Nice tutorial, going to give it a try tonight.

I've gone through the DEM mess several times, trying to find the right combinations of programs needed, accounts needed, and how to actually get the files from the private sector sites... never could get it all working.

just found this very nice little tool on the net:

it mass converts image files from/to dds files, very handy as acdsee does not have dds support

of course you could use the nvidia plugin for photoshop as well. Providing you have photoshop.

http://developer.nvidia.com/object/photoshop_dds_plugins.html

as well the thumbnail viewer.

sure, but the nvidia photoshop plugin is just im/export of the current image, if you have more than a handful of files, you have a problem.
ddscv can convert as many files as you want.

But, given that all you're doing is replacing standard textures and rendering out it may be easier and quicker to find/replace/render/save from Blender.

Do I have to use blender? No, but it might make your life easier because there probably will be an export script for ET:QW models. XSI's Mod tool is not commonly used in the "Doom 3 community" and as such, might lack import and/or export scripts.

For most games, the developers use Lightwave for static modeling and Maya for all animated models. Other programs might be used as well, but I guess models are run through the first two programs to get the models in their final format.

First: this project is not related to / sponsored by Splash Damage in any way. Nothing on the website has been written by Splash Damage, nor has any uber-secret SD information been used or leaked on the website .

Basically it's meant to be a place where people can post reviews, articles(tutorials) and rate/review maps :). It can also host 50-300mb map files.
I'd love to write more, but I'm pretty busy with this uber SDK-beta release.

Someday I will muster the courage to learn the ET:QW editor. Is it easier or harder or just plain different that UnrealED? I mapped a lot with TVed (Tribes:Vengeance's modification of UnrealED) and messed around with the original Tribes 1 map editor back in the day. That is as far as my experience goes.

The ET:QW Editor is slightly more complex when you get into things like terrain and gametype scripting. Terrain usually requires you to pick up some solid modeling fundamentals, and with gametype setup, it requires some scripting knowledge.

If you are using BSP, assigning textures to surfaces and moving around assets in the world, then it isn't that much different than UnrealEd.

Luckily, all of the tough parts are actually part of systems that work extremely well and you'll learn to appreciate them once you get over the learning curve. Much of the mapping process is covered by the wiki so skim through that if you want an idea of how the mapping process works- http://wiki.splashdamage.com/index.php/Enemy_Territory:_QUAKE_Wars

I could never get Blender to export the correct material tagname in an .obj file - It works fine with ASE though.

For OBJ you have to use a double underscore instead of a forward slash.

e.g. "megatextures__area22"

I had that part of it, when I export the terrain as .obj it puts this line in the .obj file pointing to a material file.mtllib qw_002.mtl
If I change it to "usemtl megatextures__mymap" it doesn't work.

When I changed the file contents of qw_002.mtl to "usemtl megatextures__mymap" - it didn't work.

I changed it to "usemtl megatextures/mymap" as well - no luck.

Export as ASE was a piece of cake once I remembered to install python so Goofus's script would run. :p

Do not change the "mtllib" line at all! it does nothing. and you can safely delete the extra .mtl file that the .obj exporter creates, it will never be used.
there is an additional line starting with "usemtl" which you have to change (e.g. usemtl megatextures__refinery) .. use search function in wordpad (just look for "usemtl"), it's somewhere in the middle of the obj text (not in the beginning like the "mtllib" line)

Planet Quake has mapping forums and a file submission system that works great for multiple beta builds. Also, anyone looking for hosting for their mapping or modding sites can contact me directly for a quicker route to getting approval.

Not a tutorial, but I though this was a nice little collection of 10 texturing tips.
Good things to consider when making your own custom textures.

A quick easy and free program to create human models
export to obj and open with blender or,,,,???

http://www.makehuman.org/blog/index.php

it creates quad mesh's (body, head, eyes, eyelash, teeth and tongue) that when converted to tris is about 18000 faces.

retopo would be necessary but could help in many ways

I found it very straight forward and put this model (pic) into blender within 1 hr. of dloading.

Fig leaves added for Dirka_Dirka's protection. ;)

thanks for the info gunslinger.

i havent tested it yet, but it seems like a good help to start your models on. on the downside i fear that your own modeling skills might suffer if you don't build yourself.
and some models and poses didn't seem 100% natural either.

Looks like a nice program, if that took you only 10 mins :)

And thanks Marmil, it made me feel slightly uncomfortable.

The poses are 100% adjustable. The programs way of posing is not a very quick way though but in blender you can easily switch to edit mode, select verts and rotate a portion in seconds.
As for modeling skills, it is for those who lack them.

picture removed.

any chance of getting the links for the objective maps in this post (http://community.enemyterritory.com/forums/showthread.php?t=27895) linked here. you have the post linked, but its a pain having to go 3 links deep to find em.

Hiya

Just a little note to say I've just finished setting up the Mappers' DataBase. The aim of the database is to gather all ressources available on different games to help other map makers. This database will host prefabs, textures, shaders, models... We've almost got 100 items in the database (mainly wolfenstien enemy territory maps / prefabs at the moment and a few for Soldier of Fortune 2) and would like all mappers willing to share their work to do so.

Visit The Mapper's Database (http://www.gd-experience.eu/index.php?section=2&category=6)

Thanks for your contribution
