View Full Version : 1.2 - ATI Cards and Crashing to Desktop
If you have an ATI card and are crashing to the desktop when you try to join a server or load a map, please do the following:
Disable Triple Buffering in the ATI Control panel.
This should solve the crash problem and allow you to play.
Update: This issue will be fixed by ATI in an upcoming driver release.

Good to hear, being an ATI user and all. I've been having some problems with massive FPS loss whenever I mess with video settings, but if I leave things alone, it's playable. Anyway...I'm just happy this is being looked into.
Thanks, SD! :D

I renamed my .exe, this fixed my problem with not being able to get into the game but caused a new problem where it will freeze my computer 5-10mins into it. The OP has the solution, unfortunatley I cant use any catalyst drivers past 7.7 and everything before 7.7 has opengl error's.
Patch 1.2 has officially killed my game
No offense to anybody but I have never encountered such a game breaking patch in my life.

With either Triple Buffering disable or enable, still crashes to desktop when joining a server...so not the fix for my crash. Going to update to the latest ATi Drivers.
Updated to ATi 7.10 ccc and disabled triple buffering and can now play.

I've tried every fix on these forums.
None work.
I've re-installed and am now playing BOT's out of the box (1.0).
I suggest you all do the same untill someone somewhere realises they have messed up everyone's previously working game. 1.0 and 1.1 both work fine.
SD this is not good enough, patches that break the game and then need patches to fix the patches
They will soon fix it when all the servers are suddenly empty.
Sorry for the rant but it's now 04:25am and I have been installing/reinstalling/fixing/tweaking/changing drivers since about 6pm last night NOTHING works.
Fix it or scrap the stupid patch, roll back all the servers to 1.1 and let us play the game we where all happy playing a couple of days ago.

Because NV/ATI enable driver optimisations for specific games by scanning the executable name. You can often catch them cheating in this way like in the quake/quack incident.

Has anyone with the problem just renamed the .exe and (still) enabled AI and tripple buffering?
This should be the best hot fix solution as it don't matters what the .exe is named, but matters more to have nice gfx.

i have posted my observations in another thread...so i won't go into detail...
the crash reason seems to be the combination of cat ai and triple buffering...
if only one of those is disabled the game works...with the difference, that with cat ai on and triple buffer off it takes ages to load up and when a map is finally loaded it's still caching stuff in the background which makes the game and limbo totally unresponsive, but when caching is done, everything works ok...the other way around (cat ai off, TB on) it works perfectly for me...even better than before...
renaming the exe causes alot of warnings in the logfile, but is also working with either triple buffering and cat ai on...
at least this applies to me....
edit:
my friend has a radeon 9800pro and for him only renaming the exe helps...
the cat ai and TB switching doesn't help...
so it seems to be a problem with x1000 cards (and greater maybe)...i've got an x1950pro myself...

I have gone through all of the above ideas and noted that one thing wasn't mentioned: I can play single player just fine. So what's the difference between playing online and playing single-player have to do with ATI Cards????

Hello All I have a Gecube X1300 512 card. The At first I could play the game fine with the Catalyst 7.7 Driver. With the 1.2 patch all drivers prior to 7.9 would not join a game at all. They would load all the way and crash as soon as it was time to join. Catalyst 7.9 and 7.10 would allow me to join a game, but the graphics had lines and streaks the whole way across the screen anywhere there was text.
((((((((((I just turned of Catalyst A.I. and Turned on Triple Buffering with the 7.10 Catalyst Drivers and viola I was again playing with no problems.)))))))))

Just a follow-up which doesn't add much 'cohesion' to the problem, but just another example.
I was having the same problem and turning off triple buffer or catalyst AI made no difference. I was using the latest OMEGA drivers which are based off the 7.10s.
So I did a clean uninstall. Removed everything driver related, ATI tools, etc. Then downloaded the latest Catalyst Drivers from ATI (I hate CCC, but I did it anyways). For some reason, it resolved my problem. When I installed the new package from ATI/AMD - it by default had triple buffering and the catalyst AI disabled.
The performance still isn't as "smooth" as it was pre 1.2 - but my FPS are not down that drastically.. maybe on average 5-7 fps.
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600
2 Gigs of RAM
ATI X1900XT 512MB
I get a high FPS of around 60 - 70, and lows in really congested action of maybe 30 - 32.

