View Full Version : I'm a crap shot - help me please!!

So the title of this thread pretty much says it all.
I am a really crap shot! Let me in to the objective and give me cover and 9 times out of 10 I'll do objective. But I just can't shoot!! I need your help guys and girls!
I know my accuracy is imrpoved by crouching and proning, I know the first few shots I fire will be the most accurate, I know that short bursts of fire are more usefull than holding down fire button. But still my accuracy is only 32% with assult rifle and 30% with lacerator.
What, if anything can I do to improve this? I would really appreciate some feed back from those more experienced players out there.
Thanks,
Moosea

I get 30% as well with both. Not saying I'm overly happy with my accuracy, but it certainly isn't bad.
You can try playing a bit of promod, to see what your accuracy really is. In vanilla, aiming in the general direction of your opponent will get you hits. In promod, the general area is not enough. You'll find you'll probably get a much lower accuracy there, but with some training, you can rack it up to 35% or above.

Yeah, I may try that, but to be honest I don't know that many people who play pro mod. So if any of you want to come kill a pro nOOb, add me in you friends list!

Under the "search" function, type "autoexec" and you'll see a variety of autoexec settings the top players use. Some will lower your game visual quality, but may improve performance such as targeting.
also, try using a lower mouse sensitivity

play for yourself first, team second
if you go out there expecting to land a cohesive team everytime you pub
this game will only frustrate you, no matter how much SD wants you to
believe in the pub-potential of this game.
30-32 isnt bad, same as me, and my kd/kpm isnt bad/or great.
playing obj in this game is all about spam, offensively &defensively.
if you want to work on your shot/acc, roam and concentrate on 1kill @a time.

i mean about match result - mean alot more, than numbers in tables[stats, sport results, and etc].
victory itself is good prize.

1) get a decent corded mouse
2) perhaps even a mousepad if you feel like you need it
3) try getting steady frames per second (120 would be perfect, but anything above 50-60 is enough)
4) adjust your mouse sensitivity properly: you may want to try,on an empty server or against bots with godmode, to focus on keeping your crosshair sticked to a stable little object whilst you strafe and move (lets say, that part that links the hog hyperblaster with the hog itself)
5) use a green small dot crosshair
6)play promod a bit

I have a real problem with my mouse. It sounds so silly! But my hands are only little and I struggle with most gaming mice. I find that they are designed for men and my fingers are in a strange position on the buttons of most mice. But I will go shopping ( I need to hold the mouse to check for comfort, so I can only take ideas from the net with me) and look for a good quality mouse that is the right size!
Thanks.

small mices do exist,it's all about your budget :)
the logitech g9 is expensive but kinda small and i guess the razer krait/diamondback arent huge either
Basiley

im personally prefer small mices[both for work and gaming]. in fact i simply CANNOT use bulky ones, which literally flooded mice market.
so i suggest check common notebook mouses - from MS and Logitech to recent BTC and A4, ones.
some of them also 1000Hz refresh and DPI sense above 3k.

On the topic of aim, the thing that has made the most difference for me is using a bright purple dot + circle crosshair
On the topic of mice, the Saitek Cyborg Mouse can change its size, and it has a hat switch on the side, perfect for your weapon/tool/item select keys

The only thing that really improved my accy was to calm down durin firefights, not pressing freneticaly my mouse button like I could do in Q3 or SoF2, vanilla spread avoid you to track properly (I mean all the time like you can do with a plasma in Q3 as exemple) your opponent if he's moving, so really take the time to aim, remember that 3 HS = kill, you dont need to unload your full clip on one guyz, take the time to aim and shot by burst.
Using this you'll prolly get killed more at the beginning cuz if you shoot less than usual and still fail @ aiming you'll kill less and die more (math...) but you'll progressively learn to aim well and being efficient with 5-10 shots per kill (talking about relatively close-medium range). well, I was 27% and using this (+promod an hour/day) make me go at 30% accy in less than a month and a half... I also raised my K/D even if i really die mucho cuz of my battlesense's general lack.
Well try this, hope this will help.

Ask McNite, I'm sure hes still a smart guy.
The 30%s is the baseline for not being a horrible player, so good job on making it that far. That you've played 900 hours suggests you've built up an adaquate knowledge base and have the dedication required to do the hard part.
You need to work on your mousing. If you search posts by me for "mouse acceleration" you'll probably find me being longwinded about useful stuff. This guy is also worth a look: http://www.pwngamer.com/node/12
Most of what he says is fairly smart but don't assume everything that works for him will work for you.
Other than that, throw yourself into Promod (usually most active 7-9pm GMT) and lose a lot. Try and find people who beat you really hard and work out why they beat you.
Also, play Quake Live.

