View Full Version : The Benefit of a Team Captain

When possible it seems a really good idea to all agree on a Team Captain. Doesn't everyone/anyone like the idea?

I think some certain players would make really good leaders. Maybe not I, but I've played with some cool chaps a couple times.

Thoughts?

not possible on pubs, it takes a certain kind of person AND practice, to be able to obey orders from a complete stranger. People take themselves far to seriously for this to work on a bigger scale

you will get a lot of leader wannabes and people will still do their thing, completely ignorng any kind of orders.

Szak is right.

The game is very dynamic.

You would need this captain to know what is going on all over the battle field (intelligence – Intel) so that they could make good decisions in directing their forces, which means having the team members report the situation (situation report – Sit-Rep) around them. But with 12 players per team, you would need them to limit their chat to critical information or you would end up with a cacophony of chatter. This would also require that the players had enough game experience to know what information was critical, and know how to briefly state it. This Captain would likewise have to speak briefly so that he/she could coordinate people’s actions quickly. This would require a kind of abbreviated battle language that everyone agreed upon or understood, and also pre-supposes that this Captain would know where his team mates are, while keeping in mind what class they were and their relative capabilities as players so that no-one was asked to do a mission critical job that they were not capable of.

Having said all of this, players capable of playing in this manner are all going to be very experienced and have their own ideas about what it takes to take the various objectives. They are not going to like taking direction from someone else unless they play with them all of the time and develop some rapport and mutual respect, which means a clan member or close friend.

By the time you get to this level playing with a clan, you don’t need a Captain. Everyone knows what to do, they have already developed a kind of in game situational awareness, and they all have VOIP so they communicate as needed and work in loose cooperation.

Unless you play with people you've played with a lot before, so they know you and respect you and are willing to take your orders, this will lead to kickvotes or mutevotes.

For the record, I'll be the first to start em, I hate it when randoms tell me what to do, especially if it's BS.

Word! I don't like a "team coach" either.

A good clan can pull that off with no problem.

the quality of pulling that off is what differentiates betwenn high skill and med

you will never learn enough of it; and you also need to personalize the process, that is, a new player on the rooster will restart the whole interaction; thats why clans with the most stable lineups are usually the most effective too.

hang on, you put new players on a rooster? What's the point of that exactly?

people abandon the game, change location, like me right now; possibly a fight between players so some kind of a split is required, some might be more ambitious than others, or maybe someone is truly fed up with playing the tanker etc. etc.

The role of a good tanker was always in a deficit in the comp scene.

Rarely you will get a perfectly steady lineup for your entire comp 'career'

Within clan-totally. On pub- you'll be considered an ass telling people how they should live (not that you are). Certain bits of info, suggestions- work sometimes, orders-fail.

2 Words Voice Chat. And specifically Team Voice Chat.
Me and my friend use the voice chat almost every time we enter a game. We play around 12 to 2 AM Eastern Europe Time, and alomst evertime within French Servers and i must say that with the correct serious people we make one hell of a games.

It is really usefull to give info with the voce chat to the team like that you are going to bombard an area with artillery and warn them to clear the area for the time being. Or coordinate an offensive on some of the flanks while someone with BB is going behind enemy lines to sabotage vital objectives.

There is not a 1 commander but a coalition of people who are guiding the team. Especially critical are the field ops/ oppressors and snipers/infilatrators. Which are almost every game at high ground and can give information on the enemy movement.

There are a few around. Obviously a minority, but they're around.

Also, in regards to giving orders... By all means, if you're noticing your team is running around like a group of headless chickens, and no one's using VOIP, might as well. Just don't be a dick about it if no one listens to you. Trying never hurt anyone's chances.
