Right, I have been playing this game nearly 2 years now, with very low specs (around 40 - 60 fps with really low settings) and i have finally got around to getting a brand spanking new graphics card (Radeon HD 4850).

This is all very nice and all, but i have no idea what to do with my fps thing.
It was locked on 60, but now i need to change it for obvious reasons.
So i unlocked it, and wasnt sure how high to put the max, so for testings sake put it at around 500 (lol) and well when playing its jumps around from about 150 to 400 and i was wondering what the best thing to do is to get a stable fps. Do i lock it at say 200? 300? 400? or unlock it and let it go up to something......really im lost, although very happy as i just played the game with all the settings maxed for the first time ever and it runs at about 100 fps....and is beautiful

Lol, so yea any help is apreciated.
Thanks

what you want is
com_unlock_timingmethod 0
-> max frames possible

i find method 0 alot smoother than setting maxfps to e.g 120 and using timingmethod 1 but maybe thats taste
you also most likely want (if dual core) r_usethreadedrenderer 2 (if not already set)

depending on which display technology you use, there is not much point going higher than 60-120fps
my min reqs are: 90fps stable
optimal 120fps or higher

on a lcd more than 60 might not make sense
on a crt, go as high (or higher) as your refresh rate, but keep in mind that the higher the refresh rate, the less sharp the image gets (makes usually no sense going higher than 100-120hz on crt tech)

enjoy

what I found works best for me was testing it using different fps levels and keep the lowest one that is constantly maintained. For instance if you have it set to 180 and it stays there sometimes, but usually drops down then set it down to 150 and it stays there *most* of the time then leave it at that. I find that if it jumps around too much I have problems, but if it maintains a constant level then it feels much smoother. I use a LCD and I find that the game seems to be much smoother at a higher FPS, even though the monitor is locked at 60 Hz. None of my experiences are grounded in any sort of technical reasoning, just playing around with settings until I found what was optimal for me.