My advice to those of you not getting QWET to work after turning off Catalyst A.I. is to uninstall everything ATi related, and I do mean everything wipe it clean and start from scratch. Once you have a clean slate install the 7.10 Drivers. Once these drivers and the new control panel are installed open the control panel and turn off Catalyst A.I. Turn off anything that has anything to do with Anti Aliasing. Anti Aliasing fixes are what is causing ATi Card users to crash.

The game and patches are tested on Nvidia Systems, and they work fine on those systems it is an ATi related issue more than Splash Damages Bad. Many of us spent many many hours trying to figure out what drivers to use, and what settings would work. Many of us found a fix, and many of us posted the fixes we found here. Yes it is frustrating, but before you get all worked up and give yourself an aneurysm make sure you have removed everything ATi before trying to repatch to 7.10

I'm at a loss, it keeps crashing
I was using CCC 6.4(ish) triple buffering was already off and I turned off the catalyst AI as well.
That didn't work.
I then upgraded to Radeon omega drivers V3.8.421, of which I think I disabled triple buffering, by disabling 'Force 3D profiles' but I found it's settings confuzing so I'm not sure if there was a simple tripple buffering setting in it.
I still crashed.
I then deinstalled Omega and upgraded to 7.10 disabled triple buffering and catalyst AI and set all Anti-analising to 'let the application decide'
I am still crashing!!!
I cannot rename the .exe to etqw_test.exe because I am using the steam version.
Nor can I use anything lower than the latest patch available on steam because that too is automatic.

Nope no single player, no lan, and no online.
Noticeable is though that online crashes immediately upon joining the server, and single player first does take the time to load everything.
What 3D do online servers show before you have even started loading the map?
Also, I do think there should be a patch(hopefully soon) because the point of it working when renamed; means Splash has the code for a workaround or fix already, they just have it turned off in the (current) final version.

Can it be something related to an old beta installation? I have X800GTO, had beta2 still installed and couldn't connect to any Internet servers.
I upgraded to latest version of the ATI software, went to 3C - triple buffering was already disabled, disabled AI. No help.
Then I renamed the binary and uninstalled beta2. Worked after that, and still worked when I renamed the binary back to original name.

this is not SD's fault...at least not the problems with the ATI cards...
it's purely ATI's fault, cause they cheat in their drivers, and renaming the file makes the driver not recognize the game and use standard values...

I don't know if it was already mentioned, but just try joining the server in "window mode" and after connecting just switch back to fullscreen. (ALT+Enter)

I wasnt able to play on or offline - but renaming the exe fixed it.
I noticed that first time it crashed (SP) there was an error saying that it was trying to open an 2nd instance of the game, and there was an odd splitscreen - so renaming probably killed one of those instances. (prevented it from starting)

now I bought the game (via steam, so no exe-renaming here) and it doesn't work. how can that be?
installed 7.10, turning off both Cat. AI AND Triple Buffering: I could connect to the server, and even play 1 map and 5 minutes on another, but then the game froze (not crashing to desktop).

That and the impossibility to downgrade to lower versions seem now to be the main disadvantages of using Steam.

first you must open your console by pressing alt+ctrl+~. once you got it open, type in com_usefastvidrestart 1, hit enter and you're all set. now to minimize you first hit alt+enter to bring the game into windowed mode. then you can go ahead and alt+tab out onto your desktop.
THX [ak]nuts
ETQW Steam version
Full screen: off (windows tries to do something on alt+enter, but it doesn't succeed in switching between fullscreen, so nothing happens)
Resolution: 4/5 of my desktop, setting it higher doesn't have any effect
Graphics: lowest (with 1024-768 resolution I can't go higher :( )
Outside ETQW
ATI 9800 XT with CCC 7.10
ATI AI: off
Triple buffering: on
I used the console a few times to run com_usefastvidrestart 1, thinking that you need to run the command whenever you start the game.
Weather the change is permanent, or if I just don't need to do that for QW to work; I no longer enter it and it still works.
But it still crashes when I turn on full screen.
And I'm straight into the next problem:
I get disconnected on the entering second map in a punk buster server, and after a random number of games on a non punk buster server.
This is probably connected to the fact that it fails to track any persistent stats what so ever, end I did play a few single matches on ranked campaign servers.
and for the guys who got it working and have a multicore processor try enabling the threaded renderer...it upped my fps a nice bit...I have a dual core, is that a function on the CCC? if so where is it. the FPS is reasonable, but more might allow me to pull up the graphics a little.

