstall didnt work .. same as u guys.
****Connection Reset*****Connection Failed*****Play Online Blacket Out*****Persistent Stats Blacked Out*****Failure To Log In****
This method of reinstallation fixed those errors for me.. so elect to try it or not.. I fought with this issue for almost a full day... Im aware of what it is.
Im back and playing... its not hard to reinstall the game but do it in a specific process..... with 2 simple text files... added to your base folders. Not like u dont have the time :P If it doesnt work for everyone Im sorry, however it has worked for me.
Since its worked and no other attempts I made did .. I put up the process I followed.. and 2nd attempt to repeat procedure had same results.
To verify what I did had an impact I did a regular reinstall as well to come to a 1.1 version game blacked out and fighting the login at every turn.
Solution worked for me I could have kept it to myself.
(This is only directed at those who cant attempt such simple instructions.)
PS: While u deny it works... Illl be playing 24hrs+ now... and still going strong each attempt to log in.
PSS: To find the My Profile folder I refer 2.... Try doing a file search for a folder with your screen name on it LOL

I'm not saying that your method doesn't yield any positive results; it's just that it contains so many extraneous steps that it's hard to determine what the core of the problem was and what fixed it.
For example: the cvar settings you describe, are they all necessary? How did you determine which cvars to include in that list? What were their values when you couldn't log in, and which changes were needed to make the login work? Also, you say that you put your autoexec.cfg in two separate directories. Is that really necessary for it to work, or is just one directory enough? Do you need the autoexec.cfg file at all? Those Windows firewall settings: does your login still work without those settings applied? Finally, did you capture your network traffic before and after your change? What changes did you see?
if you can setup socks in the game, then it'd be fairly easy to fix if one can setup a dynamic ssh tunnel to a computer, at least in universities it would be.

Just to clarify:
Router problems usually happen AFTER you have created an account and logged in, when you try to get the server list. Ether you will see less players/servers than expected, or your connection will drop.
ISP filtering and AV/personal firewall problems often prevent you from logging in or creating an account at all.
There are multiple different problems affecting people. If you have a problem like this, the first step is to try to figure out which one it is.
Tried this work around twice and still it doesnt log on. Still get connection reset error - cant even create an account. Thought the 1.2 update would help but unbeliebably it didnt.
I use BT as my ISP and a Lynsys wireless adsl gateway, please can someone help. Is there 'hidden' software in my router blocking connection, why do all other online games work...I have even tried disabling the firewall on the router and windows.

To rule out that is has nothing to do with the router, try connecting your modem directly to your PC, and see if it makes any difference.

If you get connection reset while trying to log on or create an account, it probably isn't a router problem. Or at least it isn't the usual router problem.
