LOS ANGELES, California (Hollywood Reporter) -- The Terminator is coming back.

A nascent film company has acquired the franchise rights to the popular movie series from producers Mario Kassar and Andrew Vajna, intending to make a new trilogy. The deal is said to be in the tens of millions of dollars.

The Halcyon Co. -- a privately financed firm -- plans to begin immediate preproduction on "Terminator 4," with hopes that it will be ready for release in the first half of 2009.

The script, by John Brancato and Michael Ferris, was part of the transaction. No distributor is on board, or any talent.

Halcyon -- headed by advertising veteran Derek Anderson and "Cook-Off!" producer Victor Kubicek -- pursued the "Terminator" rights aggressively for several months, knowing that the series is one of the few recognizable properties out there not in the hands of a major studio. Halcyon also is concentrating on a merchandising and licensing push for the property.

The rights to "Terminator" have changed hands several times.

Kassar acted as an executive producer for 1991's "Terminator 2: Judgment Day," and he and Vajna acquired interests from Gale Anne Hurd -- who produced the first one in 1984 and executive produced the second -- when the duo made 2003's "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines."

2112 - Hmmm not sure this is a good move. I love the first three no doubt. But worry it will become the next Aliens franchise which lost its appeal after they ruined it with Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection. Any rate lets hope it stays fresh. Aliens vs. Predator 2 looks good for anyone who has been following the production of it.

Is Arnold going to be in it?

No word as of yet. I some how doubt honestly as he is to busy being the Governator for Cali right now. I could be wrong but I really have some doubts if this is will be a quality project. Kinda reminds me of the Rambo series which in my opinion should have been left right where it ended. Granted I love the first three and though I would share this news story with you all.

hopefully they dont put him on the new movies and they need a fresh script if they want to resurrect the movie.

This new Terminator should be all out action in the future, because thats where the third movie left off.

That's what the 3rd movie should have been in the first place, instead of just 'Terminator Again'. Anyway, I hear Cameron is making a CG Battle Angel Alita movie, which will be totally sweet - so screw any new Terminators, especially with no Arnie and new directors.

The money sucking machine is winding up... Terminator 3 was just a start - expect more cheesy plot twists, slap stick humour and what's next? a talkative and annoying sidekick with unclear sexual orientation?

The Terminator (the first movie) is by far the best in the trilogy. The second one is good, and the third is a bit crap. I have no hope for the fourth.

I honestly don't see much hope in it without James Cameron or Ahnold.

After watching Terminator 3 I thought it was obvious that they would milk out the franchise further. I really do not have any high hopes for it, but who knows, I might get surprised.

Wouldn't Ahnold be to busy being the Govenah/Govenator, to film a movie? Unless I'm behind, his term isn't up for 2 years. Amirite?
