heh, thanks for pointing that out, easy fix. I always seem to have a spelling error on every video I do.

The biggest problem I have when flying is compensating for roll on the mouse. I'm more used to playing games where roll is bound to the keyboard and yaw to the mouse, but QW does it the other way around.

I notticed that also, but I have played some flight simmulators that have this same setup, one right off the top of my head is an oldie, LHX attack chopper, (Mid to late 80's game. Back when I had my Tandy 1000 HX PC.)

Perhaps I'm just weird, but I've always found it easier flying hover-type vehicles with a k+m setup (with the current ET:QW configuration). Perhaps it was my time flying the bass-ackwards gunships in BF 2142, or having to compensate for the ultra-touchy controls of the choppers in Project Reality (BF2).
Nice work on the video DreAdeDcoRpSE :) :infiltrator:

One thing I noticed is that you're only using Strocket, switch between Strocket and Plasma cannon to improve your firepower. Other than that flying is a lot about getting used to the controls, simply seeing how the aircraft reacts during different maneuvers can help you keep the bird in the air while bombarding the enemy below and avoiding incoming projectiles.
Also the Tormentor thread (http://community.enemyterritory.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5134) has some quite useful tips although not all of it is entirely true on Valley.

Yeah, Reason for not switching between the various types of rockets is cause I didnt know I could. :o But I did figure it out yesturday when I was flying around. For a while my main goal was to get flying down, but now I know I can change between weapons.
Thanks for the complements on the video, I was bored and I kept hearing from a bunch of my friends saying they cant fly very well. Actually 2 of my friends couldn't figure out how to go forward. So I decided to make this for them, thats why the title is the way it is, it was just a joke towards them.

You should make a video of how to fly both. They are pretty different IMO but very balanced.
Dogfighting to me is currently the funnest thing in the game. Rarely do I get a good fight where neither of us is being harassed by RL's/Obliterators and AVT's though.
Anansi is definitely faster and easier to hit and run with I'd say. It's balanced on Valley with that you need to shift and get out quickly without getting hit by Obliterators, AVT's or smashing into the Contaminator building or the many many poles around the generator. The Anansi's real strength lies in that IMO it is the single best deployable killer in the game. One LAW will disable a radar, one LAW+a full rocket barrage(everything hitting) will disable most other deployables. Something you can do in one pass at full speed if you don't wait for the lockon before firing then immediately switch to the rockets and fire them all off.
Tormentor is more maneuverable and I think it's easier to solo kill a Titan than it is to solo kill a Cyclops with Anansi. Tormentor is probably the better one for making a real nuisance of yourself, especially on Valley.
Both of them are extremely deadly and can easily turn the match in their sides favor with a skilled user. Dom's video is evidence of this.
I'd say flying either of them the thing you need to watch out for most is RL's/Obliterators. Within a certain range there's really no way to escape them.
That said. I prefer the Anansi, hands down.

nice vid.
i prefer tormentor because i started with it in sewers. it wasnt as agile back then but i got titans blown up and dodged their shots. thanks for reminding the tormentor thread, i made it back in the sewer days, but now ill add more hints as i have learned a couple f things, like how to successfully kill a titan with no problems(almost...).
also i kinda noticed you had no advanced controls, every time you turned your nose down etc the game started to move it back. everyone with an hour behind the tormentor/anasi should turn it on.
the anasi has much stronger reverse thrust, it almost works as an air brake. the anasi weapons have less splash damage, and the LAW reloads slower.
sometimes its sad to see someone hop in it and bail out when they reach the shield gen, they should take out deployables and some strogg before they do that.
DreAdeDcoRpSE

murka10, I do most of the time have advanced controls off for reasons that I seem to be able to manover in the sewer better with it on, yes, thats right, I fly right into the sewer with the bumblebee. So far out of everyone I know and everyone I have seen, Nobody has done that but me. I did it for reasons that the boat was gone, I had a full load, and to many AVT around. So I decided to give it a try and what you know, I barely fit. But I got me and 4 others to the other side, and up to the shiel generator to hack, even thou they died laughing that I did that. But I do use Advanced controls when my main objective will be to supply cover fire and try taking out the APT/AVT and the enemy.
One thing I do have to agree with you is the weapons do seem to load up slower and I don't like that much. :( Another thing I find is with the Anansi, I find locking onto the target is slower. I was in like a 3 min air to air battle, very intense. We actually collided a few times, hey if I cant shoot him, I will ram him. Well needless to say, we both sprinted away in opposite directions and we rotated for a death kill, I got around before he did and started to target, by time I had lock on him, he shot and hit me and that was on a lock, and NO, I was not sitting in one spot hovering, and neither was he. Thats the one major dislike about the air craft, the lock on area is way to small, especially for being "advanced" technologies, Hell, todays aircrafts don't have that small of a tracking area, but oh well.
Stncold, I agree with you on the AVT/RL's/Obliterators ruining good air to air battles, but I have to say over all performance, I prefer the strogg's Tormentor for if I am being chased my favorite thing is to lead them around towards the allies base then turn left towards the bridge/tunnel and go up and over the mountian, but once over then fly down towards the ground then attach to the mountian and allow the Anansi to fly over and take off and attack from behind. Hopefully when you did it you still have soem health left cause it does cause damage, and once you take out the Anansi, then get out and repair, if you picked that class.

