View Full Version : Tactical Shield Guide

Today on an empty server, while I was testing my graphics to get the best FPS without sacrificing graphics too much, my buddy JiggaJigga whom you all should know joined up. After doing Death Races, I spoke about how putting two tactical shields together to make a full circle can protect from a hammer or dark matter cannon blast (DMCB). This intrigued him to test it out, and I had only read about it so I wanted to try it too. As we did, another player joined by the name of {dc.|t3nkuu.

What it turned out to be was a session of testing the Strogg Oppressor's Tactical Shield, and see what the best tips and tricks are for it. This made me want to make a guide to share our findings with all of you. So here goes, my Tactical Shield Guide (TSG).

*NOTE: The Shields were standard and were not the Improved Tactical Shields that a Level 2 Oppressor has, so the Improved Tactical Shield may have a different affect on protecting yourself than described below.*

Tactical Shield Guide

Hammer and Dark Matter Cannon Blast: The Tactical Shield (TS) can protect against both the Hammer missile and the DMCB. All you have to do is when you see a Hammer coming your direction, or a misfired DMCB (or perhaps a player TeamKilling and being a n00b :P) coming your way, and you're lucky enough to be an Oppressor (one of these fellows: :oppressor:), whip out your Tactical Shield Generator. Fire a shield. When you do, move to the other side to fire another shield so it faces the opposite direction, making a full circle. Step inside and invite any strogg teammates in as well (as many that can fit in) to protect them from the explosion (if any sneaky GDF try to get in, don't try shooting them, because you'll more than likely bring down one of the shields. If they do get inside, don't shoot or you could kill a teammate. Just stand next to the GDF and press 'g,' which "pushes" the player, and you can do that until the explosion. Luckily when it explodes he will be outside the shield and be killed). When the Hammer/DMCB explodes, the shields will be destroyed however everyone who was completely inside will be 100% unharmed.

Double Hammer/Double DMCB or More: You could be so unlucky that two or more Hammers/DCMB's could be coming right at you. The first projectile will destroy both shields, and the second will kill you and your teammates hiding within (because the chances of both hitting at the same exact time is highly unlikely). If two projectiles are coming, tell any other Oppressor's by you to shoot their two shields to fortify your shields. The more shields the better. If you make a full circle of shields on another, most likely you will survive both explosions. If you're so unlucky that 3 projectiles are coming at you, well, 6 total shields might be hard to get at the time, so you might be screwed. But hey, you could get lucky and have a few Oppressor's by you (and maybe they'll actually listen and deploy their shields instead of being nubs :P).

GDF Field Ops Airstrike: This one took a little testing, but we got it. A minimum of 4 Tactical Shields is needed to protect against the GDF Field Ops Airstrike (that means two full circles). However, more than 4 shields is recommended, because 4 shields might not always work. Also, if you want to stop the airstrike completely, place a Tactical Shield over an airstrike canister before the plane comes to drop the bombs, and the airstrike will be canceled.

Strogg Orbital Strike: Yes, sometimes people make mistakes, and that means a misplaced Orbital Strike beacon. You could run, and that's the best idea. Actually, it's really your only idea, because the Tactical Shield isn't going to help as the Orbital Strike continually causes damage until it is gone, and it will go right through your shields to you. So, if your teammate misplaces a beacon, just run, don't try the shields, because if you do, you'll find yourself TKed :).

Artillery/Rocket Artillery/Rail Howitzer/Plasma Mortar: These deployables fire more than one projectile, as you well know, which is why the Tactical Shields won't help against them. If you have other Oppressor's around you, you could try setting up a lot of shields, but it would be better to try and run.

Grenades: One grenade is all that is needed to destroy any Tactical Shields within it's most effective splash damage range (one shield may only be destroyed but it is very possible and common for two or more to be destroyed from the one grenade). Be wary if you see a grenade by your shield.

Bullets: Pretty much any fire from a players weapon, an APT, a mounted MG, etc. can destroy a shield. The Assault Rifle/Lacerator will take longer, but a bigger weapon will destroy it faster. Be wary.

