Ok so here is my dilemma. I really would like to start learning how to create 3d renders and other moding things so when Quake Wars comes out i would be able to make some cool stuff and make a couple of my own maps. So where do i begin? What programs out there should I look into (Maya)? And what tutorials are out there to help with this. Any help would be fantastic. Thanks alot!

Creative ideas are a good start
Excellent time management and team management skills help lots
Maya or 3DSMax (maybe even AutoCAD? not sure) for modeling.
Photoshop or equivalent for textures.

try using a free program before you drop money on something you may not like/be good at.

Maj. Damage gave a nice overview of different tools needed for different fields of modding, which is a very broad term.
Is there anything in there of which you have a basic understanding and/or interest?
Also, if you have ideas, what do you plan to do?

Well im pretty darn good in photoshop, so doing textures and what not shouldnt be a problem. Its mostly modeling is what i want to learn how to do. Ive always wanted to learn how and id like to implement the 3d modeling into other area's not just gaming

well you can start... right now!! learning modelling is a long process (1 year here, and i still gotta a lot to learn hehe), you need motivation.
So get your hands on some 3d app, some tutorials, and let's go!

Don't forget GMAX, if you cannot afford the wonderful 3DStudioMax and Maya which they have a Learning edition PLE I believe for FREE with certain restrictions of course but it should give you a good start.
Sounds like you're more into mapmaking than modding. I would start here: http://www.iddevnet.com/quake4/
If you have Doom3/quake4/prey then you can start by making maps for those, and I read somewhere that you should be able to open the .map files with the quakewars mapmaker. There will be differences, but you can at least get started practicing/learning.

autoCAD? lol don't be silly.
as for a free mod tool, don't get blender, get XSI Mod Tool, it's free and what Valve used to make Half Life 2, and imo it's just as good as 3Ds Max, and i might actually move to it, it's a very good tool and again, free...blender is a load of crap. (sorry blender fanboi's)

For Mapping:
if you have any idsoftware engine game, you could get the gtk radiant:
http://www.qeradiant.com/
it is pretty easy to work with it. you better dont try the build in editors of doom3/quake4/prey, because they are simply ugly to handle and very buggy.
If you want to create textures, try this tool, its free:
http://www.mapzoneeditor.com/index.php
for Modeling, as said Blender is a good choice.
I can't say the same for the Gimp, maybe only because I'm too used to photoshop, but the gimp is very hard to work with for me.
If you dont know anything about programming yet, then you should really think about it, because it takes time to learn it.
you might though want to look into gui scripting of a doom3 engine game, that might be easy enough to learn in a short time frame (dont use the buildin editor, use a simple texteditor).

If you say it's crap, please say why. (I'm no Blender, but a Lightwave user BTW)
If it is the fact that the interface is completely different from any other app, you're right. But that is not necessarily a bad thing for a beginner, seeing how he needs to learn some interface anyway.

btw forgot to mention:
this just another modding topic, when do we get a modding forum ?
(sorry for offtopic, this not a question you should answer, it's just a complain, hoping a moderator notices it :p)

Listen to me modeling is one of hardest things you can try to learn in computer rendered art so yo have a alot of months ahead of you of tutorials i suggest going to eyebalistic.com they have the best bigginner tuts for 3d max (my fav)

Why are there just a few people that use Lightwave? I think its the best! Lightwave just works faster.

If you want to map, I highly recommend GTKRadiant. Start learning the interface as it is similar to what the official editor will be like. You can even start working on assets and import them in once the dev tools are released.

The best thing you could do if you want to learn to mod is to join a current team...but be very honest with the team your joining that you are just learning. MOST teams will take you on if your eager and willing to learn, that would be the best thing to do other than just sludging threw 100's of modeling/texturing/coding tutorials.
Its simple 3dmax PWNZERSLet me guess.. warez'd copy of the app?
It's kind of funny reading all these uninformed 3d nob (sorry for the wording mods) waving comments about what's best when no one even bothers to stop to ask a basic "Oh I wonder if I can export out to the right format for 'X' game" question (and before you reply with some lame smart arse remark, yes I know Max export to the right format).

way back I did some levels for Doom and I remember it taking a very long time before having something that's even remotely decent.
Later I tried duke3d, but I never got build to work properly :) darn thing always crashing on me.

I had great fun with build and the editor supplied with Duke 3D Atomic Edition.
BTW: Some Win32 ports exist, with the map editor and all. You should try it if you still have an installed copy.
Eg. the Rancid Meat D3D (http://www.rancidmeat.com/project.php3?id=1) port is good performance-wise.
And the JFDuke port (http://www.jonof.id.au/index.php?p=downloads&cat=1) has a lot of new features, including a ported BUILD editor in the package.
EDIT for clarity: making a build map doesn't help with mapping for ET:QW. The games and engines are radically different, so don't bother unless you want to play some old-school games.

please don't follow that advice, except you want to do a level for the duke3d engine.
the duke editor is completely different to the quakewars map editor. I found it very hard to work with, and I don't think learning this is going to help you with the quakewars editor at all.

You're right, it isn't going to help with ETQW. I was just telling him that you still can get build to work nowadays.
That's what you get if you trigger my nostalgia-sense. But I'll put a notice in my previous post.
