I'm too lazy to compile the list my self. So just post what you use and if you know of any tutorials. (keep the chatter down. Sorry if there's already a list)

www.blender.org - Free 3d modeling application.
www.milkshape3d.com - A very popular modeling application

http://earth.google.com
http://sketchup.google.com/product_suf.html

Tut sites -

Wings 3D is definitely worth a try, it's free too.
http://www.wings3d.com/

I expect a lot of this will be added to www.modwiki.net soon, it's a good resource too.

Modwiki is certainly a good reference, but it remains a wiki.
A lot of content is either based on iddevnet.com (www.iddevnet.com) or the nice Doom 3 world (http://www.doom3world.org/phpbb2/) forums.

@jonny_b: as you can see, there is no "1 site to rule them all". (Which is fine too) The good thing is that this site is around as a safety net, if there is something nobody knows at your local board, this place is still around. (The same applies for the SplashDamage forums (http://www.splashdamage.com/forums/))

sounds good to me :) I just got so many questions I dont know where to start or who to ask. At the same time i don't want to be repeatitive so thats why I always wonder about tutorials. :) The more experienced mappers/modders know who/where to look for the needed info. As someone once said "You too were a n00b once."

Bryce 5.5(terrain generator and 3d model program) is free now and it makes really great greyscale heightmaps... if anyone needs instructions on how to create a terrain in Bryce... let me know by pm or in the forums... I might make a quick picture tutorial... CB

This concerns texturing, which is part of 3d modelling. Nvidia tools page. I use the Photoshop plugins all the time to create normal maps easily, and lots of other goodies there :

On the subject of normal maps, here's another useful app: Crazybump.
http://www.crazybump.com/

Can generate much better normals from photos than the NVidia plugin for Photoshop, and is also good for blending two normal maps together without losing any detail.

Also for general help/tricks/places to look at game artwork, check out the Polycount forums - http://boards.polycount.net ... it's a resource that's been around since the Q2 modding days and has a ton of old-school modders who are often happy to answer any technical questions or give artwork some constructive critique. :)

Polycount is an amazing community with tons of great artists that will give you "nobull" critiques on whatever you may be doing. One of the members there runs a great site (although strange name) http://www.poopinmymouth.com his name is Ben Mathis great tutorials on character modeling, texturing and probobly the best write up i've ever found about normal mapping.

Yeah, Ben's a friend of mine, his site is awesome. He also mirrors it at www.mr-chompers.com if you're uncomfortable with using his "main" nickname (I know I am!)... He has full-length video tutorials on pretty much every aspect of character creation and 3d modelling for games, definitely bookmark it if you're at all interested in character modelling or game art in general.

Yeah, wow i'm glad that you that you have that mirror link...most of the guys that join our team are directed to poopinmymouth and well alot of them don't trust us that much so they never go. As MOP said if you REALLY want to learn how to character model and texture PROPERLY then read through this site. There is also some VERY interesting articles regarding the industry in general if you are interested in getting your foot in the door. Small world of the internet MOP I'm a big Ben Mathis fan.
