View Full Version : Important: ATI Users Need Catalyst 7.9 or later

All ATI users must download and install the latest Catalyst drivers (7.9 or newer) in order to be able to run the Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars demo:

http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx

If you're using a laptop and cannot use the normal Catalyst drivers, try the Mobility Catalyst drivers:

http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx?p=xp/mobility-xp

ATI just released the official Cat 7.9 drivers. So my question is do we still need to use the hotfix or can we just use the official driver?

NoControl

Gawd, the demo requires drivers that were released 1 hour before lauch of the demo :p

Ok, that's great and all... but the ATI site states there is a problem with x1950 AGP cards with drivers later than 7.7.

So, now what?

yeah its nice but uhm, When I try to use these drivers with my agp radeon x1600 i get screwed each time i try to restart my computer. It hangs right when it starts windows and forces a restart to "last known good configuration"

Im running vista 32 bit ... ATI X1900

I installed it, rebooted my PC, but when windows loads, my computer goes into stand by and I cannot do anything but restart the PC and the same stuff happens again unless I boot in safe mode.

I tried the game under catalyst 7.8 and it ran great wtf is wrong lol

Caution: Installing the Catalyst software suite 7.8 or 7.9 on a system containing the ATI Radeon™ X1950 AGP series of product may result in either the desktop failing to be drawn properly or the operating system failing to boot. It is recommended to continue using Catalyst 7.7 for this product at this time.

Oh well, on to other games I guess.

Limech
09-11-2007, 01:53 AM
Oh yeah, I forgot. ATI sucks. Only reason I went with them is because nVidia doesn't have any newer chipsets on AGP. :(

i have a x1300 pro, and i tried playing the game and it didnt let me change resolution, plus it ran like crap, i updated the driver, now it says the current driver/video card combination does not work, will dling 7.9 fix this, or make it so icant use my computer?

ATI just released the official Cat 7.9 drivers. So my question is do we still need to use the hotfix or can we just use the official driver?

same question.
uncompressing both packages and running "checkver" shows exactly same driver/catalyst versions.

The only thing i have seen different from the Official Cat 7.9 drivers and the supposed "hot fix" driver package is that the hotfix is nonwhql. so i dont now if its any different that its not qualified by windows..

I played the demo on Cat 7.7 and 7.9 (7.8 is broken 4 me) I had no problems on my end. Using a X1600pro here.

1 Question...

I have the hotfix driver, with X1950 GT. At full resolution everything works quite well but when i activate the Soft Particles the FPS comes down to 5 FPS (the average when I'm playing its 36FPS At 1440x900 AntiAx2)

Trilogy
09-11-2007, 03:31 PM
Its exactly the same thing here, i install the 7.9 Driver.
Then i restart my pc and it goes back into a restart.
I played the game with the 7.8 Driver but it runs crappy:confused: and i wonder why because the minimum Sys Req's are way lower then my System.

My system:

AMD Sempron 3000+ 1.8Ghz
MB: MSI K8MM-V
1536MB Memory
Sapphire Radeon X1600 Pro 512MB (AGP)
150GB Hard Disk

If anyone experiences the same Sh*t here please reply.
And if anyone knows a solution i would be thankfull.

I just got OpenGL error before update the driver

and with 7.9 and hotfix, a C++ error

What about if OpenGL is cause of the problem for game refusing to work? like at my case..

My system does qualify for High, but there's few things my OpenGL misses.

Where i can update this?

For some reason the 7.8/7.9 drivers are broken for X1000 series AGP cards.

Thats why you have to use 7.7 or earlier... says so right in the release notes

i downloaded/installed the lastest 7.9 ati drivers(from the ati website not the hot fix) and everything worked great with the demo. the hotfix and ati driver site have two different file sizes (hotfix is 44 mb and ati's site for drivers is 35mb)

I also have the x1600pro 512mb card (agp)

Finally i can play.