Get smaller crosshairs. If your crosshair obsures the enemy head at your favorite shooting distance, its too big. Pink is a nice colour but its has a tendency to get lost among the red enemy info. So, I changed the enemy info to blue!

The trick I found really helpful with a sniper rifle is ALWAYS shoot at smallest magnification. Even at ultra long distances. Its zero spread, and the crosshair is almost static, you can pretty much fire on the run lol. Did this on quarry, 76% acc and most kills+ stroggies didnt get a single cell (well thats not my work, I just camped to the right of the ship and sniped 1 and 3 cells lol)
Also less sensitivity= more accurate. My is at 2.0 atm (5.0 being default, and Ill bring it down further still)

04-06-2009, 05:55 AM
LOL my sensitivity on vanilla is 0.6 and on pro it's .48. Once I changed my sensitivity to 0.6 on vanilla I saw 3% increase so far.

Where your bullets go is totally random in etqw.
So try to shoot people in the back, while they're shooting other people, or when yo'ure assisted by an APT or in a vehicle or something.
1v1 gunfights aren't needed.
Or bring a bigger gun.
Don't like this?
Record yourself and see what your enemies are doing. They're doing exactly that.

You accuracy is not really bad, maybe what you need to do is to work on your movement in game? If you're crouching or proning a lot, then you are a simple target to hit. If you keep on the move with some strafing and throw in a crouch or possibly a jump sometimes then you will not be an easy target. My accuracy has improved some with time, but good battlesense will get you farther if you can't do much better with your aim. Try and use the environment for cover, throw out a couple of med packs if you're going to hang out in one spot, etc.

Oops I miss read sorry.
My shooting setup is definitely strange, but I believe it works good for me. I'm an old wolf et player just starting to get into etqw.
I use a nostomo n52 for my keyboard/gamepad and a razer copperhead for my mouse setup. I have mouse accel turned OFF completely (Might need a registry tweak on winxp) but thats preference... some pro gamers def. use accel but I could never figure out how to shoot with it.
Here's the deal with the n52:
http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=164714
All your strafing is done with your left thumb only like on a gamepad, but you have the left side of the keyboard for weapon selects available to all 4 fingers.
I setup the "Fire" button to be the "F" key on the nostomo... your pointer is the strongest/fastest finger, and I wanted to seperate "Shooting" from "Aiming" in my mind. Also, if you have a tendancy to push your mouse buttons to hard (Or if your mouse buttons suck.. like the old logitech mx518) then your mouse will probably move a little when you press the button down, making your pointer go south of a headshot... :( My left mouse button is crouch (Do this in firefights/dodging) and right button is jump (_not_ in firefights because of the spread...)
Now for the mouse setup:
I like the copperhead because its a finger tip mouse. Your palm shouldn't touch it.... if flows under palm giving you better "Correction" ability while tracking. I use a razer mantis pad (I think)... its a large cloth pad but I know some really good players using func pads and other gaming pads/etc so I'm not that die hard on it.
Some fancy gaming mice these days have the ability to set the horizontal and vertical DPI differently, making your mouse more sensitive left to right rather then up to down, helping to keep the dot on the enemy's head while you have higher sensitivity to track as you strafe. The razer copperhead, diamond back, and death adder have this. The logitech g9 does to with the Logitech set point software.
I learned how to shoot/play fps on wolf et years ago, and I'm just getting back into (Hopefully competitively/clan play) again after a few years. I think some of the wolf et players are amazing shots.... and the strategies for firefights from what I can tell somewhat carry over.
Somebody made a great guide to shooting with helpful practice and drills for wolf et years ago. I believe it was called "Aiming By Raziel" and it had all sorts of drills/etc in a 100mb zip file with movies and what not. This would def. be worth checking out if you could find it on the web.
Also, I think it would be great to make a practice map similar to ET Headshot just for practicing this stuff. My clan back in the day got a lot better at shooting when we practiced on this map that was designed specifically for aiming and 1 on 1 firefights.
Now if I could just get the rust off, figure out how to use those vehicles, and find a clan...
good luck.

Aiming by raziel is getting kind of old these days. Its about time someone made an updated version (because a lot of raz's technical stuff is now incorrect or irrelevent) and stuck it on youtube or something.
