View Full Version : Slow FPS on NVidia(Multi-Monitor)? Workaround inside

Due to a driver bug in all versions of the NVidia drivers, ET:QW may be taking a big hit in FPS. In order to workaround this, go into your NVidia Control Panel, under 3D Options, and set "Multi Display Performance Mode" to "Single Display Performance Mode."

On an 8800GTX, this brought the FPS from 30 to 60+. I don't personally have an NVidia card, so I'm unsure as to the side-effects, but this will help ET:QW.

neither for me, in fact, the graphics seemed to look worse with no effect on fps.

should be common sense for most. but the drivers hide these things.

Great tip!

This only helps for people with multiple monitors. I wondered why my system never was able to reach more than 30 FPS on the absolutely lowest settings, and after changing this, I have constant 120fps...

Ok i have been having this problem and i followed your steps, but im still getting the same error. My drivers are up to date, i downloaded the new ones yesterday. It just wont run with dual monitors at all. What do i do apart from removing my second lcd?

wrong.

This only helps for people with multiple monitors...

right.

so maybe the threadstarter should rename the title to Slow FPS with Dualmonitor on NVidia ? Workaround inside...

Actually I never use two monitors on my machine and after a search I found the option ( old style control - don't like the new style layout ) I found it was set wrong ( ie it wasn't set to Single Display Performance Mode."
I certainly wouldn't have changed it so...

Yes it can affect people with a single monitor
and whilst it's not a hidden option, it wasn't that easy to find.

Not actually tried the beta with com_drawFPS 1 yet so I've no idea if it will make a difference.
I'm just about to install the latest drivers anyway, I was still on the previous version.

Indeed: THIS ISSUE DOES APPEAR TO AFFECT PEOPLE WITH SINGLE MONITOR SETUPS!

the default setting is multi display so unless you've fiddled with it before it should be just that.

it does work here. I have dual monitors and it works fine

This option should affect both people, even those who have one monitor. Whether you really have dual monitors, or just a single monitor, you'll both likely be taking an FPS hit. The thread subject is a bit misleading, but then again, so is the fix :)

I did this with my 7800 and the framerate went up noticeably (100%?), thanks. I only use 1 monitor.

For anyone playing the home game, I upgraded myself to an 8800GTS and this setting made a huge difference.

Wierd, I changed this setting and noticed no difference with my 8800GTX - My frames just randomly drop. Seems to happen most in doorways.

If it's a bug with Nvidia drivers, why does this only happen in QW to me? It's very annoying to have to disable my second monitor every time I want to play QW. Is there going to be a fix for this?

i was affected by this, before using dual monitor i was at 600x or 800x on low settings with minspec.cfg and fps were ~30 but dropping to 10~ in places.

Disabled secondary monitor, now playing at 1024x med/high settings and shadows on :p big improvement

i haven't noticed this in any other games, ive been using dual monitors for so long now :O, hopefully this is only a bug and will get fixed.

FWIW, there is already a game profile in the nvidia drivers for ET:QW (in the "programs" tab visible in the screenshot linked above), so you should be able to set this for ET:QW only, if for some reason you want acceleration on both screens at other times.

ins the option is the dualmonitor disable not included. I found the profile yesterday on my own and there was no setting for disabling dual monitor. I will look again at it today.

This occurs in all ET:QW, Quake 4 and Doom 3 (atleast for me). Didn't know about it till Salteh told me. :D

I did as instructed but it didn't help. :/ It locks me persistently at 7-10 FPS, no matter where I am. This is ironic considering when I do auto detect it'll set me to high/ultra on about everything.

I've tried tweaking the options to both normal, and low, with all shadows and etc. disabled. It is still 7-10 FPS even when I do that.

I'm a single monitor rig.

Did this a long time ago...didn't help me.

I wanted to chime in here for a sec.

I know some of you are saying it did help, and some are saying it didn't. I, for one, was one of those people that it didn't help much. But since I'm running a 7950gx2 (the bastard child of the nvidia family), I just assumed it was my card, and dealt with it. I tried everything, but nothing helped. I messed with sli profiles, single display performance settings, updated to the newest newest Direct X9, the works.

Then, on July 26th, forceware 162.18 drivers came out.

I installed them, and POOF! My machine ran exactly as I expected it. My performance is great.

So to all of those who are still having issues, make, MAKE, MAKE sure you're using the newest drivers. It may just have been for my card, but it made a world of difference for me.

I just upgraded to an 8800 gtx and had <10 fps in the menu (!!!!), after changing this setting everything is working as expected.

Is this issue known @ nvidia? Or is it a problem of ETQW?

Two ways to work around this:

1) disable all additional monitors/outputs when playing QW (this bug only crops up in QW, no other engine or game has an issue at the moment)

2) enable single-display performance mode in the new(read: PITA) nvidia control panel it should be on by default, imo. Until I did this, my 8800gtx/768mb, c2d@3200, 2GBDDR2-800, P35-chipset system played like a dog despite running supreme commander and everything else smoothly.

Same thing happened in Doom 3, so I just disabled my secondary display while in game. A pain, but that should also work for most folks.

You shouldn't need to disable the other display, just set the setting shown here:
http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z201/paloooz/Untitled-1-12.png

You can even set it for ET:QW only, as seen here:
