View Full Version : Gun sounds need more oomph!

I know this is the Beta and the sounds are probably not ironed out yet but If I might make a suggestion. All other sounds are great except the guns they just sound a little wimpy.

I was on a server by myself testing everything out and It sounds like the machinguns on the GDF side and a few of the guns on the Strogg side almost sound like each other with a slightly different pitch. It also sounds like my gun is struggling to spit the bullets out dudutdudut... dut... dutdudut, it stutters it wants to fire but it skips a beat and sounds bad for all the machine guns including strogg. just doesn't sound like a well built machine gun. The hand machine gun pistols with a slight change in the pitch sounds like the assault rifle and the big daddy support machine gun sounds funky too. It's like they all have the same rate of fire only a higher sound for some guns and slightly lower for others with the same stutter.

The big support gun should sound like it would leave a bruise on your arm after firing it from the shoulder, a nice big heavy sound with a steady rate of fire. In fact the American Army game (obviously) has the best sound for a support gun (SAW). I don't mean take that but listen to it to get an idea, when you hear that gun it makes you wet your pants when you see a line of tracers illuminating your cover and you hear that thing it makes you curl up in the fetal position asking mommy if it's going to be over soon. That is the sound I would like to hear from the guns in this game make them manly, both Strogg and GDF.:oppressor:

One last thing I think it would be nice to change the rate of fire for some of the weapons to single shot.

Everything else is fine, it is a bit fast but I'll get over that after I figure out what the hell I'm supposed to do and everyone else figures that out also, then there might be teamwork. We will see, I'm excited for it! Even though I suck, Bring it!! Just with better sounding weapons for the final release. PLEASE! :)

haha the SAW gun in AA is just aw inspiring. but not just that gun but others also sound great.

They probably used lower quality noises to keep the download size to a minimum.

lol i think that is more of a wish ;). can only hope so... though they could have done a low quality version of a sound that is more oomph. not much different in terms of size if you ask me.

I like the game alot, but i have to agree. Compaired to most of todays team based fps (or just FPS in general) some of the sound quality is just... Welcome to 8 years ago.

Even the tank sounds explosion sounds, it doesnt give me a feeling of fear at all. I happily run to it gunning it down (ofc i die ^_^). But when u fire a shell and it explodes in the distance, wheres the sound? Hello? KABOOM?!

the dudutdudut... dut... dutdudut is due to a bug in de audio rendering, i also have the same problem and they are going to fix it soon enough

but still they sound wimpy :p

The guns definitely don't sound very good right now.
The devs should look at Day of Defeat: Source for an example of good gun sounds.

And explosions don't sound like explosions either.

Sound is really important!

I wanna feel dizzy when an air strike happens right next to me!

The gun sounds aren't complete I wouldn't believe so they just made something simple for us to work with.

I want to leave this game with skid marks.:o The strogg look scary but at the moment they don't sound scary. I want to hear something that will make me run for cover.

I agree...all the sounds in the game just sound really weak...in other games when there's a machine gun firing at me the sound alone makes me take cover...when explosions happen near me I know that's an area I do not want to be in...with quake wars I don't get that same feedback...I mean I know it's there but I don't get the same "holy shit" feeling when there's lead flying over my head and grenades going off all around me like I do in other games...my setup:

klipsch 5.1 ultras

games which have excellent sound:
day of defeat source - guns sound really great...when a mg42 shoots you know it's lead death...also just kind of the ambient sounds of guns shooting in the background add a bit to it
battlefield 2/2142 - artillery explosions are wall shaking...just explosions in general really...same thing like dod...when bullets fly around you...you know it
thief 3 - great use of eax effects and sound positioning
call of duty series - you could play this game and outside your house someone would be taking cover behind a tree...probably one of the best games to demonstrate that "holy shit" feeling
red orchestra - great sound positioning...gun sounds are loud and boomy...it's probably the "worst" from this list...perhaps limited by the unreal 2.0 tech...but still sounds pretty damn good

Agree totally - the gun sounds are awful.

I must say too i dont like the GDF Assault Rifle. Looks almost like a turd with addons ¬_¬'

But yeah mainly the gun sounds.

Gun sounds are terrible, it sounds like I'm throwing an off potato at a wall when firing. Even when I turn uncompressed off -it's better but doesn't have that punch, that "oomph". I so agree.

Agreed, I would have to say that back in the day I lost a lot of interest in mods for Half Life that had wimpy, forgettable sounds that did not do much to bring you into 'the moment'.

Personally one of my favorite weapons of all time is the combine pulse rifle from HL2. I find myself just shooting at nothing sometimes just to hear the heavy thud-thud-thud... Its just the kind of sound that screams raw stopping power.

A little wimpy??? They don't even sound like guns, unless you count toy pop guns.

PointlesS, you should really give Project Reality a try, if you haven't yet. Sounds in this mod are just awesomely immersive.

All we need to do is supply them with bugs right now guys, I can assure you that the sounds will probably sound alot better in the game/retail than they sound now.
