Possible ATI 7.11 driver issue

There have been a few reports regarding people having graphical issue - geometry being transparent or flashing colors - when both Catalyst AI and Tipple Buffering are enabled in the Catalyst control center (if either of there are turned off the issues do not appear to occur).

We are investigating the issue. If you experience any of these issues please post your findings with your dxdiag.

On ATI 7.11 Drivers


With triple buffering on and catalyst AI set to advanced get transparency issues and flashing/constant changes in levels of brightness
With triple buffering disabled and catalyst AI in standard mode still get flashing, but transparency issues are not present
With triple buffering disabled and catalist AI disabled still get flashing/changes in brightness

Decided to re-download and try ATI 7.11 drivers again this morning.

With Triple buffering disabled and AI on standard the flashing/changing in brightness was present. However I then additionally disabled soft particles and the flashing is gone for me.

There is a noticable increase in performance with ATI 7.11 Drivers.

Yup, getting bright flashes when I look around since Catalyst 7.11
Also the sky on Refinery turns all black sometimes.

Enabling/ disabling triple buffering and/ or adavanced A.I. won't change it.

I will edit this post and report other graphical glitches as they occur.

EDIT: Trees on Island are completely white.

Same for me and it doesn't depends on ai and triple buffer settings... i play with minimum settings, no triple buffering, no ai etc...

I've also been having this problem. Walls ''flicker'' especially the closer to them you get. Most noticeable is around the top buildings on 'island' (where you deliver the data disk).

Played a pcw yesterday on ATI 7.11 with no problems whatsoever on sewer, yet today when logging into a public the trees where really messed up (see attached screenshot). The strange things is I left that server, restarted game and logged into our war server and everything looks normal.

1)A.I. set to standart, tripple buffering off: higest fps, normal graphics except that the megatextures are loading much slower than normal
2)A.I. set to standart, tripple buffering on: as 1) but with graphical issues (disappearing objects: playermodels, vehicles, parts of buildings)
3)A.I. set to advanced, tripple buffering off: long mapload and very low fps at the beginning and when switching teams
4)A.I. set to advanced, tripple buffering on: as 3) but with graphical issues...
5)A.I. disabled, triple buffering off: lower fps than 1), normal graphics, megatextures are loading faster
6)A.I. disabled, triple buffering on: fps close to 1), normal graphics

All other 3D settings are on standart.

I also want to mention that the performance is worse since patch 1.2 than it was in 1.1 ( i already use FBODestinationBuffer "0" and ThreadedRenderer "2") and i get slowdowns where there weren't any before (for example on Refinery around the north filter or on Sewer around the emp generator).

Addition: In 1) i mentioned slower loading of megatextures, but that seemed to be a problem with my HDD settings.
But the textures are still loading faster when the A.I. is off.

Update: The problem with the loading of the megatextures differs from map to map. For example on Area22 there is no difference between setting A.I. on and A.I. off, while on Refinery the difference is distinct.

I have some strange bugs since the 7.11 Catalyst.
It's not very clear on these screenshots but there are some translucid boxes on the screen, it's often when I get in a vehicle or when the Violator is firing. On the map Slipgate there is almost always these translucid boxes when I'm in the iced part of the map.
On the map Volcano, sometimes the wall become black.
The Catalyst Control Center is not instaled on my computer.

And I don't remember if it's since I've instaled the new driver, but I have a massive FPS drop when I go into the nexus tower on the map Slipgate.

I can confirm that. Maybe it's just me but the fps loss when standing in the dust behind a vehicle seems also gone worse (from 100 - 120 to 10).

Looks like I won't be using those drivers. So whose fault is it? The ATI drivers or the programming of ET:QW? I'm really starting to get pissed with all these ATI card related issues. It took me a week after the 1.2 patch to get a playable game again with my x1950 pro.

i went back to 7.10 with tripple buffering on and AI disabled and my fps is faster. Will wait for a fix for the 7.11 driver or a patch from the devs. I think it´s a problem from both.

You & me to. I have disabled is Catalyst AI & left Tripple buffering enabled and it's working great { using the 7.10 drivers } :dance:

I was just playing around with some settings and i noticed the following: If the A.I. is enabled the CPU usage of etqw is above 90% (overall 100%). If the A.I. is diabled the CPU usage of etqw never exeeds 70%, it sometimes drops to 50% (overall ~70%). I'm curious, is that normal - shouldn't it always be overall 100% if the game is running (timingMethod"0")?
Note: Tested during offline play

1.2 Fixed all my slowdowns, I used to not be able to play for the first few minutes as I had like 1fps before 1.2. I still get the odd lag spike every so often but my ping generally never goes below 75 (my monitors refresh rate as I have vsync on)

i also had flickering textures, transparent triangles midscreen and black flickering places/skies with catalys 7.11 (tripple buffering and catalyst ai changes did not affect any of it)

went back to 7.9 which worked with the demo and is working with retails too.
the first 2-3 seconds during warmup are quite slow but i rather take that than what 7.11 did to me...

running x1950xt with 256mb

this 711 issue is startin to get to me off as the issue started with the new patch and the 710s did it not? b4 the patch the 710s werkd
so whats the werd whats really goin on, what just happened in that patch that didnt effect nvid players and only ati players ....