But with 7.7 + AND Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 SP1 Redistributable Package (x86) (released in 8/27/2007)

that's why 7.9 can solve the problem because it included in the package

I'd just like to report a success with 9800Pro. I doubt that this post will be of much help to anyone, but at least we know it can work on old PCs like mine.

I'm playing the demo with Catalyst 7.7. I didn't do anything special that I recall and it doesn't work every time but most of the time the game doesn't crash and lets me play, which is great because the latest Cat 7.9 drivers give me HUGE slowdowns making the game unplayable.

hello guys,

at first my system;

P4 - 2,66 Ghz
Graphiccard; ATI X800 - XT PE - 256mbr (an AGP Card)

Now my problem;

I played the Beta 2 with the Display Diver 6.9 - it works very well (sometimes crashes, but it doesn´t matter)

Now i can´t play the Demo with the 6.9 driver.
I installed the 7.9 driver - start the game - crashed into bluescreen and i have to restart my PC

I installed after this the Hotfix - start the game - the same problem = Crashing ... i have to restart my PC

Can somebody help, what could i do?

Just an FYI:

I am running the demo just fine with catalyst 5.11 drivers. I am not sure what issues the 7.9 drivers address, but I have not experienced any crashes or hangs.

Annoying... I've had issues with OpenGL applications for a while under the recent ATI drivers (I am really angry about this... I hate poor drivers more than anything), and I found one interesting about it... whilst all OpenGL apps fail to work on my primary monitor (blank, frozen screen), move the window into my secondary monitor (I have two, just an FYI), and hey presto things work. So... with ET:QW experiencing similar problems, I simply did the whole windowed mode thing through the config file and then moved the window onto my secondary monitor. And what do ya know... it worked. Played for about 20 minutes before a crash froze the whole computer... wonderful. As enjoyable as it was, if problems persist, I may as well wait for the full version or until ATI gets a decent driver release out.

My system uses XP x64, I have a X1900XT 512MB and an overclocked AMD 4200 with 2GB of RAM...

I've just installed the full game.

My system is a Core 2 6700, 2GB RAM and a Radeon 2900 XT with a 150GB Raptor. It's pretty damn new and pretty damn quick.

The demo didn't work with 7.8 drivers, neither did the full game. Now I've got 7.9 drivers and it still doesn't work.

Absolutely pathetic on both ATI and id's part. How long have they had to get this working??? I saw a near complete demo several month's ago:-

Short answer: the latest one.

Long answer: You can only have one driver active at any given time so which one you install depends on whether their latest one does what you want and doesn't cause problems for other games.

Cheers guys. The game loads now (haven't had time to play it, mind). Seems a bit insane on ATI and id's part to let things get this far - it's clear many are affected and not everyone can download 100MB files in addition to 30MB drivers. Hardly anyone is going to know to look on these forums for an answer.

Yes. In this case, this "hotfix" is no different than a regular driver update: you always have to uninstall your current ATI driver before you can install the new one.

Is there any solution for the Ati mobility Radeon HD2600? I'm using a HP Compaq 8510p Notebook and get the same mistake as the others.

According to HP I am having the latest drivers installed. ATI is not offering drivers for mobility Radeon HD2600 :(

Yes. In this case, this "hotfix" is no different than a regular driver update: you always have to uninstall your current ATI driver before you can install the new one.

Worked a treat thanks! And now no lag fps slow down when I first log on.

So just using the update funtion of the Catalyst installer won't work?

The old driver must? be removed before installation of the new one?

Can I damage my mobility Radeon HD2600 when installing non mobility catalyst control centers?

The link to the mobility catalyst is unfortunately for windows XP only :(

I am using Vista Business.

To avoid any problems you should ALWAYS uninstall the previous driver, reboot, install the new one and reboot again. You may be able to bypass some of these steps with certain driver versions but I wouldn't recommend it.

Can I damage my mobility Radeon HD2600 when installing non mobility catalyst control centers?

Not really. At worst the driver will not install because your hardware isn't supported and you'll have to reinstall your current ones.