Missiles: A projectile from a tank, the Cyclops, the Desecrator, a Rocket Launcher, etc. will destroy a shield with one shot (if it's dead on) but you will be protected. After that you may have enough time to get to cover or run away while they reload.

Other Uses for the Tactical Shield:

Vehicles: You can put a Tactical Shield on any vehicle, adding protection. However if the shield blocks the vehicles weapons, the weapon will shoot the shield and destroy it, and the splash damage will probably hurt your vehicle, so be careful where you place it.

Some of the best vehicles to put Tactical Shields on are the Icarus and the Husky. These are so small that you can put a full circle on them and have them 100% protected. Why you would put it on a Husky, I don't know, but the Icarus is a good idea if you're not planning on shooting Stroybombs. Something interesting is if you're in your Icarus or Husky and you have a full circle of Tactical Shields, and a Hammer missile or DMCB explodes near or on you, the shields will be destroyed but you and your vehicle will remain 100% fine (unless, of course, you place the shields wrong and there is a gap).

Actually, if you put a full circle on your Icarus and a Hammer missile is coming down towards your team, you could actually save their skins if you aim it just right so you boost yourself high up and the Hammer hits you, destroying your shields but protecting you. If you were high enough up (which really doesn't have to be that high), you could actually save your team if you do not have an Artillery Interceptor Turret up (I do not recommend this however because A) It's pretty difficult and B) You might not always live =D).

Deployables: This is only a good idea if the deployable is disabled and/or you are protecting it from complete destruction, because the shields will not allow the deployable to fire if it is an offensive deployable or any deployable that shoots (I'm not 100% sure on this, we tested it only on GDF deployables but I think it will have the same effect on a Strogg deployable). Nonetheless it will provide great protection. Also, along with deployables being stopped, a base defense turret will also be stopped when a Tactical Shield is placed over it.

Other Various Tips:

-Use the Tactical Shield to provide cover for a Technician to revive one or more unconscious teammates who are in places where the Technician could be shot and killed.
-If being shot at from a sniper, create a full circle of shields. This will provide cover and hopefully give you enough time to find the sniper and get to an appropriate hiding spot, until the shields are destroyed from the sniper's rifle (usually about 3+ shots, depends on how far away he is) or until they simply shut down.
-If there is a doorway where GDF are trying to come through, like in the main room in the Sewer facility, put your Tactical Shield(s) down to block the entrance, so that they may not sit back and shoot you and your team and rush in.
-Don't hog your shield! Allow other teammates to use your shields for protection. There's always room for one more :)
-Fortify a shield by putting another shield right on or in front of it, because one Tactical Shield will actually protect another Tactical Shield.
-Strogg can't shoot through their own Shields, so if you want protection but also want to shoot, stand by the edge of the Shield and press Q or E to lean out and fire, then let go of Q or E to straighten back up and back into the shield. Very useful.
-Making a wall of shields is a good tactic.
-Don't put the shield anywhere where a GDF can use it for his own use.

I hope some of you can get some useful tips for the Tactical Shield next time you play as Oppressor from this guide. If you have any other tips or tricks you know of, post them here on this thread, and if it's okay with you I will add it to my guide.

Thanks to JiggaJigga and {dc.|t3nkuu for a good time today and also a good experiment.

just curious, but have you tried to put shield on strogg artilery interceptor turret? because it may not actually shot projectiles.

How about using the tactical shield at the rear base spawn to protect Hog and Mech from the Titan tank whore who camps up on hillside overlooking that area and shoots down at mech and hog and Strogg there?

I'll have to see if I can throw some up on the crates there. ;)

When the explosives are set on the sewer grates set some shields up around it so when a constructor goes to disarm them he isnt shot in the back.

Its great when the oppressor does this...makes it so much easier.