I decided to reinstall Catalyst 7.11 and try to fix the artifact problems....

This is what I see (15MB xvid Video):

Artifacts appears at all graphic settings (i tried to top settings in the settings menu and to get it to the lowest without any change).

Artifacts appears at all CCC settings with and without trible buffering, AI etc....

Artifacts are more or less frequent depending on the map you play... area22 seems to be less affected... rafinery is psicadelic.

Artifacts appear always near strogg energetic fields.

In my absolutly ignorant opinion these artifact I see in the game are related somehow to pixel shaders. There are any option to disable completly pixel shaders?

Any hints on how to try to fix the problem?

Logs, Cfg, cvars and various debug info in the zip :D

I must be lucky. I can't reproduce these graphical disorders ominobufo and agopo are reporting. No matter what settings i choose (in game and CCC). You got my dxdiag, i hope you'll find something.

I have a near to 100% crashing probability on Pacific Map, when moving near the Strogg starting Base's energy shields (if that's the correct name for these orange thingies that protect the bases).
I don't know whether that is connected to the 7.11 catalyst or if that was there before. so sorry for crossposting.

Catalyst VPU recover can recover once, but if I move near the shields again, I'm likely to crash again, with no recover the second time. I have to reboot.

I'm using steam, which replaced the demo with the full game when I purchased it - I was able to properly play the demo though.

Can't wait to see either patch 1.3 OR catalyst 7.12 to fix this, soon.

I tried to play all the three pacific maps (i don't know what map you intended).... volcano brings no artifact at all near the energy walls :D LOL
ATI engineers are not gettin xp for this...

P.s. absolute next patch will be 1.4 :)

oh, sorry: it's on the map Sewer (Japan)
and with all those problems ATI-users now have with all the different setups, I can imagine you cannot reproduce the error.

I only get problems after playing for an hour or so. If I restart the game after each campaign I never have any problems but if I keep playing it gets... well, see my screenshots in an earlier post.

Me too i'm aving some graphical issues since i installed Catalyst 7.11. I'm running the game on a Radeon 9800 pro i know it's old but it's still working fine (on low graphics settings ).

Seeing Black skies, some times when i grab a Cyclop or a Tank i see the square from the middle moving shader ( that hides all i aim whit a big plane gray square ) or when the light is directly in the screen all my picture become so bright like i turned my brightness to max setting.

I dunno if its the driver its self who's bugged or its the direct X that does not support the new standards of Catalyst

I'll look deeper and hope to find a answer or a solution hopefully

also game browser doesnt list number of currently activ players
just displays number of servs
also last nite i realized that qw was runnin outta my x86 folder as i am on xp64
so i uninstalled that one and reinstalled in its own dir, got all hopeful
but to no avail

Previously i hadn't been able to install the 7.11's (ATI's bizzare here-is-a-blank-notify-popup-crash-lol error), but decided earlier to install them manually to see if they fix my post 1.2 framerate drop.

I can't see any artifacts (AI off, Triple Buffering on or off, game no longer crashes with Triple Buffering on).

The behaviour with 7.11 is really like when i try to combat the massive post 1.2 patch framerate loss (http://community.enemyterritory.com/forums/showthread.php?t=15279&page=3) using 'r_useFBODestinationBuffer 0': ie, the framerate generally improves on most maps, except that i suddenly get massive mouse lag.

The framerate is vastly improved on Refinery, Volcano and Canyon, but Sewer is now unplayable; 10 - 25 FPS with more than half a second of mouse lag, over almost all of the map.

Now it used to be the case that 'r_useFBODestinationBuffer 0' would raise my FPS and also give me massive mouselag instead, and 'r_useFBODestinationBuffer 1' would drop my FPS back down to post 1.2 levels but remove the mouselag.

Now both settings appear to result in a generally improved FPS with massive mouselag, except on Sewer, where both result in an even poorer framerate and massive mouse lag. To clarify: whilst running cat 7.11, changing r_useFBODestinationBuffer between 0 and 1 results in no apparent difference in performance or response.