I'm gonna try 7.7 and 7.9 Hotfix drivers now, as the 7.9 i'm using atm give me small stuttering that makes the game basically unplayable. Can anyone say they got better performance with 7.7/7.9 Hf, compared to 7.9?

Okay...

Played the game for a while with smooth fps :D ... then out of nowhere it started crashing.
Got the old vista close the program window after a few mins of gaming.

So i thought i had a graph driver issue....

Installed the Ati 7.9 (vista 64) driver ass recomended since I have the XT1900 series.

Got the new drives installed now but what on earth is happening to the fps ?

Im not even able to play the game anymore. Think I have like 3 fps or something.....

uhm... help anyone :)

Do you have single digit fps ALL the time, or just in the first 30 or so seconds after spawning? If the later, I had to revert to the 7.7 drivers to fix it.

Also, are you using the (2nd) Cat 7.9 hotfix?

Unfortunately no. That card is a DirectX 8.1 card (and btw, ATI no longer supports it in the recent drivers). Nearly all recent games now require a DirectX 9 card.

The minimum video card requirements to run ETQW are either a GeforceFX 5700 or higher (not including 5700LE and 5700VE) or an ATI Radeon 9700 or higher.

I will try to install winxp instead of vista - perhaps this helps

 This was by sure the last game I bought from either splash damage or id software

When they are not capable of programming games to work on current systems they should go and develop desktop applications or screensavers.

Other developer of recent games show too to programm games without any problms with graphic cards. Just as Dark Messiah, Supreme Commander or C&C3 - They are graphics power eaters, but they work smooth in high resolution and high details - and best of all they start at least...

Well this SUCKS.

No way in hell I'm upgrading to the 7.9 drivers.

The older cards (like my 9800Pro) are WAY faster when you use drivers that were made around the same time....anything made within the past few years REALLY slows down older ATI cards. :(

I installed Catalyst 6.12 (last of the 6.x series) for my AGP 1950 Pro AGP, and the demo's "LOAD UI" thing loads about 3 times faster than with 7.9 "Quake Wars hotfix" (at least the first revision - I haven't tried the second revision). The actual map loading "Spawning entities" process loads about 2x faster. There's no initial slowdown when a map loads, either. Zero. Zilch. Nada. The framerate is stable from the start.

Spread the word.

P.S. Set the Catalyst AI to "Advanced" for best performance. There are no side-effects, at least in ET:QW.

All ATI users must download and install the latest Catalyst drivers (7.9 or newer) in order to be able to run the Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars demo:

If you're using a laptop and cannot use the normal Catalyst drivers, try the Mobility Catalyst drivers:

If anyone here is a OS X Bootcamp user with an aluminum iMac. The game works with the built in Radeon 2600 XT, you just have to find a way to install ATI's Catalyst Control Center, and disable "Catalyst A.I." every time you start your computer.

I installed the Catalyst 7.10 and I have a Radeon 9800 Pro. Whenever I enter a game, and i spawn for the first time, the whole game lags at around 2-5 fps, just staying almost frozen, then about 1 minute later, it goes away and I can play. It's really weird. Also I'm having a ton of in-game stutter/pauses that just happen randomly every 2 minutes or so.

Try to set 'Triple Buffering' on from Ati ccc.
That solved my problem with above problem (I had similar behavior every time I switched teams between GDF/Strogg).

:) No problemo, nice to hear that it worked.

Actually I found this out accidentally.
I had "triple buffering" setting enabled to fix the "wallhack" problem which some of us had during ET:QW Beta.
I forgot that setting when the wallhack problem was fixed,
and just recently I disabled "triple buffering" --> horrible fps drop/lag started at first spawn.

Download the latest ATI Catalyst™ 7.10 Display Driver for your operating system about 44.7Mb from http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html

Then Download the mod tool as these driver will not install on laptops unless you have it so go here and have a good read.

I've been having the same problem since the first beta release. Sometimes the game will just lock up and freeze when I'm in a vehicle's cockpit. The only way to get back to the desktop is to power-down the PC. Doesn't matter what drivers I've used, it has happened across the board. I'm getting sick of it. I don't know if it's an ATI thing or a Quake Wars thing but I've had enough.

