View Full Version : Using Mines as explosives

Hey all, I've checked the first 8 pages and didn't find anything on using mines as explosives so I thought I'd state it.
Step 1, find an enemy deployable.
Step 2, place and arm up to 3 mines.
Step 3, drop a grenade.
Step 4, take a few steps back.
And boom.
2 unarmed mine set off roughly double the damage a grenade would do (tested on Psi-radar) and 3 armed mines will blow any turret and award >10XP.

:) yep.. it works :D
I also like to drop them on a husky and drive it into a Hog.. (the hog will kill me if I bail to late.. but ends up dead himself by the mines :))

why need to arm them on a deployable?

why need to arm them on a deployable?
After the beta SD decided that the ENG/CON had too much explosive power*, so they made unarmed mines do less damage than an armed mine.
Sooooo if you want to maximize damage you have to arm the mines, making it more time consuming and dangerous yet more rewarding.
*not 100% sure on this one.

Or do this (which I've done). Find deployable near the enemy spawn (like the first spawn of Strogg on Refinery) quickly place and arm your mines on the deployable, and wait for the strogg to respawn. Stay where you are, don't move, they will come over to you and when they do. The mines get triggered, killing you, the baddie and the deployable. :D

Just out of curiosity, the damage you make with these mines on a deployable...where does that XP go to?
Engineer/Constructor XP?
XP earned with mines?

Well you never know with this game...Blowing up secondary objectives with HE charges doesnt give you XP for explosives ;)

I tried this on Sewer earlier today, nice little trick.
I managed to keep harassing GDF deployables cause of this.

yeah, you can use this trick to kill enemies as well. Works quite well, if you know your enemy is close to your mine, but want to maximise your damage.
You can also arm mines on huskys and drive it close to a deployable or in a crowd of strogg. Just make sure you jump off before it goes off.
You can also just throw down 3 mines, unarmed, and they still do damage, just faster than arming them. But they won't be as good damage as armed mines. 3 unarmed mine around a titan, + 1 nade can kill about 40%+ of the titan's life. So still works.

3 armed mines on Armadillo front, you get a Hog copycat. Pretty lethal to Dessies, and unlike husky, you can stay inside, blow the nme up, run out for repair, rince & repeat.
Though I only tested this against bots :(
Wonder twin powers activate!
Grr. places mines on APT in Sewer.
Kamikaze_Snake hacks deployable
GDF Engineer does not understand why broken APT kills him.

mmm, that might work well from behind, but,
Just make sure the Des or the cyclops don't see you coming, or else you will be turned inside out into scrap metal and broken glass. Nasty way to go.

I tried it on an anansi once, arming 3 mines on it's front. I can assure you, don't try that against a cyclops. Although i ROFL'd quite a bit, it doesnt even kill the cyclops by 50%, and there is a fair chance you bounce off/ go past it, killing just yourself.

But I can assure you that it's great to kill Tormentors. You might even survive if you bail in time.

Wow, never thought of doing that. I must give this a try out, man that would be funny.

Wish I knew about this a few months ago, anyway nice trick. Syba showed me a few days ago. Also fun to plant them on enemy vehicles. I got into an armadillo without realizing the mine was attached on the other side so when a guy raced by on a husky and activated it, there was a huge mess of body and vehicle parts.

-Mine on a hammer silo in range of about +-60° of the actual target direction. Great boom in base...
-Mine on top of the arty gun. Quite tricky, hog is a nice ladder. First shell disables the arty.
-Mine on AVT. Not sure if one was enough. Anyway it disables itself.
Tried a Plasma Charge in a tank gun already..?
Are you still playing, FireWorks? I don't know what a Plasma Charge would do on a tank gun... I think it'd probably just shoot through because charges can only be disarmed or explode on their own, AFAIK.
Edit: oh you meant it might 'block' it. I didn't know that Plasma Charges stopped projectiles. I thought they were like med packs (?) where bullets just go through them.

So if I plant a mine on AVT(the launcher tube) it explodes itself?
Q2: works if mine is not armed?

So is it possible to jump on top of anansi, and even stay during the "slow" flight?

Great fun on enemy fliers, it blows it up, the guy trying to get in and all his little friends!

I was sort of kidding.. but I know it's possible.. (somewhere on these forums there's a picture of a Strogg Aggressor planting a charge on top of a flying anansi!.. :O but I can't find it atm :(

Did you guys ever think about using self arming mines as slow detonating grenades? :D really funny to run with self arming mines to the obj, drop them and then die and see the results ^^

Yeah but the problem with that is you have to wait half a minute for it to spawn, usually by then the enemy has found you. Unless you try and sneak in I guess but I usually leave fliers to the rocket noobs lol.

I kinda do that but not on the objective, usually throw them down where I know the enemy is likely to rush out from plus you don't want to tk all the time when your teams trying to complete the objective. A good idea is to put them down over a charge that's been planted but that works better with a 3rd eye, you can then time when to detonate and you don't even have to be near the objective.
P.S. Fireworks come back ;)

Great to see the almost disabled tank driving to the face off with the cyclops on refinery :D

Yes on the first and not sure on the second. I think it needs more damage than from one unarmed mine and the AVT rocket, but dropping all 3 might work.

Maybe one day the prophecy will be fulfilled and I shall rise again:oppressor::cool:

Q2: works if mine is not armed?
If the mine is not armed, and you explode it, it still does damage and have a large splash radius. The only problem with unarmed mine is that it doesn't do a lot of damage to infantry.
Unarmed mine adds an additional 31 damage, maximum is 31 damage to infantry (I tested it). So it is useful if you don't have time to arm a mine. You can just throw a nade at the mine, and it will still do a bit more damage than the nade by itself.
Unarmed mine has funny damage over distance, when you are close by to the mine, its damage is consistent at 31 damage until a point, where the damage starts to drop off. The splash radius is just as big as a armed mine, but the damage is very small.
Unarmed mine is much more effective on vehicles than to infantry, 3 unarmed mine + a sticky nade can kill more than 50% HP off a trojan. While 3 armed mine and a sticky nade will probably destroy it completely. But, it is a bit hard to arm mines on a moving trojan.
Exploding mine is also very useful when people try to jump over trip mines, for example, if you plant a trip mine, and you see people just jump over it. You can just throw a nade. The explosion will still hurt the enemy, even if you explode a friendly mine. You can do the same thing with enemy mines as well, exploding them while the enemy is close, so they get team killed.
There is only one thing with nades to explode mine:
If you use emp nade/scrambler nades, it won't cause enemy mines to explode, it will make the mines disappear, and the mine will not do any extra damage. So, if you play covert, you should be aware of that. Also, you can't kill friendly mines with emp/scrambler nades.
You can always just use your third eye or drone to blow the nades, but probably not worth it.

Ever try the death-ray upgrade for the husky?

I hope they don't fix this bug. But then again, by exploiting the same bug you can come up with stuff like this :
