View Full Version : Death From Above (an oppressor strat)

1) spawn as oppressor
2) pull out your violator beacon
3) hop in an Icarus
4) locate enemy heavy vehicle
5) get the highest position possible near heavy vehicle
6) let your Icarus boosters charge to full
7) fly up as high as possible and exit your Icarus
8) immediately throw your violator beacon onto the heavy
9) press F and land safely
10) watch ensuing chaos
I have been having fun with this tactic.. it works really well on levels like Island or Quarry where there is high terrain surrounding pretty much everything and you can get to a good height to throw your beacon.

nice idea, wont work well against skilled opponents as those tend to avoid violators very efficiently.

Actually I sort of started using it to take out skilled tankers. When your in the air you can position yourself properly so you can throw the beacon down behind the tanker so they don't see it.
It works better because it allows you to get a perfect throw on your target while no being seen throwing the beacon or approaching the target.. then its just... SURPRISE.. lasers for everyone.
Havn't had the chance to test it in a match situation but from my use of it over the last 2 days it can have some great results in pubs and can catch the best tankers off guard. :)

the very throw is nice, the problem is the time u use on the preparation.

I don't get it. I mean whats so special of throwing it normally and throwing it from an Icarus?

A well timed strike > spam :)
but u need to live long enough for it to be effective, and the time it takes enhances the chance u will die trying:)

i use to do this wit the railgun,
fly high with the icarus,
jump out,
scope with the railgun,
shoot a gdf in the head(while in the air)
I did this quite a few times getting kills, wish i had recorded

I think all the good tankers etc are all using 3rd person (except me)...so they will see the beacon anyway and move. the trick is to cook your beacons and throw automatically so the enemy does not have time to run far.
If you see the toss, you know that most times you move perpendicular to a line in front of the guy to get away.

Gives time for the beacon to cook up and be ready right when it touches the ground, + it's coming from an angle the tanker does not expect and watch constantly.
He'll see the glowing explosion right behind me, and the violator will start right away.

I like to cook my beacons and throw them high in the air above the enemy. They explode in mid air and you never get a dudilator.

The trick is to orient yourself properly so that the violator starts in front of the tank. Doing this and throwing the beacon far enough behind the tank means even the best tankers do not have warning.
Again this isn't a strat for every map.. it is more useful for maps where there is already a lot of high objects to start from easily (outskirts, island, quarry, Valley to a lesser extent) and also reach quickly.
Hope to see You in my crosshair(sniper rifle).
You won't. :D
uhh space in 1.4 dont you ALWAYS get warning from that ridiculous voice that tells you to get outta there???
im just giving you a hard time heheh - the part that sounds cool is the whole hopping in and out of the icarus midair??

Man whoever knows wassup with using air strike properly already knows that ur 10 step progression gets u killed within 10 secs or less from landing. This get me pissed for having kids throwing the beacon wherever they want, completely miss this target, and die. If ur one of those kats and are on my team, u better expect a good ol BackStabb...

I'll normally drop it during an air drop to a forward spawn, survive the landing, cap the forward spawn and hold it down for a minute or two. Actually I don't think I've ever been killed in 10 seconds from landing.
The original post is about using this strat for taking out heavies but you can use it to rape spawns just as easily, if not better.
It's best used when you can execute it from an area the enemy isn't watching.. typically when you have just spawn you are not looking straight up ;)
I've used a similar strategy with plasma charges:
*Select plasma charge
*Jump on Icarus
*Fly directly above Generator and eject/ or just before and allow momentum to get you there
*As you land... plant in one motion.
Have done it with Violators before in the way that you have described. Its not a tactic that Ive seen used frequently though.
Edit: oh and I usually like pressing the spacebar for eject.

I like planting the charge on the icarus and dropping it on the objective to clear mines and enemies. Pointless, usually ineffective, and hilarious.

mmm, I should give the violator thing a try, sounds pretty neat, good at surprising people.

Did this tonight in the TGL quarter finals against mainLine Gaming. Treefrog was unfortunate enough to get taken by surprise by a violator during the third set ;).
GG's hk|- advances with a 4-2 win.

Also: impossible. You cannot plant a charge on an Icarus.

Dumb fire an oblitorator > Tank gone
Violators are used at their best when attacking a long area of deployables or creating a "wall" which stops engies disarming explosives on outside objectives like on salvage.

in a 6v6 situation any infantry taking out a heavy vehicle is worthwhile move.

I've tried this strat out during some of our clan matches and scrims. Although, I still suck at aiming, when it works...it works incredibly well.
tried it last night, too, during the CAL finals. Missed the tank, but it was worth a try.
p.s. Space got me during our TGL match.

The Titan can usually survive 1 violator maybe 2, assuming your at full health. :)

After a while you begin to know when this tactic is used and plan ahead of time for an escape route. I find the more players there are the more this might work simply because of the confusion of battle but with 16 or less it usually does not in my opinion.

This strat works great raping pub spawns. It is useful in 6v6 play as well, I have been successful with against high end teams, including CAL s1 champ tanker.

..or just cook the beacon and let it blow up mid air.