My system specs:
DFI Lanparty Ultra-D 939
A64 3500+ 393 @ 2.5Ghz
2GB PC 3200 (Corsair XMS)
Audigy 2 ZS
Radeon X1900XT @XTX clocks

I've found that with previous drivers I could disable Catalyst A.I. and not have this problem but it hasn't worked with the last two releases (7.9, 7.10). I'm using 7.10 now.

One of the main reason's I moved to Leopard immediately was to ensure BootCamp kept working, and a desire to get updated ATI Graphics drivers. Unfortunately, the ATI drivers included in the Leopard DVD do not appear any more recent than those that came with BootCamp 1.4 beta.

I'm running Vista Ultimate via BootCamp on a 24" iMac with the ATI Radeon HD 2600 graphics card, which is actually a Radeon Mobility HD 2600. Several games, particularly Quake Wars: Enemy Territory require ATI Catalyst drivers v7.9 or greater to even run. Unfortunately since the iMac uses the Mobility Radeon, the ATI Catalyst 7.9 or 7.10 driver package can't be used to update the graphics drivers on these machines. I tried doing this, and the Catalyst Control Center simply does not install.

We're completely dependent on Apple to update these drivers .. and I'm hoping now that BootCamp is a retail product we'll see updated Windows drivers soon.

If anyone knows when they might be coming, or knows of a workaround to get Quake Wars: Enemy Territory with the current drivers please post!

Well, there is the workaround/hack from http://www.driverheaven.net/modtool/ which seems to work for some, but it also doesn't work for me, as pointed out in this (http://community.enemyterritory.com/forums/showthread.php?t=14828)
thread.
Guess it's waiting then :(

I got it to work, and no driver modding was involved!!!!!!!!

Immense thanks to a post I saw in the Apple BootCamp forums. Since I'm running Vista under BootCamp, I needed to modify the instructions on the link below. The trick was being able to find the .inf file in the ATI driver package, and then manually pointing to it. For the record, here's Tweeker's original post on how to update the ATI 2600 drivers in XP:

http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1017&message=24987376

Here's my slight modification on how I did this in Vista:

Step 1 in the above link says to download Dot Net 2.0 since the ATI driver installer needs it, but since Visat already has Dot Net installed, this wsn't needed.

Step 2, go to ATI driver support page and download the latest Catalyst driver for 32-bit Vista for teh Radeon HD 2600 series, current driver is v7.10 (https://a248.e.akamai.net/f/674/9206/0/www2.ati.com/gamesite/7-10_vista32_dd_53254.exe)

Step 3, after download, launch the installer, let it extract the installer files into C:\ATI, and then at the next screen quit the installer. (Note: if you don't do this the installation will continue just fine, and you'll get a working driver but it WON'T be one that works with Quake War: Enemy Territory for reasons described below. To get this to work (and that's the whole point) proceed with the manual process below. If by chance you let the installer do its thing all the way through, now worries, you can uninstall the ATI driver package from the control panel and you'll be rebooted running a standard VGA driver. At this point you can simply continue with the manual process below since the files you need are alerady in C:\ATI)

Step 4, close out the installer and right click on My Computer, go to Properties.

Step 5, go to the Hardware tab in Properties, and then to the Device Manager, drop down the Display adapters, and you should see Mobility Radeon HD 2600 XT, this is WRONG, the video card is not an XT version like it's been rumored to be on the web, it's not a mobile card either.

Step 6, right click on the video card and choose Update Driver, in Vista now pick "Browse my computer for driver software",

Step 7, in the next box don't start browsing yet!!, instead pick "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer", and then click on the "Have Disk" button.

Step 8, Now click Browse and go to C: > ATI > SUPPORT > 7-10_vista32_dd_53254 > Packages > Drivers > Display > LH_INF, and select the CL_53254.inf file in there, and click Open.

