SUBJECT: SNIPING TIPS OR HINTS
I have a question for any good player out there, especally the STROGG!
I say this because when your the strogg you can use the iracus, so you can fly somewhere good for sniping.
Anyway, has ANY1 got any hints or tips 4 me please!
My main question is whats the best map 4 sniping

Quarry.
Remember the Railgun fire much faster.
Remember that you are useful only if you protect the objectiv or if you've done more than 20 kills.

I'd say canyon is the best map for sniping, but you'll have to be a bit mobile, or you'll get countersniped a lot
Switch from 2000dpi to 1200dpi for short/mid ranged sniping or 800dpi for long distance sniping. That or make binds for your sensitivity (which is actually _way_ better then what i do, but I'm a lazy git)
Best map: Any map (both indoors and outdoors)
Most fun map: valley and Salvage on GDF (especially the indoor part).
Most important thing if you're playing pubs: you're a bloody cvops, deploy a radar, move it forward and make sure it is always up. Also deploy 3rd eyes around objectives (both on offense and defense). Free legal wallhacks are priceless on pubs, your primary job is to provide them.
That said;
Actually contribute to the team, else go play something else. Don't only use your sniper rifle when you feel safe at half a map away and get the occasional stray person as a target.
knife people in the back while you're at it.
learn how to kill people unscoped in close range combat (vs. smg), you'll need it.
learn how fast the switch time to your blaster/pistol is and learn how to be accurate with it (hint: headshots will keep you alive)
(GDF) learn how to use 3rd eyes against vehicles in combination with EMP nades.
(Strogg) the transporter has a use, use it, same with flyer drones. Either take out the GDF who's doing an objective or keep the defenders hunting you.
People planting/disarming/hacking/etc are all not watching their back, a single knife stab kills them. Defend your objectives, stay close to it and knife (forget the sniper rifle).
The hacker (for taking disguises) gibs someone, 1 tap is enough to make them unrevivable, do it before the medics come.

Here's my 2cents (only about sniping not covops in general):
General:
Almost any outdoor map is good for sniping (indoor the scoped thing is usually more efficient). All you need to do is to find a good spot:
-preferably higher than the battlefield.
-preferably hard to access for enemies without being noticed (you got bad awareness of your neighbourhood).
-with a good view on most of the battlefield and/or on important target (i.e. the explosive charge some engineers will try to disarm).
-easy to access, there's no need to climb for half an hour to be on the best spot ever, nearby roof is usually ten time faster and less obvious.
Do not forget to deploy radar, sniping doesn't mean you should stick to item #3.
Once you're in position try to spot and take out enemy snipers first. They're the most dangerous thing for you.
Do not camp the same spot endlessly, once you've been discovered it's better to find another as people will first look where you were standing before.
Do not forget accuracy is increased in crouch/prone position.
Try to kill directly as much as you can, makes you harder to spot.
GDF specific:
You are limited in movement, reaching any exceptional spot will take you ages. However your snipe's trace is hardly noticeable. Regarding this you should prefer fast access to a spot or just snipe from the ground and move.
You got a MP if someone come too close, usually more efficient than sniper.
Reload when you can rather than when it's forced.
Strogg specific:
You got fast and efficient 3D movement abilities using either icarus or teleporter. For that reason you should try to find a spot which cannot be accessed walking (i.e. building roof) it will protect you from being backstabbed and such annoyance.
Railgun's damages decrease with its heat. Let it cool down when you can rather than spamming half damage shots.
The teleporter is also a great tool for fast radar redeployment. Either use it at radar to come back later or use it on your spot and go redeploy.
The flyer drone can help, but usually you will be too far for it to be efficient.
Last words:
Sniping may be really efficient when done at right time, however it's far from being the only thing a covops can do. Waiting outside for someone to come when action is inside (last part of ark for example) will just make you useless.
Know when take a disguise and capture the forward spawn. Or when to disable annoying stuff with EMPs.

Strogg specific tactics.
Strogg cov ops/snipers seem to be a little bit better at helping the team then GDS if played right. I'm almost always a strogg when playing cov ops so I'm no expert.
Deploy your radar 1st. If its damaged and nobody is repairing it after 5 minutes go and replace it.
Stay away from hill hugging if you can, find a rooftop or a bush with a decent view. Bush is better usually its less expected. Get Familiar with where the nice spots are on each map. Sacrifice a perfect view for survivability.
With the rail gun remember once youve gotten off a shot or two your current position is comprimised. Fall back to your second position etc etc.
Mix it up a lot with fire drones. Find a nice little secure corner and use these babies to terrorize GDF. Really good at killing hill huggers with no risk.
Its not always about geting the perfect head shot or overt kill. Damage them, suppress the oncoming attackers/defenders.
Your team will learn to appreciate that your keeping GDF suppressed.
Watch out for some of our inattentive strogg bretheren sometimes they love to jump in front of your as your pulling the trigger.
These inputs are good but the most crucial part of using a Railgun/Sniper Rifle is not revealed. This crucial part makes a sniper not just a hill hanger but a real killer in the front line.
I am waiting someone post it.