This is what i am using in my autoece.cfg file, It has the controls that I am now using to fly, works for both GDF and Strogg flyer's. You just have to type in console before selecting a server "exec autoexec" without the " and ". If you use this then edit the tag section and the name section to your likings, its at the top in the "NAME PORTION".

What kinda changes does that config make in laymans terms?
DreAdeDcoRpSE

Nice video :)
What kinda changes does that config make in laymans terms?
Over all, it takes the basic flying config for the GDF and the Strogg flyer's, and makes things easier to use.
Example:
Standard Flight controls:
w - Power Up
s - Power Down
d - Rotate right
A - Rotate left
1 - Flairs
G - Bail out
F- Deploy parachute
Shift - Turbo Forward thrust
Ctrl - Reverse thrust
Mouse wheel Up or down - Change between weapons
Mouse 1 - Fire weapon
Mouse Left and Right movement is the Roll
Mouse Up and Down movement is the pitch
What my config does is make everything a little easier to control, making all the controls so your not bending your fingers backwards to pull of some things. Its more of a relaxed state that my config is set up.
My Flight Controls:
Space - Power up (use thumb for that)
E - Power down, (use mostly to land.)
W - Forward thrust
S - Reverse Thrust (Great for staying somewhat still and aiming down by lowering the pitch with mouse.)
D - Rotate right
A - Rotate left
1 - Flairs
G - bail out
F - Deploy Parachute
Mouse 2 - Switch weapons (Allot faster the mouse wheel)
Mouse 1 - Fire weapon
Mouse 4 - Free look (which allows you to aim at targets without moving the position of the aircraft. easier and faster lock-on's)
Mouse Left and Right movement is the Roll
Mouse Up and Down movement is the pitch
It makes it so your not stretching or bending your fingers backwards to pull off a reverse thrust maneuver with nose pitched down.
Well that is for the controls. The others is your clan tags. name, Binds in which like F9 - F12 control Stuff shown on your screen and Recording demos.
Others is graphic settings with minimal loss of FPS, There's stuff in there about your mouse saying how sensitive it will be to movement, meaning what could take about 6 inchs of movement of the mouse to the right to turn right may take 4 inches or 3, Just makes it so its a little more sensitive.
There is other coding in there that alters you FOV, (Field of View), which in best discription is giving your self a little more peripheral view on things by compressing it a little, I have it set not to much over standard but enough over to help a little.
Other's help eliminate the bobbing action of running and walking.
I hope this helps a little... There is others but I think I covered most of it.

n/p, thanks for the complement. I am currently gathering up demo's for a little more advanced flying which in the video I will show you and tell you how I do different maneuvers, I will be also showing a few tricks you can do with the different flyer's to give other more of an edge.
The was one battle I had yesterday, I think it had to be about 4 or 5 min air to air battle, I was in the Anansi and what ended the battle was me maneuvering over him and use reverse thrust and pitching the nose downward and fired a whole bunch of LAW missiles and rockets at the top of him. I just wish I was recording for that one cause there were some really tough maneuvers pulled off in that one. I will post a new thread once done also it will be posted on my clans website as soon as it is done.
Nice tips ;)
Thanks. More tips will come soon enough as stated above.

Haha thats insane, how did you manage to do that?
Use advanced flight controls. Head toward a far end of a map, pitch your nose up, and hit your 'boost' and 'up' keys. As you start to go past vertical, release the 'up' key, and press your 'down' key, that'll put some reverse thrust in effect to help keep you up. Don't go 100% inverted, you'll drop like a stone. Keep the nose up, and watch your altitude, you can find the balance point to keep you in level, partially inverted flight.