Well well, changing the exe to etqw_test.exe worked for me.
Does this mean there is something up with the latest ATI drivers?
Slim
yes...this is due to "optimizing" drivers for different game i guess...
I have a dual core, is that a function on the CCC? if so where is it. the FPS is reasonable, but more might allow me to pull up the graphics a little.
either type r_useThreadedRenderer "2" in the console before (!) entering a game or put it into your autoexec.cfg...

Just disable "optimisations"
I have now fixed all my issues by doing the following for my 1950pro AGP:
in catalyst control panel enable triple buffering
in catalyst control panel disable Catalyst AI
in catalyst control panel set all other options to application controlled
in autoexec set imape_picmip 2
I now have full glorious graphics again and my FPS is back upto a constant smooth 30
and I no longer have a long wait loading (the delay after spawn entities = 100% caused by CCC "optimising" the loaded textures before letting the map play)
Thank Strogg fro that!!!
for me disabling triple buffering caused sub 30 FPS all the time!
Hope this helps someone!

Yes, rename the etqw.exe, then run it by double clicking on it, don't use the shortcuts or autorun from the DVD.

Now I know that "optimizations" is not a setting in CCC, whut do you mean by it?

Had problems on my Macbook Pro ATI X1600, renamed the .exe and it works now.
Very very odd =(
Same, had weird problems with my ATI X1600 mobility on my laptop. (Couldn't see bullet tracers when zoomed or in a vehicle & also strange screen freezing while looking towards the edge of the map but the minimap still worked).
Then updated my video drivers and the game kept crashing when loading maps.
Tried a number of different video drivers, still kept crashing.
Renamed the exe runs fine now!

Lol the only games that dont crash my ATI card are QW & W:ET, pretty handy as these are the only 2 i give a crap about. Serioulsy though my ATI card has been nothing but hassle. I tried playing Oblivion & it crashed the graphics card so badly i had to reinstall windows (off topic i know, sorry).

The renaming myth is worthless.... It's still the same executable file, nothing chnaged in the code, it still bugs with Catalyst.
Just disable Catalyst A.I. AND Triple Buffering and everything is fine.
Again, renaming is useless.

That is not true, rename the file name means that the Catalyst driver does not recognise the program and then try and optimize the setting to run it.
I have a 1950 Pro and using the original filename and 1.2 patch the program crashes after loading a map, changing the name of the exe file allows me to run the program with Catalyst A.I. and Triple Buffering ON.
So this seems to indicate a problem within the driver, not the program.
It’s not a myth, so don’t dismiss something just because you don’t experience the problem.

This is NOT TRUE. Both ATI and nvidia drivers detect the executable by name, and do various "special" things based on that. In general, these things are to make the game run better. This has been going on for a long time, and is most definitely not a myth.
That said, if you can run the game without renaming (by disabling cat AI and triple buffering) that is the more desirable solution, because then you will still get the advantage of whatever optimizations/bug fixes ATI does specifically for etqw.

aren't the cat ai functions those optimizations, which get as disabled as when you rename the exe? i mean, that would explain why it's working both ways...
i guess the warnings in the logs result from something PB related...
but i don't really know...
anyways, having cat ai disabled allows me to reenable triple buffering without any problems...but i've discovered that this depends on chiptype...