Tried firing a sheild just as a armadillo is trying to ram you? That causes the armadillo to go over the sheild and overturn right? gotta try that again to confirm

you cant put a shield on an icarus, i have tried it but it will just fall off.
also the shield wont let the APT fire at you.
good info btw.

How does the shield work on an enemy deployable, eg. will placing it in front of an enemy AVT stop it from firing at your precious vehicles?

Really cool guide, thanks for posting. I play Covey a lot but don't use most of these ideas, but I will now! One of the coolest uses of the Tac shield that I've seen, is someone who had gotten up on top of a ledge on one of the side walls in the Sewer Controls room, and shot it against the wall creating a full half-circle around him. Nice defensive position.

Can't wait to go home and try some new tactics. Damn work >:S

Wow..nice guide...And how the hell did you found that push "g" key... Now i will be able to sneak behind those damn snipers, and push them downhill...lol

Thanks. I found out because with mods in W:ET if you pressed use on a character you could push them, just wanted to know if they had it in ET:QW, and they do instead you use g.

Lol@pushing snipers down the hill. I have to try that.

Weird...could have sworn it was possible. I think it is a bug because the shield is supposed to be able to deploy on anything.

Yeah, you shouldn't be able to put shields on the Icarus. We removed that after people did it a lot in playtesting and found that it kinda made the whole thing silly and overpowered.

I had a lot of fun with the tactical shield as an offensive weapon, very useful against the Titan, placed right on the very front (or back) of the tank the shield blocks the tank shell and in turn deals a hefty blow to the tank if he shoots.

much fun sneaking up to the tank too.

hey guys, I've done some testing on its effect on vehicles.

while I didn't manage to capture a flipping of an armadillo, these should show that it is indeed possible.

Perhaps this 'bug' could be enhanced so that it can actually be used against ramming vehicles?

With what was said here and in the new Dev Blog, I still don't see enough reasons to use the Oppressor position indoors. I'm the kind of pub player that likes to make underpowered classes look overpowered, but I still can't find my niche with the Oppressor. I'd still love to see a few more "weak" additions to the shield.

Very interesting! It seems to slow the vehicle down a bit and give you time to move out of the way. Also funny how you got the shield on the wheel of the aramadillo lol.

Stuffing around with the shield(dunno if this has been put in yet im short of timeto look) I found that if you put the shield half wayon the barrel of the titan the GDF cant actually shoot out of it.

It seems to me a little unfair that you can use the shields to protect against heavy artillery attacks, yet a grenade can destroy it.

yep. but it isn't as dramatic as the time when I flipped a Armadillo over twice. Unfortunately I didn't capture that...doubt I'll get to test it again.... the aussie server seems to have people playing now... unlike monday and tuesday.

Hey man,

Yeah, that was a sick day. Death racing is the best. Those were good tests, thanks for some of the credit in this post, hope we can do it again sometime.
o.O you were the one testing with me? Canadian?!

Heck yeah it was fun, heh. We should test something else sometime, then maybe we can write the guide together instead of one of us writing it then giving both the credit, you know?

How does the shield work on an enemy deployable, eg. will placing it in front of an enemy AVT stop it from firing at your precious vehicles?

If you attach it exactly onto the deployables weapon it wont shoot at all, easiest at AVT as it wont shoot you while trying^^

I had a lot of fun with the tactical shield as an offensive weapon, very useful against the Titan, placed right on the very front (or back) of the tank the shield blocks the tank shell and in turn deals a hefty blow to the tank if he shoots.

much fun sneaking up to the tank too.

As someone already posted: if you put the shield right on the front of the titan-headpart the titan needs to shoot the shield off with the minigun(also looking quite funny if you attache the shield to the minigun and let it rotate(try to build a ball and switch to any camera you like while rotating^^))

I;m surprised I didn;t see my favorite use of tact sheilds listed. I may have just overlooked it, but one of my favorite uses is blocking out enemy AVT"S and APT"s by blocking thier sensor with a shield. and APT or AVT with sheild over barrel and sensor won't fire effectively disabling it for a period of time (until sheild wears off or until an explosion goes off there, which likely disables turret anyway)

I've got a tip for the guide; I was playing on Volcano the other night (pub server) and I kept putting up a Strogg sheild in the main entryway to block the GDF GPMG; Unfortunately for some of the Strogg, they did not realize that weapons/nades don't fire Through* the sheild as they kept tryin to throw in nades only to blow themself up repeatedly.

