In my previous modding time, especially the quake4 time, I noticed that most of the time, mods are doing many things multiple times,
for example in quake4 there where brightskins and weapon skins. there where a couple of mods doing it differently, instead of sharing resources.

In these days, I had the idea of creating a project that collects resources (models, skins, sounds, code snippets, and other stuff) which can be used freely by any mod that needs it instead of loosing time by reinventing the wheel over and over again.

Mappers, Modelers, gfx artists and other creative guys could create resources without having to join a mod team.
I often saw ppl who where interested in doing a couple of things, but they didn't have time to join a mod team.
So this platform could be used to make those creations more popular and commonly used.

it could also be used to find artists to do several things a mod needs.
for example a mod team needs a small model, but can't find a modeler for it.
it could just ask someone in the project to do this model.

Sadly, my idea was introduced a little late and nobody was interested in joining it..
But I think in etqw, we could start this project from the beginning and create a big resource platform for free use.

My upcomming etqw mod will be contributing to this, and I hope you guys see the value in this and join with your mod too.

So what do you think ?

I really like that idea. I already thinked about it. But I am not sure about a fusion. I have to talk with my mates. Will you fix this project to id Tech Games? I already tested some domains about this topic, this is not risk to post these domains here, because I will get this domains faster than most of you guys!

Been down this road before, and all the political issues, problems with people partly who wholly copying other peoples works will doom the idea. It's nice to think that it will work, but history is evidence that it just doesn't.

you can never avoid people stealing your work.
But if we set up a good license the user has to agree with before downloading, then we should be on the safe side.
The modeling site Polycount did work very well imho, until ppl forgot about it.

I can see the benefits, but wheel reinventing has to go on, not every one is good at 3D &/or 2D work, not every e.g. 3d/2d etc part will sute the ethos of a mod without change or not have errors or extraneous details, you then run into problems of standardisation, e.g. "most" people use 2D layered images to produce there textures, some people seldom go near a 2D application as they do all there 2D work in there 3D application, you then also have the plagiarism part as always, etc, etc, etc.

Could paypal be used as a method of verification of the users address by using small transaction to obtain passwords to enable a download of an item thus the legal acceptance of any user agreement for that particular item?

interesting idea.
a very small fee could even help pay the server traffic without having to use advertising.
but isn't there a minimum you need to pay on paypal ?

anyway, I don't think I would like paypal. it seems to me like fileplanet subscribing, even if it was only 0.10$, I would not pay for it.

Sharing bugfixes, assets and miscellaneous code is always a good thing. Trying to go further and make One Modgroup to Rule Them All isn't likely to succeed IMO.

If you only release what you don't mind sharing in the first place "stealing" is a non-issue.

I also think this is a good idea. I remember for Doom3 there was like 5 different flashlight mods that each had its own qualities. If they would have collaborated, it could a have been a bit better/more polished and less confusing for the end-user as to which mod he/she should get.
Also sometimes mods can conflict with each other, making it hard to combine them.