Step 9, now you should have a huge list of the graphics cards, this is all the cards that the Catalyst driver supports, you want to find ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro, and install that, you might get a message saying this driver isn't certified, ignore it and continue.

Step 10, after all is finished, reboot.

Voila!!!! Enemy Territory will now scream on your Alu iMac

This is all I needed to do to get going, so you can stop here if you wish. The intructions for XP, however, then go on to say:

"The only down side to this, nobody has found a way to fully install Catalyst Control Center, so if you wanna get down and dirty in the video cards settings, you will have to download a program called ATI Tray Tool, you can easily find it with Google, it's basically a ATI CCC clone, lets you force the video cards features like Antialiasing and v-sync."

I've seen multiple opinions on this ... most say that it is possible to install the ATI catalyst control center, and this is preferred over the ATI Tray Tool, but opinions differ on how to do the install. I haven't explored these options a) because I don't seem to need it, and b) now that my display drivers are happy, the last thing I want to do is undo a good thing by somehow messing up the CCC install!

Rock on.

Many thanks, that helped me getting it started.

I'm just not used to having to deal with those kind of issues anymore, after 4 years without using windows at home.

I got the best Performance with the 7.3 Driver for my 1900XTX, the 7.10 lags like hell. For the first 2-3 min after the map was started I'm unable to click anything in the limbo Menu. I finally downgraded to 7.3 to solve it.

you have to enable triple buffering, then the lag at map start should be gone.

Hey guys,
Well I spent a lengthy time reading through every post on this forum thread and have found several solution methods for resolving the same Video Card error as everyone else on here.
Only problem: there's so many different ways to try and get this to work that I don't know where to start. I've already tried several different methods revolving around Catalyst 7.9-though I haven't tried 7.9 hotfix or 7.7(since I can't locate a dl link for it).

I was hoping to get some more concrete information from the users on here with my similar specs and find out what worked for them. There were some relevant post with my same Vid Card, but those were running different OSs or computer's all together.

I have XP sp2 with .net 2.0 installed.
Catalyst 7.9 most recently updated, not HF.
ATI Radeon 2600 Pro AGP 3.0 512MB DDR2
Intel Pentium 4 2.53GHz
1.5 MB RAM
120GB HD

I run BF2142 fine, but this still won't work. Someone had mentioned something about changing the settings in the control center, but where in the control center?

Thanks guys for helping this gamer get on this game.

I spent all day installing and uninstalling drivers, hotfixes, and various other attempts to fix this issue. What finally worked for me was I installed Driver 7.10 then go into the Catalyst control and turn off Catalyst A.I. then I turned on triple buffering. All is well and I should be back into it tomorrow. :D... A bit of extra info I have an AGP 512 X1300 made by Geforce, and this is how I resolved my issue.

Well, turning off A.I. did it. I sat down, turned it on and was watching a movie on TV when I saw the game actually load to my surprise.

Much thanks bud

Hi All,

I'd like to re-iterate that in order to be fully compatible using ATi Hardware, you need to be using the ATi 7.9 HotFix Driver.

Please try downloading and installing the ATi 7.9 HotFix Driver from this location:

http://support.ati.com/ics/support/d...asp?deptID=894

Then select the KnowledgeBase Tab.

Then select, 737-29837: Catalyst 7.9 Hotfix.

You can then choose the install for Vista or XP.

If this doesn't fix your issue, please respond and let us know what the issues your seeing are and your system setup/specs.

Regards,

Adam

I´ve the same problem after installing the new ETQW´s update. Let´s see if this can fix it, I´m using a radeon 9500 pro 128 on a P4.

Hi,
It worked just fine ;)

I installed first the 7.10 Catalist Driver and after that the 7.9 driver hotfix. I disabled the A.I. and enable the AGP to 8x, fast AGP write etc. ... (plain settings).

Now it plays even better :P

It worked for me and I´m using a 9500 pro, P4@2,6GHz with 1,5 Gb RAM on XP professional SP2.
