View Full Version : Surviving Tripmines: Is it my imagination, a bug or luck?

Hey,
ive seen this happen a few times now and it happened to me once:
someones walking through tripmines, they go off and the person wo trip the mine lives.
only way that should be possible is by being spawnprotected but i dont think that was the case.
anyone else seen this happen? any explanations?

Well, you could always try to kill yourself with a nade or simply respawn to correct it.

i doubt however that this curtesy will be paid back in kind.

baybe the survivor-man walked through the tripmine as far as he could from the mine itself.
not:
--------:oppressor:------(tripmine)
but:
-:oppressor:-------------(tripmine)
it might work

What Sugar suggested might hold true. I can recall a few times i survive a tripmine, im always down to like less than 10hp with being full health and who knows, with a flak jacket perhaps as well.

my curiosity appreciates your input but is not yet satisified.
of course a flak jacket would help greatly in surviving everything, but maybe so will a teammate between you and the mine.
im not certain, its doesnt happen a lot and if it does its over quick - you blink you miss it.
The most recent happenstance was this morning on the map Area 22 while defending the gdf spawn and those doors arent very large. There shouldnt be too much room to be "furter away" from the mine.
Usually I plant tripmines as close to the floor as possible unless people start jumping over them suggesfully. Maybe its a combination of all 3?
having flak jacket, breaking the laser as far away from the mine on floorlevel as possible and maybe even having a teammate right next between you and the mine?
but still, i'd expect a multikill and not death because the supposedly dead start shooting me with a replacement mine in hand ;)
Thank god, most of the time this is what u get...

I like to take advantage of rushing people, who are impatient.
E.g.
I put a trip mine right after a corner, so the people who are abusing circle jump can't see it. And when they do its too late :p
Or
In Area 22, its hard to describe but i put a trip mine in the first level, right in the door way of where the building is blown up. Then i put a regular mine a few feet infront of it. THis so that circle jumpers that are impatient, jump straight into the normal mine, think they can go and hide behind the wall, but wats there a TRIPMINE, so its too late to turn back or stop, its kinda a cheap kill :p

tripping the laser from the farside witht flak jacket and 4 medics will let you live with like 10 hp.

Unless the teammate has 'zombie time' (in example, just after a revive) it wont help u. People dont 'absorb' splash damage, its like a radioactive wave.
But since hitboxes are so abnormal (as to what we were used to in q3 engine games) u cant really tell, i remember though using a teammate as a shield while he was revived , he took a direct hit from a panzer shot with me being intact and him just standing up. That panzerfaust paid for his mistake...

laser tripmines go off right away and tend to kill me
proximity trip mines can normally be eluded by running right past them with the knife out whilst jumping diagonally... you get clipped but not often killed ... unless there is another mine which gets set off by the first in your path

I'm pretty sure players absorb splash damage, as I do recall using people to shield me from explosions, and having it work.

yes yes, I am well aware that normal mines can be survived, especially when running pretty fast or going around corners.
were talking about trip/laser mines though...

This has happened to me a few times...
Person X is infront of me (teammate) he walks through a tripmine. Mine goes off and he takes no damage (no spawn shield). The tripmine disappears. I walk through the doorway 3-5 seconds later, and the tripmine kills me!
And yeah, you can use people to shield you from mines splash damage, I do it loads on Island.

not 100% sure if you would live or not, but the other possibility is the self-shock ability. You might make it through a trip mine if you use that.

Lots of medics and maximum distance lets you survive it. Letting the guy in front of you run through it first, then reviving him helps too :D
i was running really fast and i lagged right infront of a trip mine and i closed my eyes cause i knew i would be dead when i un-lagged but i didn't i was on 10hp

Ok, only, I mean only an Aggressor with HEALTH bounus. Must have health bounus can survive a trip mine at really close range.
Say if I was an aggressor with 145 Hp, I run into a door way with a trip mine. I MAY survive it, with possibly 5 to 10 Hp. It depends on how close I was to the trip mine, basically, depending on how you place the trip mine, and where you place it. It can make some slight difference. Sometimes, the trip mine is placed on an angle, or in a door way which is large than usual, you would have more chances to survive those if you are luck and hits it the correct way.
Even though trip mine explodes instantly, you are never really at point blank range to it. There is always a bit of lag, and also the trip mine can be a bit further away from you if it is placed in a door way which is large and you approached it the correct way.
I have tested many times, but generally if you not an Aggressor with 145 HP, trip mine is pretty much instant death.

Probably has to do with net hit prediction, I've had happen most on laggy servers.

It is really funny on a laggy server, ~350ping, I think I hit a trip mine. then after about 3 seconds, it showed me getting killed. I also managed to somehow frag a person with a nade before I died, which made no sense whatsoever.

Yup, happens when lags against / for you.
I'll survive mines, then shoot a clip at a strog, and die without him shooting :D
Probably just change servers, sometimes lags For you, sometimes Against you.

I've noticed this too.. Just today, i ran (not sprint) thru a tripmine and had NO damage done to me, even though it went off. It was cool at the time, but sucks in general... maybe i'll have to plant mines side by side from now on ;)

Well, I gotta tell you I never had lag working for me, always against me. But, sometimes it can be quite funny. I remember walking into a trip mine, and stopped just in time, and then moved backward trying to avoid it. Then I died from that trip mine two seconds later, and that made no sense. I was running on a pretty high ping, so I guess it must be a friendly nade or something that owned the mine, but it didn't seem like it.

Lag FOR me is pretty rare, I'll normally just leave the server...its not always the server anyways, I'm on wireless (mouse, KB AND ISP :D) so, its a combo.
For me was hilarious one time though, since I felt like I was just spray and praying, and knocked down 4 GDF on the Databrain map in the courtyard in 2 seconds..woot.

During a scrim the other night, someone on my team ran through a tripmine. I was right behind him and I died but he didn't.

I've definitely survived standard mines, but never a laser trip one. However I'm not one to rush either, so I haven't actually hit very many, odds are low of me experiencing anything like that I guess.
Oh, and I'm pretty sure players can absorb damage/block damage. Like, a player between yourself and an explosion, though it's not as unrealistic as WolfET, where you could take zero damage and be a foot from a large explosion. In ETQW explosions and splash damage seem more realistic.
Tonight I was playing on Volcano, and fortunately recording a demo. In this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s3fvfO4mOeA) you can see me deploying 3 tripmines, then a strogg passing through the first two without dying. You can hear and see an explosion, but those tripmines didn't blow (the second one will kill another strogg at the end of the video).
As you can see i.e. at 0:42, I was lagging a lot during that game. I've got the demo if someone want it.
Could be a bug?
Bye.

Don't forget about self shock
people can get their health up pretty high with a flakjacket, some medics, and a self shock

GLF, in this case I think its just the antilag. Your Client predicts that the guy runs in and shows you the detonation. But he actually jumped over and didnt trigger them. Thats also why the mines didnt get destroyed. Only the detonation was played (on your client, not really happend!).
Your mines are very fast and easily to pass with a jump. I suggest you plant them higher to really block the rushers.
flak jacket + 115 health = alive

If you have some medics on your team you can survive, better chance if your a Soldier/Aggressor cause of the health boost

I think you're right; it's the best explanation. Just seemed strange to me, at the moment it happened. I was lagging a lot during that match.

Yes, mines are easy to jump, but many people don't see the tripmine if it's placed near the ground, and just don't jump.
Bye :)
It happen to me also a couple of times, i think it's more luck then anything :)