"Whoops!" :D

Heh I just thought how funny it'd be to be able to place a shield on yourself or other player :-D That'd be overpowering, not placing a shield on poor Icarus.

Thinking yesterday about Tac Shield usage, something that may be fun, is to use it as grenade bouncers.
Example, Outskirts, last objective, Strogg defence on the data brain room, sitting on the ceilings overlooking the data brain. With 1 or even 2 shields carefully dropped on the ground, you could bounce grenade down into the corridor from where GDF guys are incoming without them being able to shoot or grenade you.
I don't know for grenades, but I was using that yesterday as Tech to bounce stroyent cells from the ceiling to defenders on the ground. Problem is that it's difficult to control where exactly the stroyent will end, but it's quite fun to do :)

Couldn't see it mentioned:

Agressors needing to plant on a Generator, throw 2 shields down to allow them the safe plant, get them to drop a nade as they exit, blows up the shields, and instead of the shields covering an enemy engineer whilst he disarms, he blows up inside and the shields go too =]

The one I haven't seen yet, or maybe overlooked. You can put a tactical shield on a vehicle in such a way that AVTs don't lock on because the shield is blocking this. This works especially good with hog rushes.

You can put tactical shields on a hog, but you must do this correctly, basically you have to put the shields in front of the hog. This gives the hog a few advantages:

No AVT will shoot as you as long as the hog is shielded.

You can survive one tank gun without the hog taking damage, provided the tank gun hits front of the hog. Good for hogging the tanks.

You can survive 2 rocket launcher hits without the shield going down, but the hog will take some damage.

The shield can also provide cover from flyers, i.e. LAW/rockets, but won't protect you forever.

you guys are forgetting a really important use ^^, place it on the firing thing of artillery, you can quickly turn a camp with a hammer in it to dust as the explosion of the hammer missle will a. destroy the deployable and b destroy things in the camp, but if you use it on for example the rocket artillery, it will disable itself with the rockets but won't be destroyed and won't do any damage to things near it

p.s. it won't give you the exp but it will give you an advantage in warfare, happy hunting.

Missiles: A projectile from a tank, the Cyclops, the Desecrator, a Rocket Launcher, etc. will destroy a shield with one shot (if it's dead on) but you will be protected. After that you may have enough time to get to cover or run away while they reload.

Not exactly, especially against rocket launchers. The shield protects against the direct hit of the rocket, but the splash damage will go through. Unless you're a fair distance away from your shield, 1 rocket from a rocket launcher vs an oppressor crouched in a shield = 1 dead oppressor.

Tac shields also trigger any mines, which can be good and bad depending on what side of the shield the mine was at :p

Wow nice guide thanks alot.

I prefer the more traditional approach.

When I'm Opressor, I use the TS to block off alternative routes.

On Refinery for example, alot of GDF players will come through the corridor nearest the Strogg main base rather than down the stairs. Dual TS keep it nade free and allow me to defend that route, whilst getting a good Violator or two out into the open.

Help your hackers/engineer soldiers!

Protect plasmacharges and protect ur teammate hacking, constructing or arming! I really appriciate an shield when I done of these things. Every little help is usefull at these objectives. it can make the difference between completing or dead (even losing the progress). So if you see someone arming, hacking, constructing or an armed plasma: Put a shield on it!

always bang a couple on the mining lasers, a bit doubtful about explosive plants though, I always imagine some pesky engie is waiting for some cover before disarming.

It's pretty neat to pop a couple in random spots, too, just as a distraction.

other than that, just behind corners etc. for the grenade rebounds.