Very sleek video mate :) Wish i had found it when i were learning to fly, would have save me a lot of silly crashes :p
Anyway, don't forget about advanced flight controlls. Turning it off is ok, but just to learn how to fly them bloody things, shoot stuff and not crash [to often].
Toggle advanced controlls as soon as humanly possible, one can do some insane flying with it enabled.
I made a vid of flying on the day i switched to adv.controlls, makes a world of difference:

What exactly does the free aim do? I hold caps lock and it allows me to look left and right without moving the vehicle ... don't really see the use when you can just rotate on the spot anyway.
Maybe I'm missing something?
Herbert_West
10-02-2007, 11:42 PM
Instead of controlling your vehicle with the mouse you controll your aim in a small cone, about 15 degrees in every direction. Usefull while sniping from beyond the range of deployables and locking on, but hovering right above a battle and not using your mouse for manouvering is the best and the least spectacular way to get yourself killed :p

Free aim also helps when you are in an air to air battle, like I have min binded to mouse4 and when I am manovering all around allot of times its a pain to keep steady so I go freelook and it allows me to target them while they are still trying to level off and aim at me.

The flying in QW is fairly similar to the helicopters in BF2.
Forward and backpedal keys are simply thrust. Which means, if you keep level, it only moves the aircraft up and down. Once you move mouse and tilt nose forward, you start moving forward.
However, using the sprint key is the real forward thrust which gets you going, and the key that should be used as your main forward thrust.
The rotation on strafe keys is the same as the helicopter rotation in BF2.
Put simply, if you want to turn right, use the strafe key. And if you want to bank right to improve the turn rate you also need to hit forward to increase thrust (which "drags" you into the turn).
It's all really basic helicopter dynamics with an added forward thrust.
Forward/backpedal - Rotor thrust increase/decrease (up / down when level)
Strafe keys - Pedal controls - rotate left/right
Mouse - Rotor tilts - tilt forward/back/bank
Sprint - forward thrust (e.g. Airwolf)

i have a question tho, what is the console command for bailing out and the parachute? G and H on my keyboard are bound to other things...also is dropping flares just the same command as selecting weapon slot 1 directly?

Dogfighting is easier if you fight around your AVT :P j/k. Cool vid, hehe I'd like to say I actually did watch it when I was learning to fly.
In your advanced flight vid, you should put in a section about saving yourself when you're upside down on the ground. Unless you're flipped on completely flat ground, you can get back up in the air pretty easily.
I'm personally better in the anansi, but if you need someone to be a moving target for either flyer, I'd be happy to be a clay pigeon.

Other then that, I have no idea what it would be. I tried getting the list of binds along but the list I keep getting is the list of stuff I already have, not the list for vehicles.

In your advanced flight vid, you should put in a section about saving yourself when you're upside down on the ground. Unless you're flipped on completely flat ground, you can get back up in the air pretty easily.
I'm personally better in the anansi, but if you need someone to be a moving target for either flyer, I'd be happy to be a clay pigeon.
well getting back up is mostly just rolling to what ever way the ground goes downward. As for more dogfighting video's, I may take you up on that cause I am realizing, there is not many tricks you can do in the tormentor, and everything you can do in there you can do in the Anansi. I am leaving in a few hours to drive up to Maine, 8 hour drive, to deliver a new PC i built for my grandmother, so when i get back, I will give ya a holler and try setting up a date and a time so I can try getting more demos in.

I''d like to configure my controls to match Yours. However, when I go to the Opitions, Movement, Vehicles cfg menu I only have 4 items listed there and none are movement controls. I want to know where You (in what menu) made Your changer to?. Thanks
P.S. Once I played BF2 just before QWET and I was getting some very good right, left, up and down movement from my Logitech Extreme 3D Pro joystick. The only thing was that the throtle control gave me a contstant up scrolling cursor. I could not select things with the mouse very well.

if you want more of an explication of what the stuff in this config is then check out http://community.enemyterritory.com/forums/showpost.php?p=145321&postcount=20
other then then that, I do have the config already in a text file for download,
You just need to follow what the readme file in the zip tells you to do to fine tune it for your self and it also tells you where to put the autoexec.cfg file.
You can download it at my website, http://www.headshotdomain.com
You will need to register unfortunately.
But if you feel like coping what I have there and making your own autoexec.cfg file then follow the instructions found on the link below and copy and paste the coding above into the cfg file you create.

ohh wait i realize now, bailing out is the same as exiting a vehicle which is the same key used to enter the vehicle in the first place....
you know, i wish that if you are falling down, and you hold down the 'enter vehicle' key you will deploy your parachute....like the less keys we have to deal with, and the more things that each key does within context, the better...the same with the 'reload' key when in vehicles, goes completely unused and could have better been used for stuff like firing flares....

yeup, I also wanted to tell you that you know you can also deploy parachute if you jump off a high cliff so you don't die from the fall, its the same thing as if you just bailed out of the Anansi or the tormentor. Another thing for people just reading, your better off pressing the deploy button a few times till it opens, just to be on the safe side cause it will only deploy after falling a certain distance.