Time to wait another month for the 7.12's? I'll definitely need to revert to at least the 7.10's, because ET:QW is now even less playable than post 1.2. :/

I get Problems @Refinery when i change my view into the Sun ,the Brightness changes ,the Screenflashes.
There are some Bugs in the other Maps ,trees @The Ark and black fields in the sky some times.

You can see The Brightness in upper Part of the Screen is Higher then in the lower Part.

Testet:
Changed Catalyst AI to disabled ,its getting better but it is still there and the frames going down to under 20.
Changed Triple Buffering to ENABLED ,getting bigger Problems see the Attacht Screenshot in this Thread ,there are to Players in Front of me where you can only see the Weapons and to my left Side is a armadilo that you can see.
Changed CPU Frequency to normal Frequenz ,no effect.
Rolled QW back to Default Settings ,no effect.

Installed Catalyst 7.10 and got the ERROR: Bad floating point number in .. and et.exe Problems.
Like the Old Times i used 7.10.
Cleaned up the Driver Installation and tryed Omega Driver 3.8.421 .
With Triple Buffering On i got a et.exe Problem.
With Triple Buffering Off no Problems in 10Hours Playing.

in the begining i belived it was the sun or somthing, then i realsised that the color that is all around my screen is an color that is close to the right side of the screen, noticed whit when i ran past some blue thingy on the last objektive on that map whit protal thingy to the antarktis

similar issues on Linux client 1.2R2 and 1.2R5 (unplayable at the mo), though the preformance is much better... curiously the demo works flawlessly @version 1.1, and so do other games, though some mplayer codecs are now choking.

I also doubt it are only Ati's drivers. The game ran much better in version 1.1 . For me the trouble started mainly with the release of 1.2 .

for me it was worse: it started when I bought the game :( (having bought it via steam when 1.2 already was out)
The demo worked perfectly fine.

Steam? Have you already tried to redownload the game? I have HL2 (of course on DVD;) ), i downloaded it once instead of installing it from the DVD and i had many missing or corrupted textures...

7.12 driver have fix the qraphical errors but when the game changes to next set of maps mine still gets buggy. Hope thats what the etqw team is working on.

Thanks to above that have reported good things with 7.12's. I'll be updating now. So glad I skipped 7.11's (stayed with with 7.10 until now).

I had something happen during gameplay that was strange. When I was using a Stroy and I was up in the air, I noticed all the trees' branches and leaves were missing. But, when I landed on the ground, all the trees had all their branches and leaves on them. Is this a graphics problem on my end or is it a game bug?

And I also had a problem with one of the maps when the game started and we all went outside the bunker, the ground and mountains were black blocks and had no textures.

Warden that sounds like the graphic settings on your end are simply rendering the trees differently to give you the best FPS. On higher end cards you would probably get full detail.

And I also had a problem with one of the maps when the game started and we all went outside the bunker, the ground and mountains were black blocks and had no textures...That does sound a little dodgy. Looking at your driver log "Driver Date/Size: 12/4/2007" you will need to update your drivers.

rees turn into crystalline artifacts on NA campaign, and black smoke issues with africa campaign and 712's caused my whole sky to go black and start jittering
although this problems arnt immediatly apparent when playing against computer

dare i say this is a hit box/lod prob with PB?

seems like ati 7.14 still has this issue.

instead of black sky i sometimes had a "staying" sky where the image from the last frame looks like being in the sky. (sth like the mouse trails i know from windows but for all the sky area). only noticed it on the map with the databrain, the arc and the refinery.

i have 7.14 drivers (tells dxdiag).

issue is gone since i installed ati tray tools where i disabled triple buffering, disabled the "ATT Shared Memory" and disabled the ati hotkey poller

Thanks to above that have reported good things with 7.12's. I'll be updating now. So glad I skipped 7.11's (stayed with with 7.10 until now).

I retract this comment....I'm getting for the first time black and white screens. Running 1950x pro 256 meg. Hopefully ATI jump on these issues

I didn't know if I posted my message in the right place so I'm reposting it here:

Sup, I'm having the same error message for the video card combination as well. I just bought the game with the christmas money I had and was really anxious to get the game up and running until I saw this message that the thread is talking about.

Now before I begin about how I'm gonna try to update my stuff, My rig is:

1. AMD Athlon 3800+ (Single core 2.4 ghz)
2. 1 gig of Corsair Ram
3. Sapphire X1650XT
4. 450 Watt PSU
5. 80 Gig HDD
6. Fans, etc.


Well, I'm dling Catalyst 7.11 for XP and I'm also getting the Display Driver 6.11 for my X1650xt just like many of the people on this thread have recommended but I was worried about the following:

Am I getting the right things to update my rig?

