View Full Version : Character/class appearance

If you look at BF2, they have only one look per class. Meaning that everyone choosing the Support class for example, look exactly the same. It's not that this is a big thing during battle, but it is something I notice and find annoying.

Just to give an example, the team multiplayer in the game Vietcong allowed players to slightly alter their character to their liking. It was the little things that made the difference - you could choose among a few different heads and outfits/uniforms.

A different approach to this as well would be for the game to randomly generate a head/look for your newly spawned character after the old one died.

In addition to this I've only seen the two sides wear -one- type of uniform/outfit, even in winter settings, at least the humans would wear white cammo to blend in more and use their knowledge of the territory and conditions to their advantage. Humans adapt to their conditions, at least more so than an invading alien race like the Strogg would, and it should be reflected in the game.

I think it is way easier to identify what class the person is if it were all the same, but I do have to agree wearing green in jungle environments, and wearing white in arctic environments is cool.

I hate how in BF2142, I look at a guy, and I'm like, what class is he?

But unfortunately, this won't happen. If it were to happen, I would assume the game be delayed to fix bugs that this feature would happen to produce.

Well it still doesn't fully explain why we couldn't be able to alter the actual look, the face for example, of our character. The equipment and kit would be just the same to pretty quickly show what class the player is.

By the way... is anyone else bothered by the fact that Technician and Infiltrator look very similar ?

Looks like your best chance is to look at their shoulders, Infiltrator's are more spiky and less orange. And (not visible on this screenshot) infiltrator has skull logo on his chest.
From behind, it may be a bit easier, Technician carries some bottles with him.

Also technician also has backpack that looks like a flying vehicle.

See? That's the problem. It is easier to look at the appearance to know what class he is, than to look at his gear and how BF people call it, kits.

Face? Well I don't think SD would want to risk losing a population of those who are broke and have crap computers.

I played BF2142. I had a hard time figuring out what class my teammate was, let alone what team he's in because EU and PAC uniforms look too similar.

Doesnt matter how they look, just shoot em! lol. No, they do look alot like eachother. But with enough experience and playtime im sure every QW player could hold them apart.

Viperkhan

That's true Jinsu, and there might be more ingame to help team mates know who is a medic and not for example as well. The thing about random faces for each character is of course that it is a detail to at least try to give a character some individuality and 'identity' even if his role and purpose is exactly the same as the others on his team, with his class.

If I meet up with 5-6 other players using the Assault/soldier class, and we all look exactly the same (same face) that's just a downer - but that's just my humble opinion on this. In the midle of the fight of course this doesn't matter, but again, it's the attention to details I'm a huge fan of.

I'm thinking that the main reason they haven't done it is to avoid that the game has to load even more textures into the gaming world - but we should have reached a point soon where we should be able to play games, using characters that doesn't look "exactly" the same.

In a video I saw, friendly team-mates have large green icons above thier heads denoting what class they are.

Of course they all look similar, they're soldiers. The green icon above they're heads will probably be the best way to distinguish classes.

Dont be a 100% sure the way the classes look will be like that at the launch, theyre still making changes, i havent seen any big ones yet but take for example the engineer:

Its a small pic, and may be hard to see, but here you can see the Engineer as we know it:
http://pcmedia.gamespy.com/pc/image/article/702/702406/enemy-territory-quake-wars-20060419044346046.jpg

Now suddenly the engineer forgot to shave. also i think they might have removed some pockets on his belt, hard to see cause the pictures are taken from a different angle. Small changes, but they are still working on it!

You're right LionQ. All US Support class soldiers in BF did have the same face still though, regardless of their uniform skin. Of course they're meant to wear, and carry the same load-out of equipment, identifying them as this class. The point would be to try and avoid the 'clone copy' look, from one soldier of the same class to another. Now it's been brought to my attention that we will -very- clearly be able to see what class someone is just by looking at the floating logos.

With the drastical changes in the environment from for example a desert map to a winter map, a different type of cammo would add a lot, and make more sense when playing QW. This could definitely be applied for vehicles as well, as i'm sure the environment, icey/windy will affect gameplay in that way - cammo will add to the infantry combat. Something a sniper or infiltrator might appriciate for example.

One thing to add though, regarding the cammo - if all maps shift between outdoors and indoor areas a lot, it makes more sense to not bother, although if the initial stages of the map is an assault or etc which I presume they are most of the time, having the attacking side wearing cammo would be more appropriate and useful.

Would be a nice extra, wouldn't lose any sleep over it if all soldiers have the same face though.

It would be the case for Strogg and 2 of the GDF classes. The Field Ops class visor is transparent though.

Everyone wearing skimasks would rid of the problem, but where's the fun in not showing some faces :)

Would be easier if you could atleast change some certain attributes like the face , other than that it isnt to noticable in battle.

I say, you get to chose your looks and that sticks with you. Makes it much more harder to guess the threat that a oposing gamer is to you. And imo that gives more fun gameplay.

Large picture here, so I'm just linking this one:

It doesn't look like the gunship has white cammo, nor the pilots flying it.

A medic on both pictures, the first one looks a little grey/white'ish but could be the lighting in the picture judging from the one linked above.

What about the Recon class, how about a ghilli suit for human player, if your a recon sniper it would be good to look the part, and to actualy be able to hide by crawling into positions, staying prone and not moving. I hope Mega texture fixes this, because it sucks the life out of the class, when your a sniper/recon, in a ghilli suit, or not but lying prone in the distance and players can see you clear as day (BF2) because all the grass around you is no longer rendered.

Viperkhan

Very good point Archangel, I remember loads of people complaining about that in BF2 - I think the texture will fix it, luckily for most snipers out there. Being able to wear a Ghilli suit if it'll compliment your style of playing on a map, should definitely be a possibility.

You might wanna take a look at some new screenshots they have redone all the faces for the GDF, for example the Engineer is Asian and the Field Ops is Black.

Same with the Strogg the Constructor is now has Orange Armour and the technician has a big pack on his back much like a Ghostbuster.

For the shots go to the links page and check some of the other community sites.

lol return of the black field ops who loves blowing everything up

welcome the asian engineer who loves fixing things

a hispanic engineer would have been better, im hispanic myself and i would find it really funny seeing a hipanic building something like a barrier, or fixing a vehicle

but asians building walls are just as fun

after time you will tell the difference, most people i show W:ET to for the first time dont even know the difference between the two teams, they just shoot what moves

youll get used to it dont worry