On your new binds for flight control (i.e. W for Sprint and S for Speed) Does that only change the controls for flight? So W is still forward on foot or vehics and shift is still sprint?

Yes, it only alters the Anansi and the Tormentor's controls, nothing else...

hmm, what else can you change about the flight controls or in fact any other vehicle's controls? like the flare for example
btw ive just figured out how to deply the parachute yay
but i need the command for the flare... bind "x" "_weapon0" "" "vehicle" doesnt work, it seems that there is a specific 'flare' command which is different from simply selecting the first weapon? or is there?
ive taken abit of your code and changed it for myself, but it doesnt do anything:
g_bind_context_anansi "flyer"
g_bind_context_hornet "flyer"
bind "MOUSE4" "_tophat" "" "flyer"
bind "f" "_back" "" "flyer"
bind "r" "_forward" "" "flyer"
bind "uparrow" "_sprint" "" "flyer"
bind "downarrow" "_speed" "" "flyer"
bind "MOUSE5" "_weapon0" "" "flyer"
ive literally pasted that at the end of my own autoexec.cfg... whats wrong? like pressing the 4th and 5th mouse buttons dont fire flares or turn on freelook...
::edit:: oops i forgot to type exec autoexec.cfg in my console... i'll try it now

You shouldent have to type in exec autoexec. You are probally saving the autoexec file to the wrong folder.
You should be saving it to your /My Documents/idsoftware/Enemy Territory Quake Wars/sdnet/[player name]/base folder
I am just looking over your new settings, you have the up arrow and down arrow for upward thrust and downward thrust. That is a stretch for pulling off manovers. You will see what I am talking about in my next video that is about 70% done.

actually its the up arrow for forwards thrust , and back arrow for the brake...
the reason for this is because i couldnt be bothered to install some drivers, hence i end up with a generic keyboard-like usb HID
http://www.kustompcs.co.uk/acatalog/4706.jpg
now, pressing the keys i normally use to jump and duck would make the anansi or hornet go up and down, and forwards literally means forwards unlike the default 'collective (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helicopter_flight_controls#Collective)' control scheme...by default the mouse simulates the 'cyclic' pitch of a helicopter and the strafe keys simulate the 'torque paddle' or 'rudder', but i would have set the mouse X axis to replace the strafe keys at the rudder if i could help it, that way it is much closer to noclip ... i would use the strafe keys to roll side to side i.e. 'aileron (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aileron)' , seeing that the rolling is all slow and unresponsive to the mouse anyway, so its going to be easier to pilot it if the aileron control was full on or off...
im looking for such a script that modifies the flight controls as well, but all ive seen so far is that its just impossible...

Well i put this config in my game and i cannot play know how do i reverse these changes!! you should've used [set] instead of [seta] using set makes if for that session only, seta makes permanant!! beware!! others if you don't like his settings you'll be in my boat trying to figure out how to undo this!
prolly fastest way is too reinstall game!!
All the answers are right there, what are you trying to change, there is a ton of different things in that. If you dont like the FOV (aka Field Of View) I have it set at 110, but if you dont like that then go to 100, or 95. But the answers are already there. Simple put, read the notations to the right of everything. Everything to the right of the command is what each thing does for you to know so you can set it up for your personal use.
If its the controls you don't like. then alter the keys in the config to match the configuration that you feel most comfortable playing with. This is just a config that I wrote up to make it more comfortable to play with which I am happy to say has been downloaded form my site a little over 200 times and I have had lot's complements on, the only complaint is that it takes time getting used to, but thats with everything. But since I did this config and started using it. I have been told that "You being in a flyer makes me want to leave, it's just too hard to kill you", and it was because of this config making it easier to fly.
The ones that don't have any writing to the right was left out purposely, most of them, them selves, are self explanatory. But if there is something you don't like then PM me on what is the part you don't like and I will edit it for you, but I am almost guaranteeing it that it's the FOV that you don't like, I believe that original setting is 95, well 95 - 100. And yes, I have customized this config for others to fit there needs. :oppressor:
