"What we got here is a failure to communicate." -- The Captain, the prison warden from Cool Hand Luke

This famous line from Cool Hand Luke sums up my feeling about playing Quake Enemy Territories online. I have bound my VOiP chat button on my 5th mouse button. Some are surprised that I use a mouse button for VOiP, but I think it is VERY important to communicate on this game. I'm surprised that others do not do this and I am downright disappointed that I get on servers with 10+ and hear crickets instead of chatter.

Your thoughts?

VoiP is cool in my opinion. It's the easier way to say sorry, (e.g) if someone jumps into my grenades. There are also some funny guys around there :D (It's time to blow the f*cking hammer down, muahaha!)

I also think not everyone has a headset, i know people only playing with a surround system, so they can't say anything. But well, i don't think VoiP is bad.

I've never honestly used VOIP. My clan has Ventrilo, so we are on that. There are times that I wished on was on voip to better coordinate, but frankly I don't want to hear alot of what I know I'm going to hear - immaturity, swearing, etc........

Tell me why anyone would use Ventrilo when you have an integrated VOiP now.

Well, for one, my clan is mulltigaming. Other people in clan will come in and listen, even while involved in other games.

It existed before voip - why not? As a Christian gaming clan, it's a whole lot cleaner in terms of respect and langauge. The focus is really about having fun, the game comes second, although as time goes by, we'll have some very good players who work as a team.

I use the VoiP because having TS up or Vent up takes bandwidth imo. Besides, i dont know how to use the preprogramed sayings at all and im stupid like that. Besides yes its fun to say "Hammering <insert location> get your ass out!" Or "ow!" when i get naded or smushed by a deployable. Its funny to hear others laugh at me too because of that. At least they see the humor in it, specially when i see something like a violator "Ouch I got violated" which is a common saying. Damn violator beam sounds and reminds me of a m5 twister. "Hurricane inbound!"

I just joined the forum only to address this point because I do exactly feel the same. I was really excited about VOIP and have been playing about 6 hours since patch 1.2. In those 6 hours I recieved two voice messages, one of them in russian which I didn't understand. So why has everabody been whining about this issue before the patch if nobody is interested in using it? Maybe all the VOIP-kiddies have already turned towards other games (player numbers seem to be declining). I'm a bit disappointied. Most of the time when I gave a warning over VOIP my teammates would even respond with the "SSSH!" chat message. Btw yes, I do know etiquette rules.

I'd like to ask people to switch to the ingame VOIP-system instead of using a 3rd party one, if only 3-5 out of 24 on a server are using it. My two cents.

I use VOIP all the times. I noticed when i am on servers with noobs, that all I hear are crickets, but even then, I still use the VOIP to help tell them where to go and where people are.

But when it comes down to it. It is sometimes a pain in the butt when people don't use it. Thats why I like joining on the few servers I know where alot of experienced players that use VOIP are going to be.

As for using Vent or any other external application durring game play. I think its pointless now since the game has VOIP. But evern with my clan, during game play I really don't want to talk to them about nothing. Usually I am to busy playing the game. Hrm. everyone has there own reasons.

I've noticed its very useful. the top dark matter cannon oppressor, Haggus uses it a lot. He goes 'Dark matter cannon behind the MCP, clear the area' and gets few TKs as a result.

I'm gonna get a mic. can't stand using headphones so i'll get a desktop one.

I've been known for my excessive swearing though (I go 'f***, sh!t at least 10 times per map and a couple of 'OWNED!, AHAHAHAHH' whenever I do a couple of multikills with arty or strike or when someone gets killed by my grenade after killing me)

hell, i've been told to bind my swear words to a key since i use them so often lol.....

A lot of people dont have MICS or they dont realise it was added in the patch and that you haveto go to options and turn it on.

You can mute annyoing players. You also can adjust it so you have only VOIP in a fireteam, for example.

@Fatfool
I still donīt see the point of using a dark matter cannon againts the MCP/Infantry, and when there are AVTs its pure foolishness...
For area - spamming the rail howitzer is better, for attacking the MCP the plasma mortar is better, plus you can direct its other shots manually on other spots and it has a shorter recharge time than the dark matter cannon.

Its turned on by default isn't it?

They all seem to have heard me when I yell "take out the APT", "go in as a team, not one by one", "4 covert ops and no radar, come on, how hard can it be", my wishes always get fulfilled, but I rarely got talked back.

The other day, finally, I got some response, there were like 3 of us on VOIP, and we the "newbie" team kicked the hell out of the more experienced guys, just because we were acting like a well coordinated unit. Was a great experience.

There really need to be more people using this.
Any advice on (european) servers were people actually do this?

I have heard people in each game I played yesterday, I don't have a mic yet so I can't respond, but it did help hearing the warnings

i use it alot now and i find it helpful that other people are using it too.. i find it has improved team play alot.

i find that it's alot easier to spot enemies when someone is actually telling you "guy up on the catwalk" and that kind of thing, rather than using the game default quickchats like "enemy infantry spotted" which doesn't tell me much aside from that they're at the base or whatever.

yes i like voip alot..

people swearing and stuff doesn't bother me, it's a mature game, leave it be i say. as for the people spamming the game with useless chatter, i just ignore them - unless they're screaming into the mic.. then they get muted, i like my hearing :D

I use VOIP all the time, and i've even gotten typed responses.
I do recall one server where 3 of us were frequently using VOIP and even started a fireteam to work together.

There was one time, though, I was using VOIP to beg for help, then I suddently realized when I looked at the scores that I was the only human on my team.....oops.

Typically when using VOIP, I'll keep the comms clear unless I'm saying something important hehe. So typically just the Sorry, the rallying calls, the "morters inbound to position", and the "defending the charge with sniping."

On average I would say 4 or 5 people are using VOIP Atleast and most people are listening but dont have a mic or dont ever say a word unless directly adressed on our pub server @ migamer.net

Its been a great experience honestly and I am glad people arent commonly spamming with useless chatter like I expected, its for the most part only usefull information that is broadcasted, however, I agree, more people do need to get a mic or simply use the voip. If you notice people are being shy you can ask people to do things in question form and provide a lot of usefull comms to your team and usually then everyone will start participating who has a mic.

I just started using it myself. I wooted a headset just for this game. I have yet to hear anything remotely related to immaturity or swearing on the in-game VOIP and I play on a lot of servers. And like the OP it is bound to my mouse button. I agree its that important. The difference between a team that has even 2 or 3 guys on VOIP vs the ones that don't almost always get raped. There's just no substitute when everyone on your team can hear you warn about mines or the sniper on the hill or the 5 guys standing around your dead body. ;)

Honestly I think its a little intimidating at first if you've never used it before and thats why you don't see so many people using it. Its easier to be an anonymous player than have to actually *gasp* talk to people. I can actually relate to that because I'm definitely an introvert. ;)

Yesterday, finally, I had the first great VOIP-experience and it improved the game so much I really wished everybody was using it. This was on an US-server, so either, you US-guys are technologically much more advanced with all those fancy headsets, or, the language barrier is an issue on European servers. You just can't expect anybody on a german server to understand and speak german so theoretically, it would be best if everybody spoke english, which some people are probably too shy for. Actually, I dont' care about grammar as long as people are getting across their point - so grab your mics!!

I actually think its cool when I play with people from across the ocean. All the different accents make it really feel like a Global Defense Force. :)

VoIP is the win and that is all there is to it! Get a goddamn microphone/headset people! Besides, people say some really funny stuff ingame!

I utilize VoIP whenever I play, as I can:
1) Apologize to anyone I accidentally TK with mines/vehicles/arty/airstrikes/etc
2) Coordinate my team: "Now drive off the ledge, not onto the road... No not that ledge" *fires at correct ledge with chaingun* "the one I fired at...good."
3) Warn them about incoming enemies/vehicles/arty/violators/etc. "Incoming Tormentor, watch the skies!"
4) When I'm deploying a deployable. "Ok, I'm deploying an Arty. Interceptor"
5) When I need them to deploy a turret, radar, arty.