I would say its all about position, you basically find yourself a bottleneck or a stop point (an objective, a place where people lay mines, a dead body that is about to be revived) and you line yourself up so the people are walking towards or away from you, this helps reduce there movement because if you are sniping from side on they are all over the place and a harder target.
Also don't panic shoot, 1 head shot is all you need and all you want to use. As soon as you start laying down rounds you will start gathering attention.
I find that this formula helps the most in gathering large amounts of kills in a short time but! remember its all about winning the level so try and be supportive to the objective.
Here is a pic i made up a lil wile ago of a good spot to shoot people going for a disarm on the first stage in quarry.

Remember this is all in reference to good sniping, not how to use the cov/inf classes to their best.

Look at my key words: "using a Railgun/Sniper rifle."
An all-round sniper can snipe at any position, even indoor.

just learn to snipe while moving, and always get into a better position
don't stay in the same spot for too long
nothing much else to it
and learn to use the "f" key to zoom in, it is much faster

The sniper rifle and railgun can be used in any situation, but are not always preferred. When you're up close, or at medium range, the sniper rifle can deal a killing blow in just an instant. However, consistently landing these shots takes practice, and a good aim.
Personally, I'm not a fan of hanging back or climbing onto hilltops. When possible, I'll avoid the main battle, and try and create some confusion. Hanging around the same area, but constantly changing position between kills works wonders. Enemies will get there looking for you, and often find themselves looking in the wrong direction. All I have to do is make sure their head is under my crosshair when I pull the trigger.
Some general guides:
MOVE. Know the less popular routes, know the trickjumps, and know how to get from A to B fast without exposing yourself to enemy fire. Remember, a sniper that gets caught in the same place twice in a row, is a dead sniper.
Find the right tool for the job. You're not going to dispatch of 3 enemy medics in close quarters with a Railgun - start using that blaster.
You can disable vehicles and deployables. Do it. Your teammates will love you forever. And if you're lucky, you may well be able to catch the driver that's bailing out, or get a stab at the engineer when he's coming to fix his AVT.
Don't stay scoped. You scope for a quick check, and for the shot. You do not scope to stare down your sights until an enemy pops up - you'll be finding a pair of infiltrator spikes down your back well before that.
Learn to crouch-shoot. If you get surprised by an enemy that runs around a corner, do not wildly swing your mouse around and drag down the mousebutton. You'll miss either due to inaccuracy, or plainly the spread. Up close, crouching will give you an accurate enough shot to hit the head. Learn to move the mouse up to head-height quickly.
Decide the firefights. Pick out the damage dealers; the hyperblasters, the grenade launchers, and the rambo meds. THis'll make life easier on your teammates.
Learn how to play another class. If there's 4 covops on your team, you don't want to be the fifth. No, really, you don't.
A hackable objective is your responsibility. Do it.
Finally, practice. DO it a lot, against good opponents. Make sure you can rely on your aim and your map knowledge. Then practice even more, and experiment with new additions. Nobody ever got better by doing the same thing all the time (except for John Carmack, but.. yeah..)

Hmm,before patch 1.4 I was good with sniper rifle, now I cant shoot damn those hitpoints. Its hard to find a good spot,it seems everyone knows all good spots for shooting.Only one good thing-red triangles are off on some servers.
Good maps for sniper shooting is Canyon,Quarry,Valley,Salvage

A sniper is an infantry combatant or serviceman (e.g. police officer) who specializes in shooting from a concealed position over longer ranges than regular infantry
so technically it isn't sniping if it is used indoors (well unless its a pretty huge indoor environment).

However, when a game provides you with a close-quarters one-hit-kill weapon, and you can deal with the downsides, you're stupid not to. :D

lol, everyone was good at sniping in 1.2. Aim at the feet, voila, headshot.
Like most people have been saying, moving around is the key. Laying prone in the same spot the entire map will earn you a lot of countersnipers.
However, when a game provides you with a close-quarters one-hit-kill weapon, and you can deal with the downsides, you're stupid not to. :D
Agreed! And that is the difference between a mediocre sniper and an excellent one.

But thats not technically sniping, thats using the sniper rifle in close quarters combat. And i really wouldn't recommend it unless you are a pretty bad ass shot.

every map has snipeing spots, find them
i perfer accurized lace over railgun because the railgun gives your spot away easily
use stroy down/up for ammo, and always keep your health at 100% when you have more than 40 bullets
learn to use the teleporter and respawn, for stroyents

Stay off hilltops, snipe where its useful, don't stay in one spot, and aim for the head.
