i searched and didn't see a thread on this so...
how do people get so damned fast in the icarus?!!!11
well its actually quite easy to begin just hard to 'master'
there are three components to practice that take some understanding to acheive speed.
1) building air speed
2) not losing speed to ground (dont touch ground)
3) know when to use jets (the sprint key)
i'd like to start on 2 since its a bit easier to explain; if you hold your jump key you will not 'touch ground' and lose all your airspeed built up. its that easy just hold jump forever and you will always be building or breaking your airspeed (oversteering too much will break your speed instantly). this is very close to skiing in the tribes series (one of my fav!)
that leads to number 1; if you are not familiar with strafejumping consider this your indoctrination and get familiar! moving forwards (or backwards will work) while strafing left or right and looking (turning mouse) in the same direction as your strafe will build your airspeed. 3 things: move for/back-wards, strafe left/right, and turn the same direction as strafe. as long as your facing a bit off your target direction and moving your mouse still, you will build speed (very watered down version for beginers)
now that leads to the jet fuel; dont just fly straight up until your out of fuel, this is wastefull and very slow. all you need is a small hop off the ground to get you started with crazy speeds. tap your jets and start strafing low to the ground. since your always holding jump (skiing) you can even just strafe on the ground to build speed, just remeber to keep changing your strafe and mouse look directions in sync with eachother releative to your target. whenever you have an hill/wall that would kill your momentum, just fly up a bit. dont forget to jet at the top of ramps to get extra height out of little fuel usage.
if this isnt clear (at work atm) i can edit for clarity.
