View Full Version : Playing GDF and winning a map for a change 101

The magic word tonight is Medics!
People don't seem to get it, GDF needs medics, lots of them. They can shoot, they can kill, they have insta-revives. They can drop supply crates which give you unlimited ammo, health and nades and on top of that, every player on the GDF team gets an extra 5 HP for every medic on their team. The maximum health boost you can get that way is 20 HP, which would mean that there are 4 medics on your team. Even if you suck at being a medic, simply choosing that class and killing enemies is enough to help your team, even if you don't revive anyone or never drop a health pack.
I'm not gonna say it's the major reason for the difference in map wins between GDF and Strogg but it certainly plays a part in that. GDF teams don't seem to realize the potential they have. Too often I join a GDF team that has no or just one medic and five or six players in the objective class. Bad choice! Two or three medics and the same number of objective players might get you a lot further.
Hindsight is always 20/20, but this wasn't a really good choice by SD in my opinion. In theory it's a nice counter to the stroy-up and down that Strogg can use, but it requires that players realize how it works and that their choices will affect their team. That's too much to ask for pub play.

On the other hand, you'd be amazed to see how many people fail to realise stroyup/down exists as well.
So it's fairly balanced ;)

true, this statement can be applied to several aspects of this game
this imbalance is the main reason i quit playing objectives all together

completely agree, just more so. ESPECIALLY when it is a ~objective();
so teams tend to get a lot of soldiers, you really only need one to plant, or mb 2 extras to finish arming it, which is different from hack and build, where taps keep it alive. if we had a 10 man team, I would suggest in general, about 4-6 medics, perhaps a covert or Fops, leaving 3-5 soldiers. A good medic can keep thing moving much more than a good soldier. (unless they are godly with the GPMG or the situation requires an RL.)
another thing to help GDF win, yes, here it comes: the anansi. Especially in maps like quarry, ark, canyon, all africa, area22, outskirts somewhat, and estate.

I'm organizing a seminar on "supply crate dropping" and I wonder if you'd be interested in attending that. Admittance is € 100 but it's tax deductible for your company and lunch is included. We have 4 of the top supply crate droppers signed as speakers, but I can't give out their names yet. I hope you'll understand.

where's your english?
nolejz.. it's that I speak phonetic, I think you mean "knowledge"?
medic comes with LOW ammo, while Techician has infinite ammo... most people don't like playing medic because of that... (specially on pubs) I know what you're going to say: they have a friggin crate!.. again, on an average pub a crate won't last that long... and it takes their ability to throw medpacks away for a while.. thus they can't heal themselves, and go play Soldier with heavy weapons or Engineer for easy deployable kills...

I'm not gonna say it's the major reason for the difference in map wins between GDF and Strogg but it certainly plays a part in that.
Dr. Funkenstein
I thought the main prevailing school of thought about the win differential was the pre 1.5 patch MCP. The dark ages of full holds on the MCP phase of maps. I totally agree about the fundamental importance of the GDF medic to the team and how most players fail to recognize it thus undermining the inherent balance in the game. That said I think since the 1.5 patch GDF have been winning at least half the matches and might be gaining on strogg though I can't recall the ratio prior to 1.5 to be sure.

Played some GDF last night, we got totally pwnd on Canyon (I was the only medic) but then someone else picked up the baton too. We lost sewer but at least got to the last objective, by the end of the level we had 4-5 medics. Needless to say with 4-5 medics we managed a full-hold on volcano.
Obviously this is just one example but it seems to demonstrate the power of good medics effectively.
BTW: I have 450 hours of play and broke 4 personal bests on the volcano hold. Rock on.

I may be what some call a "stingy medic" But I feel that the longer I stay alive the longer my team mates have a chance of me doing "my thing". I'm no good too anyone if I'm dead waiting whatever time is left on the respawn clock. . If you are too far away, sorry, I wish I could help but I can't. I tend too have too chase people just too give them medpacks. I want to say, "F" it" but I cant .

Soldier is antivehicle/deployable mostly. The GPMG is a strong anti-infantry weapon, but too immobile to last long.
The medic on the other hand, can kill stuff, run around a corner to heal back up and repeat. He has high movement speed + infinate ammo and grenades as long as his supply crate is available.
Medic is more of an infantry killer class than a soldier, that's for sure.

Reviving teammates is only important when it's safe, or when they are absolutely neccesary for the current objective, or when you're about to die anyway.
In all other cases, it's better to kill first, and then revive.

When you revive a player, he gets 3 seconds of invulnerability to run to cover. If he's a total noob and doesn't know this, he'll start firing and die right there, otherwise he'll run back a bit to cover and come back to avenge his own death.

Here on the east coast of the US I play with a ping of around 35 - 70ms. Over seas its more like 140 - 180. I can hang with that. It doesn't really seem all that different to me. So add me and I'll play with you almost anywhere. I wont try and shoot you in the face but I will be an objective whore.
This game's classes would probably be less confusing if the "Medic" was actually called "Marine" and the "Soldier" something along the lines of "Demolition Man".
This mainly applies to GDF, as the Aggressor actually IS a decent frontliner thanks to the Hyperblaster and the Technician is inferior to the Medic as a combat class.
Then maybe idiotic discussions about "Rambo Medics" (which is a term exclusively used by terrible players) would finally stop.