I have a 9500 pro. Mine kept crashing recently, the screen would freeze when I disabled VPU recovery mode. I updated to the latest drivers dated Oct. 2007 and they seem to work better. Still have triple buffering disabled though. I would not disable the cat AI altogether though.

disable it, and the loading times very likely will be shortened...
when it's disabled you can even turn triple buffering on again, which could give you a small performance boost...
and if you hav a dual core cpu, enable threaded rendering to get anoter one...

Disabling the Catalyst AI fixed the crashing problems for me but ever since the 1.2 patch was implemented I've noticed that my FPS has taken a hit in some areas like the Slipgate Room in Area 22.
I think it has to do with the Catalyst AI but I'm really not sure, overall my FPS seems to have gone down in all maps. It used to run great before when I had Catalyst AI enabled during 1.0 and 1.1.

leave cat ai disabled and enable triple buffer in your driver...
then type seta r_useThreadedRenderer 2 in the game console before loading a map or just create an autoexec.cfg and put it in there...might get you some more fps...

hello, please does anyone have any suggestions to make my game run right?
running out of the box after un and re installing several times :(
the game works fine, except with acually playing it :( ! when i play any map, LAN, or against the computer, the loading process stops at
"loading entities 100%" then i get the "ETQW is not responding" messege. plus when i go to Task Manager, the Mem. usage for ETQW is 999,000 K!
i have tryed everything including disabling Triple Buffering and catylyst AI, the combination of the two, turning the resolution to 480 x 640, lowest possible graphics and particles, shaders,EVERYTHING!
nothing seems to work. i do not believe i should change the .exe name and i dont want to mess things up. please, if anything would help i would really, really appreciate it.
i am running Vista Premium (i have heard nothing is good with vista yet), ATI Radeon 1300X Pro 256MB video card, 2.3 Ghz AMD dual core processor and 2Gigabytes of RAM.
maybe another program is conflicting with with ETQW, i dont know.
also should i exit the AGEIA PhysX processor properties? the version is 2.3.1
Edit:
I have found the golden ticket!
DISABLE Cat AI and ENABLE triple buffering. i hope every ATI user trys this before messing with their .exe! oh am i greatful that 50 bucks does not go down the drain!
this game is really beautiful if you set the graphics to high. triple buffering does nothing to crash my comp. it HELPS the frame rate

The optimal resolution is to use both the AI and have EVERYTHING enabled. Thanks to the ATI 7.10 drivers I have NO issues anymore. Once you disable performance enhancements, your gameplay will suffer. And I tell you another thing, I'll take this ATI 9500 Pro over any like model nVidia! I have the 5400 and 5200 nVidia vid cards and they suck massively. I'm lucky to get 15 FPS with those, but I get a good 50-60 FPS with the ATI.
gorg_graggel
11-13-2007, 05:32 AM
what do you mean by "everything"?
maybe thats a resolution for those other guys with 9x00 series cards, who had to rename until now...
anyways, a bit offtopic, but the 9500 pro doesn't compare to the 5200/5400, which were low cost at it's time, more to the 5700, which was middle class then...

If you have an ATI card and are crashing to the desktop when you try to join a server or load a map, please do the following:
Disable Triple Buffering in the ATI Control panel.
This should solve the crash problem and allow you to play.
Update: This issue will be fixed by ATI in an upcoming driver release.
Doesn´t need to disable Triple Buffering as it improves peformance with vertical sync ON. Just disable Catalyst AI and enable those above and the crashes is gone :)

I have both off and can now play. sometimes the game hangs after 2-3 maps, but right now I was able to play 5 or 6 or so - without changing any setting in the meantime (i.e. both off).
playing the demo was more fun, because it actually worked without problems.

I think every ATI user has to determine his own unique configuration settings that are required to get the game to play as it did prior to the patch. For me, a combination of ATI settings, name change and running in a windowed screen (versus full screen) did the trick. I suggest that reading all 4 pages of this thread, trying a little bit from here and there and you should find success. There wasn't a single solution that worked for me so if you don't want to wait for a new patch you are going to have to take a few minutes and just play with all the settings.

