View Full Version : Carpooling anyone?

Hi, I play all public games as I'm not in a clan or anything. I noticed that GDF teams often don't take advantage of their far superrior vehicle capacity. More often than not, the map begins and everyone runs to the nearest vehicle and takes it for themselves. Then not too far afterwords, all the vehichles are destroyed and everyone is forced to go on foot.
I have come up with the following strategey; Carpool! The armadillo is a great vehicle for transportation. It holds a driver, a front seat passenger, a gunner, and two more GDF in the back. That's 5 GDF; 3 of which can fire at Strogg on the move. Then we have the Trojan which holds a driver, a gunner, and 4 passengers (6 GDF.)
Taken this into account on a 24 player server, you can take 11 out of 12 players with you in these two vechiles alone, whilst the last GDF can just jump on a husky. Leaving the extra vechiles behind ensures that you will have a better chance of getting one again after the original gets trashed.
Then let's not forget the Bumblebee, which holds a pilot, two minigunners, and two other passengers (great for rocketeer GDF's.) That's another 5 GDF. Sadly, the Bee never seems to be utilized by anyone that I have seen. The most I have seen take off in the Bee at a time are about 3 GDF, usually only 1 or 2.
So, now GDF; let us not forget who likes it the most when the GDF don't carpool:
Strogg! Strogg! Strogg!
:infiltrator: :oppressor:
"They crumble"

Excellent point!
I always try to get others in a Vehic. If i am waiting for the Bee i let other field ops and coverts know im going to a "sniper" point. I asked others to fly so i can jump over an obj. etc. If i need to scram outta the base alone (quick jump on obj) then i try to grab a husky.
I think on the better servers / team based players try to get poeple on the same page anyway, but this is good to keep in mind.
Some people do honk the horn, meaning quick jump in...it also helps if you plan this in warmup (thats what it should be used for IMO).

how well does a fully loaded armadillo do against one strog obliterator?
you'll have half your team fragged in one shot

I'm sorry but everyone has different objectives which means everyone has a different place to go. If everyone hopped into an armadillo with a Hill hugger driving they'd all end up on a mountain half a map away from they're objective. I agree if ur all going to the same place but 50% of the time one person in the vehicle is gonna be pissed off with where they end up.

yeah, that's why the team must weigh in which strategy one should use, and use decoys.

True, but this is not always* the case. For example, I was attempting to organize our team for the first objective on Outskirts the other night (failed as usual lol), the following way:
Hey guys, lets get 3 soldiers and 2 medics in the Armadillo and rush the gate when the round starts. Well, no one listened but it was a* plan as opposed to no plan.
There are plenty of other cases where more than one class would be going in the same* or same general* direction. An example being medics and cov ops going to hack something like a slipgate or a sheild generator.
And as for the obliterater comment, passengers are free to bail out if they get locked on and don't trust the driver to fire a decoy.

Yeah, I'd definitely have to agree with this. I feel so lame trying to jump in a ride as some dude just jets off.

Especially on first spawn, chances are many guys are headed right for the objective. You jump in the jeep, you wait a second to see if anyone gets in, *then* you go. If you have company, you might have someone working the GPMG covering your ass as you bail out and try and plant, or build, or hack.
Just wait half a freakin second guys.

To prevent people from using the Armadillo as a one person vehicle I try to spawn and navigate my parachute as close to the Armadillo as possible so that I can be the driver and wait for passengers. In maps like Canyon I often spawn at the GDF base to take the Humblebee and fly it to the next spawnpoint to pick up teammates and drop them at the objective.

Usually alot of people simply walk past my armadillo/trojan even while honking my horn. A real shame.

Yeah, they do that a lot even when i have VOIP and say something like "vehicle ready; get in if you need a ride."
I think one reason is people get so used to one person running off with all the vehicles that they forget to use them.

I'm just sick of half the team going down in an armadillo,
Dear GDF, please carpool more often. It gives my Plasma Mortar exquisite kills with manual targeting.

Its dreadfull when the map starts they drive off alone, its not like a strogg will nuke it down before you reach your destination .... (unless you want to reach the stroggs spawnpoint to mow them down).

