I'm interested to see what you server admin's hardware is like as I seem to be having a little trouble with mine.
If your spec is not listed then please post it.
Cheers
Currently running on a 2.8 Ghz + 1gig + of ram mostly due to the fact it was the first free computer I can find. I don't seem to have any issues running a server on it.

Currious why you went with the Raptor drives instead of SCSI?

Price and space. Performance is about the same from what I read.

hi guys,
what would you say is a sufficient specification for a dedicated server running QW with max clients? today we have a P4-3.2 (prescott) with 2GB RAM, and it's running Battlefield 2 with 40 clients (~80%).
we are looking for an optimized system in order to run QW.
all answers greatly appreciated (!)

My initial finding is that QW doesnt need a hell of a lot of CPU and memory...runs a lot better than CS:Source (like that's difficult :p)
My spec is:
HP Proliant G3
Dual 2.4ghz Xeons, 2 Gig Ram, 10k Scsi Mirrored, 100mbit Line.
hyperthreaded.
I whacked a 32 man server on and loaded it with bots to check the max CPU/memory load, and it cruised along fine...seemed to take about up to 25% cpu and aroun 150mb ram. No cpu lag you normally get when CPU is struggling.
The server is also running a cs source sever, teamspeak and a few other things and nothing is bothered by qw being on there now.
Also doesnt seem to mind hyperthreading and spreads itself out quite nicely.
I think if have a half decent CPU and enough memory, it will run OK. I think disk speed and access will prob come into it as it has to load a lot of files when the map changes and you may get problems here if you have older disks, but I woudl hazard a guess than any half modern PC / server will handle this game fine.
I am talking of dedicated server running on a proper server in a datacenter on a good internet POP here..
.if you are lookign at running a listen server on a LAN or over DSL etc, then you may run into other issues.

I have dual Xeons (2.66) (that's 4 cores) + 2Gb RAM on a 100Mb port. It's running a public 24-slot server and a private 16-slot server. Doesn't get even remotely stressed when both are in use and full. I think I could stick another 24-slot public on it, probably.

yeh...thats what I found too..I am impressed with how slick it runs server side..especially compared to the dog that is cs:source.
Your 2.66 Dual xeons though.... I assume this is hyperthreaded, which isnt actually 4 cores, but 2 cores split, to give 4 virtual cores. It's not the same as quad core obviously.
Hyperthreading is ok if the apps use it..but for gameservers, with hindsight, its not a good idea. Quake wars seems to work it out ok..but many others dont..and they end up limited to one virtual core which is mqaxed at around 25% cpu.
I need to turn mine off..but its tough finding time to get up to the datacentre...and the dog that is cs:source just about runs within 25% limit with 18 players :p

No idea, it's a rented box and I'm not that technically minded. They show as 4 CPUs in Windows Task Manager and none of them are doing much with 2 servers running, which is all I care about ;)

sounds baout right..as you said..dual xeons, hyperthreaded...

Iam going to config the client tonite. WIll be running on
a8n premium
a64 x24400+ @2.6ghz
2GB pc3200
non raid
16 player 2MB upload/cable
should be enough, i run a fear server from time to time with zero lag, for stateside players.
my gaming rig is a quad@3.7ghz, 4gb of ram :p But i dont like to keep it up 24.7, its mainly for gaming, and when i fiddle around in maya
looking forward to the linux game/server client, want to run the client on fedora. any timeframe when we can expect a linux client?
Dual Xeon 3.2ghz ( ht enabled )
2 gig's ram ( ecc reg. )
2 x 73 gb scsi hd's
windows 2k3
3 instances running the Demo lite server...
each server spiking as high as 25% cpu usage with anything more than 10 players of 32 available slots...
Memory usage is about 160,000K per instance..

has anyone else noticed the server will peak at 25% on quad cpu or "Dual cpu with hyperthreading."
ie 25% is 1 cpu instance...
but it actually seems to balance over the cpu..unlike CS:Source...which doesnt