OK, then why were they not faulty under 1.1? If there was ATi update at the same time 1.2 was released, then fair enough.
The main point is, whatever they changed in 1.2 broke the game - for a LOT of people. Unless ATi released a simultaneous update, they've been working with the same drivers all along. If they're going to make an optimization change, they should have waited until ATi updated whatever is faulty on their end. Just sayin'.
I'm glad this site is here, but I shouldn't have had to search for a workaround to a new & improved point release.

Welcome to the real world. It rarely cares what you think you should or shouldn't have to do.
Not every issue gets caught in testing, and this one (regardless of who's fault it is) slipped through. If SD rolled back the patch every time there was a compatibility problem, there would never be a new patch, because in the PC world, there are ALWAYS compatibility problems. Sure you are upset that the patch "broke" your game, but all the people for whom the patch made the game work would be equally upset if they suddenly couldn't use it. The fact is there are several usable workarounds, and ATI acknowledged it was their problem. In the face of that, it would be silly to roll back the patch.

Well, then the real world won't get my $60 the next it decides to roll a game out. So.. it should care. ;)
In all honesty, I'm not that mad, just voicing some concern. I love the game. The goofy workaround works fine. But seriously, minor things slipping by? Sure, I get that. This was a little too big to write off as "oops we let this one by", especially after the amount of time this title was pushed back. How many ETQW players use ATi cards? Maybe not the majority, but a hell of a lot.

I have a near to 100% crashing probability on the Pacific map Sewer (Japan), when moving near the Strogg starting Base's energy shields (if that's the correct name for these orange thingies that protect the bases).
I don't know whether that is connected to the 7.11 catalyst or if that was there before. so sorry for crossposting.
Catalyst VPU recover can recover once, but if I move near the shields again, I'm likely to crash again, with no recover the second time. I have to reboot.
I'm using steam, which replaced the demo with the full game when I purchased it - I was able to properly play the demo though.

Anyway, the game loads just fine but when I try to get it to play (via autorun) it starts to load and after about 20 seconds a get an open GL not supported error. It never even asks me for the CD key that's how soon it crashes
Specs:
Core 2 Duo 2.33 GHz
Vista 32 bit
2 gig ram
ATI mobility X1900 256 mb
8.332.0.0 driver
Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance.

your graphics drivers seem to be a little bit old...
but on ati.com you won't get drivers for your card, as it only goes up to 1800 series for mobility versions...and for vista there seems to be no mobility support at all...
you'll need to check if your notebook manufacturer offers newer drivers on his homepage...then you'll need to uninstall the old ones, reboot your computer and then install the newer ones...

well, installing xp would be a solution...
i googled a bit on this and it turned out that most notebook manufacturers don't have updated vista drivers for newer cards...if they are working at all you get very low performance...

Has this ever happened to a nvidia based card? I'm using a 8800GT and I'm crashing to desktop once the games load, right before character selection, I crash with this [The instruction at "0x7c901139" referenced memory at "0x0000003c". The memory could not be "written". Click on OK to terminate the program]

What do mean with "disable the drivers"?
Get new ones? Get what? If you mean graphics drivers, that depends on what graphics card you have.

You may attach a dxdiag. To do so click on start->run->dxdiag->click on save all information (lower right), this creates a .txt file which you can attach to a post.
Btw. you of course also can look into the device manager...:o

For me changing the exe file name to etqw_test.exe and closing ATI Catalyst Control Center worked. =D

I had an X700 that worked great on this system. I had to turn things down to 800x600 but it ran great. I also run it on my laptop with an X600 with no problems.
When 1.2 came out I had to rename the exe to etqw_test.exe and it worked.
I saw a real good deal on an ATI 2400HD Pro so I picked it up thinking it should be much better than my X700.
It doesn't work. I removed ALL ATI Drivers using the ATI utility and driver sweep etc.. and installed The CCC 7.12 !!
It crashes every time.
YES I have renamed the exe
YES I have turned off the AI
YES I have turned off triple buffering and tried it ON as well.
It seems whenever I'm near the force fields it seems to crash or about 3 mins into it.
This game is now officially FARKED for me. Other games seem to work well with no problems at all.
Someone please help!! Will this be fixed with 1.4???
