View Full Version : Why my internet services????

why the hell was my internet services selected for ranked servers. No one plays on them because they are laggier than hell. Who is the genius who selected them? Whomever did should be sent through the flogging machine. I mean does anyone ever play on any of the my internet services servers? I have tried a few times, all I get is horrible lag. Sad thing is the unranked servers not affiliated with my internet or hypernia are a lot better. As well as the european servers, I lag less to them even though I ping higher.
Can SD please address this issue, perhaps make my internet services improve their servers or take away their ranking.
I have found that some of the ranked server hosts are laggy but not all. I guess cause they are loading more servers on one computer than the computer can handle and add in the fact that the beta server code is buggy and crashes doesn't help.

Are MyInternet restarting their servers regularly (like Rackage and i3D, the Euro hosts, are doing)?
I have a 16-slot and 24-slot server running on a dedicated box, and I'm restarting them nearly every day, as they're eating up ~100Mb extra RAM per day if left unattended, and I've noticed lag creeping in if left running for more than 2-3 days without restarting.

I just don't understand why they wouldn't spread the ranked servers out over like 10 different american companies, over europe as well. I really hope when the game is released that people will be able to go with whichever server they want and apply for ranked status.
Yes I restart my servers everyday as well but then again I kinda have too as it crashes on me after about 24 hours.
My guess when the game is live there will be more ranked server hosting companies. Its just the select few for the betas which would make since to me. Lets just hope they fix the memory leak and crashing.

Many larger hosting sites are not be interested in running the Beta. They would rather integrate the game into their system only once when it goes retail.

I agree, i dont think myinternetservices is restarting there boxes. If they are, then there obviously overloading the servers with more instances of the game that can they can handle.

my suggestion is that everyone just get over Ranked server nonsense.
It didnt work for BF2, and ended up contributing to the nubbishness and poor play that became rife on ranked public servers.
Paying for the privilege of stats padding just meant that clan servers that DID rent ranked servers pretty much only rented the slots they wanted.
end result? lots of ranked public servers with laggy play and no admins and lots of "smacktards" running rife with no real overall point. BF2 was a great game and a logical upgrade from 1942:desertcombat, but the ranking was the one big glaring major flaw int he whole system, because..put simply...it bypassed the importance of independently hosted, managed and looked after servers.
HOWEVER: the key with BF2 was the weapon upgrades... the stats became a non-interest after the initial novelty wore off..however, with EA deteterministic approach to narfing any independent support of the game in order for them to pimp upgrade pack after upgrade pack for additional cost, and increasingly less benefit, just meant that a lot of good players gave up on this game. ETQW doesnt rely on this...so I think very quickly the stats will wear off.
Like CS and other games, the best way for these stats is on local community servers, then you rate yourself against your peers and it actually means something. Very few people will give a flying (insert sexual position here) how they are ranked against some 11 yr old korean child with his own computing cluster in his bedroom and who plays 25 hours a day!!!!
With a lack of community support, including servers, and more importantly admins and clans to manage and nurture server communities, online gaming is just a frustrating and basically lonely experience.
I dont think rankings will count for much compared to BF2, if anyone values thier gameplay at all.

Bottom line is money. Ironically, the goal of 2 prodivers was to ensure quality, but instead you get a dualopoly that don't compete, and the consumers get a subpar product.

I think with BF2 it was money.
With QuakeWars I dont think it is, as far as I know, id/SD dont charge GSP's for the licence, and the GSP's should not be charging more for ranked over unranked, going by what I have read anyway.
True that it is a monopoly of a small number of providers who will make money out of it as a direct result of not having to compete. Though its up to the mugs who rent the servers to check out the reputation of providers and only go to the best..that way they have to keep up and compete financially and performance wise.
However, they felt that the global statistics would be a good thing, and the only way to do that is to have authorised servers, otherwise any old server could upload barfed stats and there really would be no point.
I personally disagree. I dont see any points in global stats for previous mentioned reasons, mainly they dont mean anything, and it actually doesnt work simply because different servers have different skill levels and maps. Viewed as bit of fun, it still means nothing..(ooo I have 10 more points than "SomeRandomGuyIDontEvenKnow!"
Stats comes into a bit of fun and meaning only really when you know who you are ranked against IMO. So as long as they dont go totally stupid and doing an EA "oo someone hacked our text files!", then IM quite happy with an unranked server and local stats or none at all.
Imn too old for that juvenile shinola tbh. :p

although the first link is sufficient.
Personally I don't know why this company doesn't make a statement explaining this because in stressing their servers they haven't made a very good name for themselves with the beta testers.

From the impression I get ..they are a web hosting company?! Am I missing something?
In the statement, they claim they are deliberately overloading the server in beta stage in order to make sure they know the limits for when it goes live!?!
In that case, I would say the have pretty much failed then, as the servers appear to have been consistently and reliably low performers.
Running servers with BOTS, does not stress test a multiplayer server, as anyone semi experienced with managing game servers knows. Its a totally different load to a "IRL" human loaded server (thought id seperate IRL humans with Ingame Humans as opposed to strogg...as I had this conversation with my 5 yr old at the weekend.... :p ).
BOTS generally use more CPU (and Memory sometimes) ,as the server is doing the thinking for them...but there is no network bandwidth other than updating any human players (irl ones).
With real players, its the other way round... less CPU (other than processing whatever they are doing) and obviously more net use.
I am glad to say that my server runs a full 24 man ETQW server with humans and bots mixed quite sweetly tbh, and thats runnign on top of a full 20 man CS:Source server teamspeak, fps booster.and a few other random things
It just illustrates how bad Source servers are in terms of resource use..ETQW runs a dream on my rig anyway (dual 2.4ghz , 2gig ram, mirrored scsi 10k, )

Small point...but ..
...the demo only came out today,
...id made the engine
....activision published the game
... splash damage developed the game...give them SOME credit :p

sad thing is my gaming community got a my internet services server, only other option in the price range was art of war central, and they screwed us with our cs:s server badly, changed our ip address 3 different times which killed our community. the server we have isnt too bad, I have played on worse servers hosted by other companies since the release.

we go with gameservers.com for our ranked server. their technical support is quick and helpful, and we haven't had any probs whatsoever other than a crash once a day or two. all that has helped us stay full 24/7.

btw poseidon, our server is/was ranked higher than yours, we had the most popular server in the US before the patch was released and our server started crashing two times an hour.

hmm, talk about "my server is better than your server". a bit childish if u ask me...
anyway, sounds like many of the servers running linux are working properly now. hopefully everyone will be able to fill their servers up with this fixed. ;)