Yeah. If you drive full Armadillo, then you probably shouldn't choose the AVT and Opressor spamed location. A lot depends on the driver.
For example in Canyon worst you can do is to drive full Armadillo to bridge construction site using the original highway, because its always spamed by Opressor and Desecrator. But it is great tactical manuver if you take the team over the mountain and lead an surprise attack from flank. ;)

You don't have a plasma mortar at first spawn time. I think it's about a first rush which is good to be done together. Better chances of overwhelming enemy and taking over the objective.
Agree - it's frustrating trying to catch jetting off vehicle AS IS waiting for others to join in. First case I usually shoot a round or two at the vehicle. Second - honk or take them over and stop. Helps usually.
I didn't say I did. I just asked GDF to carpool more often. I need more multikills.

Its a bit of a gamble tbh. Get there quicker at the risk of Obliteration. The bailing on lock usually doesn't help as you get killed by the vehicle explosion anyway :( I usually wait for about 2 secs and jet off if no-one gets in (which is 90% of the time - maybe they've seen my driving 'skills' before :))
If you're going to hill-hug - get in a Husky :)

I usually take on passenger with me...not more!
(2 reasons:
1st: all others can't shoot or have to use their own weapons
2nd: if a Strogg/GDF destroys the car, he gets many kills)

Ppl can use their own weapon in Bumblebee and Armadillo I think.
Please consider giving a lift. Nobody have to go with you all the way. If they see you're going where they don't want to be necessarily they just jump out.

Someone should include in a mod an option to blow up an armadillo/trojan with one driver in it. :)

Yeah, fragged a Strogg for the first time, whilst riding in the back of an Armadillo with the shotty of all things, not too long ago

I hate when people on foot walk along the road or even just stand there in the middle as I approach in a vehicle with horn blaring and turbos all spun up. Then they get pissed and file a complaint when they get run over because I wasn't able to stop in time.

Happened to me, too - complaint and all! What's with that? It was a soldier with a rocket launcher - he ran into the middle of the road to lock and fire - must have thought it was good cover :O At least he shouldn't complain!
Back to topic:
Use your map for a quick look for any green arrows heading to your vehicle before you take off.
Here are what I have experienced on maps for vehicle horn usage:
Honk the horn for a solid second or so: waiting for passengers.
Honk the horn quickly on and off for get out of the way.
I don't mind if you shoot at me to get me to wait (just don't use the whole clip!) - its quick and easy. Some drivers DO NOT like it at all.
Use VOIP to ask: hey hold the trojan, etc.
And I agree with the above poster to use warmups to plan which vehicle is going where.

Imho the most important part for carpooling is the first rush.
In most cases there are no more than 2 main directions to head for and people heading for side missions can simply jump out on the way. Leaving half the team on foot before even taking the forward spawn can make a big difference.
This goes especially for the Trojan who can't be oneshotted (ramming is not shooting... :D ).

Speaking of first rushes, Constructor drives the hog away in ark. That makes me very mad.
In ark, for the first few seconds, if I'm not an aggressor, I run all the way to the objective, or use a slower vehicle. Hogs are for the first attack. Only when that doesn't work, the other classes can use the hog.
2 aggressors in one hog on the first rush is the best, since you can arm the charge faster.
If I'm an aggressor in a hog for the first rush, and no one is coming on to be the gunner, then I will drive away, rather than waste precious minutes.
I remember in area 22, with the titan, I was waiting for someone to be the gunner, and low and behold, they built the mining laser. What did I do? Waste my time waiting for a gunner.

Very good tip it realy does help is you wait up for someone so they can get back on the front line fighting.

What I hate most is when I spawn in the back to grab the Anansi/Tormentor and someone is already waiting. So we both wait for it to spawn while I am thinking I'll just go for the ride but once it is spawned they hop in and fly off full speed leaving me behind. Happened to me a few times.
Please when someone else is waiting on the platform and you are the first to get in just allow him to hop on as well. He might be useless as a gunner but he can def. use the ride if he wants it.

I'm just throwing in my two cents here, and it's probably just my old habits from BF2142 coming back (idiots that put a rocket in your exhaust if you take something they want, even when you are waiting for them to GET IN), but if you try to get me to stop by shooting me, I'll just ignore you or come back and run you over. Use VoIP or a Vsay. Unless someone has been repeatedly saying something on VoIP that I can't understand, then it's alright. I can usually get the message in that case, and do a sorry vsay. Otherwise...

I sometimes shoot once using the pistol because its faster than a vsay :(
Only map that this only bugs me is Slipgate. If someone drives off with it you get 4 players that need to walk to the forward spawn. Which cripples your first rush to the hackable objective.
