When you come face-to-face with an enemy, and he's maybe ten yards away, do you strafe back and forth and shoot, or do you crouch and zoom, hoping that you can get the critical couple of head shots before he can toast you? Or do you zoom and keep walking? I think I've seen players do this, but it's hard to pay attention to details whilst being shot at.

Strafe back and forth always. Zooming in and strafing is okay at a bit longer range. Crouching and zooming is okay at slightly longer ranges than that.
Its all about how fast you can move inside your enemies field of view and how fast he moves in yours. When you zoom in at close range your enemy can move a long way in your field of view. Similarly your movement speed slows down so you move slower in his making you easier to hit.

at close range, zooming is a recipe for a quick death

Does that mean that it is better to switch to the machine pistol at close ranges, rather than using the GPMG which is useless without sights

Depends.
For rifles and lacerators:
If the enemy is at bad-breath distance, it's unsighted circle-strafe.
If the enemy is at spitting distance, it's unsighted strafe.
If the enemy is at shouting distance, it's sighted strafe.
If the enemy is at throwing distance, it's sighted crouch.
Depends on the weapon too. With GPMG, it will almost always sight it except bad-breath distance. With MP, I usually don't sight: if the enemy is far away enough to need iron-sights, I throw a grenade instead.
