(This might be a little bit unrelated to ETQW.)
I made a little clip from a demo just to try and see how it turns out and try out some different codecs. I'm planning on making a real frag movie later with better footage and editing later on. Got a nice looking video for its size, 67 meg, but obviously youtube made it look terrible.

Noticed there are other ETQW clips on youtube that look much better than mine. Is there any way of improving quality of the upload or is it just a case of quarry being a bit monotone and low contrast?

What resolution, framerate and codec did you use to get 67mb?
For better quality, try Dailymotion (http://www.dailymotion.com)

720x576 (5:4 aspect ratio) 30 fps with h264 codec. It's probably the best codec I've tried, uses a bit more processing power to encode/decode but has great compression and runs natively on a lot of hardware nowadays.

Yeah the thing is I want it on YouTube for traffic, not quality. For those who want full quality I'll use free hosting sites like filefront, etc.

Have you tried x264? I can usually get 1152x720 res (720p-16:10 aspect) @ 30fps at around 25mb per min.. yours is averaging around 33+mb per min. Just for the ones that want higher quality from the free sites.. they usually go quite slow being free and all, and the less to download the better. There's an x264 guide on the site in my sig. Here's a quick trick clip (http://darkangel.source-dq.com/video/volcano_jumps.zip) i did with x264.

That clip has no audio, my clip has uncompressed .wav audio. Also, I just tried that codec for upload to YouTube. The point of this thread was to improve the YouTube video quality from game clips.

Use stage6 for uploading your HD movies.

Thanks, that was exactly what I was looking for. Weird it didn't show up in my searches. I guess the best way is just rendering three versions: one for download, one for youtube and one for stage6.divx.com.
One way of turning this into "youtube format" would be to add canvas size and then resize/resample it. Shouldn't be any problems with that right?
Made a 720p version of the cut demo I have, transcoded the audio (don't really like to do it but I'm being a bit lazy since this is just testing) and ended up with a 36 meg file.

I agree, makes a world of difference in quality. See this thread, I have links to the same videos on YouTube and Stage6. The Stage6 are much better quality. YouTube is great to get them online quickly.

The stage6 videos are also much larger than the youtube videos and require divx. Personally I don't see a reason to use stage6 at all for viewing, might as well get a high quality download instead. Since people still use it though it's a good way to distribute content.
