View Full Version : Switch to Field Ops for a round

Sometimes it’s quicker to do it yourself. Switch to field ops for one round, run to the objective, throw a violator/vampire and respawn. It will take a while for your airstrike to regenerate, so go back to the required class for a run on the objective. If everyone is going back and forth you can put a lot of fire power on the enemy.

Oh, before you take off on your run, switch back without respawning (just deploy) so that when you die you are right back to the correct class (in case you get one of those one second respawns).

depending on the objective, yeah.

Excellent advice!

While the other Field Opses are waiting for their Hammers to recharge, you can do their job in the meantime and throw that desperately needed Vampire and switch back to whatever you were before. Great tactic for MCP stages when no one is taking out those turrets in front of outpost.

Sometimes you get the feeling that "being useless in general" is actually in their job description

I like this idea, especially as I can use my* custom cvar thing to change class without accessing the limbo menu and /kill with 1 second on the clock.

It's a real shame people who actually play field ops are too busy waiting for hammers to recharge and working on their ammo drop award to do this :(

*It's not really mine, I borrowed it from murka10's post on these forums, check it out: http://community.enemyterritory.com/forums/showthread.php?t=32673

well, if you switch class your deployable gets destroyed, and it takes pretty long to deploy that bloody artillery.

Yes. I don't even bother setting up artie when I'm doing this.

I just:
Get in,
Drop an airstrike marker,
Check the respawn clock,
Try to strategically ditch my grenades,
Check the respawn clock again,
try to make a kill with my AR or Lacerator and
Hit the Kill button just before the clock runs out.

Field ops are my pet hate in this game I think. 90% seem to be rubbish noob xp whores. When we're getting pwnd by a titan or anansi or facing a wall of defense turrets and we have 3 oppressors it destroys me. DO YOUR FRIGGIN JOB!

It's good advice, if a bit more micromanage-y than probably most people are inclined to go for.

Given how Field Ops/Oppressors play in ETWQ, while powerful, I think maybe SD designed them a bit too weakly, in terms of the recharge rates on the deployable artillery compared with the Vampire/Violator. They tend to require a fairly disorganized opposite team to do well and really shine as a class, due to the long waits between uses of their artillery. Oppressors have their shields--which are very often unappreciated: about the only times you're not going to get someone complaining about your shields is if you drop them over a tech reviving/spawnhosting, or you smack them onto an objective--but the Field Ops only has his ammo drop, which is usually only useful with a very organized team, indoors(as the medic supply crate handles ammo outdoors far better).

Artillery is strictly limited by several things:
1. Recharge rate. (Which IIRC scales with the number of Field Ops on a team. More of you = slower.)
2. Reload rate.
3. Attacks on your deployable disabling it.
4. AITs blocking your artillery entirely.
5. Staying alive during the spotting process, with the laser beam visible.
6. Having to stay as your class to set up the deployable, preventing this trick.

Compare with an airstrike, where you just have to bunnyhop(or take a vehicle), fire and forget. The only defence is killing you before you throw. You only have to deal with the recharge rate. *edit* My bad, you can also sit on the marker grenade to block it, but this is infeasible most of the time.

Something I may play around with in QWTA at some point...

Aw why didn't I think of this (smacks head), but maybe every time I'm a field ops, I'm just to lazy to switch back and forth or that I'm to lazy to make a cvar.

Errr this is what spawn hosts are for... hold em off and switch to Oppressor to give farewell Vio-Kiss when MCP breaks through, obj built...

Combining a quick class-change respawn with a spawn host and you've got yourself a powerful weapon!

E.g. I'm technician on refinery, there's a plant down and I've just killed the gdf defending it. Make a spawn host, respawn as Constructor and disarm. Job done.

thats why i dont like to play as gdf

Mmm... Is ironic that I never got credit for continuously switching from field ops to engi to fix the mcp. Well, I was doing it for fun and to help the team, so I don't feel bad about it. But you're right, this tactic is something that engi's and field ops should do by default. Most field ops become useless once they use a hammer or vamp and then you see them getting in the way because they're trying to give you amo instead of shooting the strogg.

With this in mind, strogg can also do the same where they need a vio and someone to plant. Why wait for the vio when you can plant in the meantime  As a strogg I never switch to constructor while I'm waiting for my vio because I suck at constructing objectives and I rather get a hyper or obli and be more useful.

But I guess this only works if you play field ops/oppressor for fun and not for shiny medals.

Tip: Never use a vio/vamp on the same place where your enemy is using them AKA your deployables and friends ;)