Cause there's another driver called WDM Driver Catalyst 7.11 on the bottom of the page and I had no idea if I should get that instead of the 6.11 Display driver since its not 7.11 like you guys recommended.

What should I do?

i was having problems with the latest ati drivers where objects had no textures etc so i reverted back to 7.10. everything is fine so far except for the above. some objs still appear to have this checker board look when viewing from above - im flying in this screen shot.

my game install and os install is fresh. ive tried all the suggestions in this and other threads - cat ai, etc. this is the only problem that persists. this is the first time ive seen this problem.

hi all i have been having some issues with the ati radion hd 2400 series graphic card no matter what setting i use the and resolution the game will play for10-30 mins then it will just crash then i get a warnming triangle in the icon tray saying that the drivers have recovered i have looked in the problems i have got this message logged here!!!!!

Hard to tell from the small screenshot, but that looks normal - many objects in ETQW are designed to fade out at a certain distance, and they use a stipple pattern during the transition, in order to maintain performance.

So don't worry about that, it's as intended.

This thread should probably have an updated heading? 7.12?

Anyway, since disabling the catalyst AI i've had 0 issues with running 7.12's on a x1950pro 256meg.

after some further hours of playing with 7.12, I see no artifact errors (or not a lot) but still experience crashing/VPU freezing.

Again, especially on Pacific/Sewer-map as Strogg near these orange Strogg-barriers/fields/whateveryoucallit.

I have AI & Triple Buffering ON for now and the game only rarely crashes on other maps.

edit: Tried again, just to include logfiles & settings, and voila: Sewer near strogg-base-barriers = certain crash.

7.11-12 drivers i find to be jerky and crash a fair bit think ill go back to 7- 10 hope this is all fixed with new patch i dont see what the big problem is every other game works fine

no i didn't really look for a fix just reinstalled 7-10 runs fine on that.

8.1 is out now. I can play with tripple buff. and A.I. now, which I couldn't before.

I also experience a fps boost compared with earlier.

Hmm, for me 8.1 works good, not perfect but good. Compared to 7.10 it works definately better. I only have a little problem with the A.I. and r_useThreadedRenderer "2", as long as r_useThreadedRenderer is set to "0" it works fine when the A.I. is enabled (A.I. enabled gives me more FPS than r_useThreadedRenderer "2").

I have 8.1 drivers and it ran perfect before 1.4. Now I get all the same issues you are describing in your post.

I also get lag spikes that basically slow things down to 1-2 secs fps. I tab and my ping is like 5000 out of the blue. Other online games do not do this. It never did it before.

I have an ATI AGP 1950X Pro. I tried most of 7.xx series, 8.1 and 8.1 hotfix. The best driver for Quake Wars on my system is hands down Catalyst 6.12 . No visual glitches, no texture loading freezes, and maps load faster.

Your card is below minimum requirements and your drivers are (awful) old. You should first try to update the drivers http://game.amd.com/us-en/default.aspx (it seems like your card is not longer supported by Ati:o , so you may want to try these http://omegadrivers.net/;)), but there is no guarantee that it will work.

Hello :)

I'm on Catalyst 8.2 from Frebruary 2008.
It still shows thes same problems. Somtimes i got blinded like a flash grenade by extreme bright light which depends on my point of few.
Other times the screens turns into black and only radar "items" are visible, like the red enemy triangles...
It happens to me after about 3 maps or about 1 hour.
Important: Sometimes it changes "to normal" mode if i turn around 180°. If i turn around to basic view it gets dark again.
Already changed different settings ingame and in catalyst- no effect.

Average FPS is 130, NO lags- everything looks fine except the colour issue after some mapchanges.

Same problems with flickering textures an black or white textures since 1.4 after 3-6 Maps. Hope Id oder ATI help us....:rolleyes:

I also have some of those wierd texture problems i dont have it that much anymore after 8.2 driver but now when i`m driving a vehicle i dont see the cockpit and when i change to second position i do see the HUD.

What do you mean with you don't see the cockpit? Don't get me wrong, but you have not disabled it in the game options, or? If not, you may post a screenshot.

I have exactly the same problems as Vorpal Shot with the 8.2 drivers. Does anyone know how to solve this? The thing is the ati control center doesn't even install properly :(

Just to put my penny's worth in I get all these issues with 8.2 as well. I can play for about 5 maps before I have to restart the game. Best one so far was the whole sky looking like it was on fire while the ground was pitch black...cool for about 5 seconds. Still get the targeting reticles on some of the GDF rifles giving bright green shade alls.

8.3 has been out for a while. No problems with QW's at all using them.
