View Full Version : Frontal Assault

I've noticed that most players use the main route to the objective. Why isn't anyone doing any flanking? For example, on the Canyon map after the SSM blows open the doors, GDF players all run up the paved road over the ridge. Why not use the notch the map designer put near the ruin spawn point? I learned a long time ago that the frontal assault is a last resort.

Your name is Zhukov and you don't approve of frontal assaults? LOL

I use the side or rear routes because I don't want my own ETQW avatar's head blown off.

Flanking is always useful, even if you get killed, it annoys the enemy, and shifts their focus. So, your team mates gets an easier time.

Force of habit perhaps and some people don't know how to set their spawn point so the main road is the only real option for them. Taking the route you are talking about costs too much time when you spawn at outpost. Good observation though and it's not the only place you can flank the enemy to get an objective done.

You can do the same thing on Island when you're playing GDF. When you spawn at base, load up a Trojan with a couple of engineers and medics and head for the Strogg entrance to the generator. Their attention will be focused on the entrances close to GDF forward spawn and the bunker hatch, so you have a good chance of surprising them. And if you're in a devious mood, you can use a couple of trip mines to stop/delay the reinforcements :) .

The same thing works for the next objective on Island. Set your spawn point to main base after the generator is repaired, grab a platypus and take the sea entrance to the vault door. You have a pretty good chance of surprising the Strogg with that and even if they are expecting you, it will still help your team. They will have to spread out their defense and this will work in your favour.

That tactic worked a long time quite well but players adapt. When I stopped playing you got hogged when taking the backdoor rush. I wonder how they counter that now :D

you got hogged when taking the backdoor rush

...

Anywaaay. It's really frustrating to be the only player seeing two trojans and a platypus taking that route, it's kinda hard to stop them all together.

I was in a platypus doing the early generator repair rush, and then HOG.

Ok after looking up "hogged"... I ment you got t0t4lly PW4n3d by a single hog.
With a little practicing (and a gunner) you get the trojans and the platypus.

If you can repair or get the plant on the door by taking those routes, great, but even if you don't succeed, you'll distract the defense and that's worth something too.

Yeah, but that is one hog and one strogg, who hogged one platypus, one engineer, and one medic.

I think that the hogger is at the advantage there, assume both teams are equal isn skill and number of players.

I hate getting obli-eD when I'm driving the boat, as for hogs, yeah they are nasty. But you should always try to evade it.

Also, remember hog can't really go deep into water, it can start leaking really badly inside.

well, almost the whole route from GDF base to the shore is shallow water anyway. so the hog can technically drive towards the GDF base without sinking.

The Strogg can go almost all the way out to that boat. When they near it, there's a sudden drop off and they drown, but up until that point they're fine. You can drive a Hog from the Strogg base spawn all the way to the GDF Base without ever hitting water that's too deep; I've done likewise as GDF (Nice surprise for the Strogg to have someone come from behind them during the Vault stage).

If the Trojan shoots the hog's wheels and there's someone at the AA RL, do you suppose something couldn't be done to avert getting hit by that beast?

True, but you really have to be careful with the hog even in swallow water, you can get stuck and things can get sinky very quickly. It is also very annoying when your hog gets stuck, and you try to get out of the hog, swim couple of metres and get back up on to the surface again.

The tactic still works most of the time mate. You just need a driver whose going to be aware of the hog also if you drive the exact path that DrFunk has shown and your fast enough, the hog wont notice you because you can hideout where the steep cliff is (4th arrow from the strogg entrance). You just need a reliable driver and fast head start.

There is one problem and that's the fact that strogg expect an early rush so you never get a complete build on the first rush anymore and if the rest of the team can't get the forward spawn then you run out of vehicles and have to start over. Depends on the team as well. Atleast that's my current experience.

Oh yeah and the boat route for the fast plant works like a charm half the time you get there before the door has even opened so you know there'll be very little defence if any, trouble is trying to defend on your own when Strogg come to dissarm.

I've been using the alternative route for the construction and its working pretty good. The only downside is when you meet up with a late spawner, you'll have to combat him and most often I use the grenade launcher so I cant scope him :(. Sometimes I take out the radar first if they called in any.

Havent really tried the 2nd alternative route to the vault door, never thought of it :).

If you like some fun with the Hog, play Canyon, take the Hog, drive it across the mountains right to the place where the MCP fires its missile and pwn the Titan from behind ;) (maybe the troyan as well)

I use hog in Valley, and drive it as if I were in a biker gang, with that circling action. Wild Hogs anyone?
