When defending, secure the objective then push out. If you wait at the objective, you are forced to fight in crisis whenever you engage the enemy. If they overwhelm your defense, you may not get the chance to retake it. If you run straight to peripheral work, you run the risk of leaving the objective undefended.
When defending, set forward defenses at critical choke points. The further out you push, the thinner your defenses become. The enemy has to come to you, so, set up in places where they will either be exposed, or where they have only a narrow route in and you have some cover or some nice places to set up mines or stashes of med-packs or stroyent. Watch your radar!
