PROBLEM: ERROR DURING INITIALIZATION WHEN LOADING
If this error is received with messaging that includes "ERROR: The current video card / driver combination does not support the necesary features", this is likely due to outdated drivers or possibly having the Extension limit enabled in the NVIDIA Control Panel. To disable this, follow these steps and try re-launching the game:
1. Open the NVIDIA Control Panel
2. Select 'Manage 3D Settings'
3. Find the 'Extension limit' option, and set it to 'Off'.
4. Apply the changes and then re-launch the game.

you need to update your graphics drivers to 7.10. make sure to run drivercleaner or driversweeper after the uninstallation of the current ones.

Okay, this may seem like stupid question, but my friend has the same situation going on and is there anyway he could download one of those new chipsets you mentioned or does he have to go buy it and install it manually?

You can't download a chipset, it's a piece of hardware (a "part" of your video card). If your card is not supported, you need to get a better one that is supported.
Note that this does not apply to all posts in this thread though (only to the " Mobile Intel(R) 945 Express Chipset Family" it seems to me). The 8800GTX for example is a very powerfull and supported card and the error is most likely realted to drivers here (you can download those from the internet for free), so you friend should check what kind of hardware he has and report back here.
To clarify: getting this error does NOT mean that you have to buy a new video card - it may, though.

He downloaded a "Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset Family" driver update but it still had the problem. So I don't know if he should have just downloaded a "Mobile Intel(R) 945 Express Chipset Family" driver update instead, or did he do everything okay?

First of all, those look like different things. Unless you have reason to believe the 945 and 965 drivers are compatible, you would need the 945 drivers. Or the 965 was just a typo ;)
However, all this is pointless for etqw because the game will almost certainly not run on either of those chips, and even if it did run, would not give playable performance.
edit:
Looking at the intel site, there is one file for both those chipsets, so it's probably the right thing.

I have the same error message. In my case it's special because I was playing with the game before. Then I installed Call of Duty 4 and changed some settings in the Catalyst CC after that I can't run QW.
I have ATI X1400 with the following driver:
Driver Packaging Version 8.383.1.1.3-070621a2-050878C-Lenovo
Provider ATI Technologies Inc.
2D Driver Version 6.14.10.6698

I have this error message:

And this happened after patch 1.2 install

Okay the solution was: rename etqw.exe to etqw_test.exe
I dont know why but this solution worked for me.
Seems every ATI card user should do it after 1.2 patch. Somebody really messed up something in that patch.

8 series Nvidia cards are (randomly, not everyone..but a lot of ppl) having issues with ET:QW.
After long hours of googling and messing with my settings, playing in a Window is the only option working for me at the moment (8700 gt, 256meg, but its really a overclocked 8600 gt supposedly).
Thats not too bad, since you can stretch the window nearly full-screen anyway...try that out, and Google et:qw Tweak guide, or look Here (http://www.tweakguides.com/ETQW_2.html):
raw link:
http://www.tweakguides.com/ETQW_2.html
And use those tweaks for some help.
Also, This forum (http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=172717)helped me out a bit.

If you have the latest drivers (which you seem to have) then it means exactly what that says. Your drivers don't expose the extensions required. Seems fairly odd though, as the 7600 definitely should support GLSL. At this point that's more a question for NVIDIA.

It solved my problem, Thanks champ !!!
I was up a while trying to set different setting to have Quake Wars work, I installed new drivers and still had the error...But turning off the extension limit did it !!
Now All I need to figure out why my bro's computer, which is about 1/3 less powerful than mine is running better and can run with high graphic settings and mine have to be on low to play a game....
I have a 128 mb physics card, I disabled it and it did not help,
( these card are not too bad btw, you get nice display of little pieces flying everywhere from a blast in supported games, like World Of Conflict
I have a 7300 Geforce and 3.2 duel intel.
I tried to reinstall my system, and it did not like it one bit, with errors popping up everywhere, I just made it back to my desktop to run system restore.
All good but I have a Explorer Icon on my desktop that creates a shortcut when you double click it....

I have a 7300 Geforce
That's a very low end card.
yea but it uses my physic card too I think...so it gives me a little extra ...
My system registered my Geforce as 512 kb, but it's a 256 + 128 Physics card...
So it has rounded it up to 512 kb... I was just play the Game ...this Quake wars is awesome...
We want to play multiplayer over LAN, but my bro said something about needing another computer to run a server ? So that 3 PC we need to play a Game...do we really need that ?

It doesn't work this way. The physics card requires specific support from the game, which ETQW doesn't have. Also, the amount of memory isn't nearly as important as the speed of the card. No matter what, a 7300 isn't going to give you good performance, because it's a slow budget card. I suggest turning the settings down as low as you can stand.

You don't have to run a 3rd PC for the server. You can run it on the same computer as one of the clients. You'll want to use the best computer available to host the server in this case.

thats good to hear, I'll tell my bro l8r, cos he thought we can't play together.

Sup, I'm having the same error message as well. I just bought the game with the christmas money I had and was really anxious to get the game up and running until I saw this message that the thread is talking about.
Now before I begin about how I'm gonna try to update my stuff, My rig is:
1. AMD Athlon 3800+ (Single core 2.4 ghz)
2. 1 gig of Corsair Ram
3. Sapphire X1650XT
4. 450 Watt PSU
5. 80 Gig HDD
6. Fans, etc.
Well, I'm dling Catalyst 7.11 for XP and I'm also getting the Display Driver 6.11 for my X1650xt just like many of the people on this thread have recommended but I was worried about the following:
Am I getting the right things to update my rig?
Cause there's another driver called WDM Driver Catalyst 7.11 on the bottom of the page and I had no idea if I should get that instead of the 6.11 Display driver since its not 7.11 like you guys recommended.
What should I do?
Here's the link to the page i'm talking about (Just making sure so I don't install the wrong drivers for the game):

Actual version is 7.12 .
What you could try is a "clean" install.
1. Uninstall your old Ati software completely (controlpanel->software), reboot
2. Run this program http://www.guru3d.com/index.php?page=driversweeper (select Ati-Display), reboot
3. Install the new driver, reboot http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx

hey man, i can help you with the crossfire stuff, there are really two ways to go about it with crossfire, you can either disable catalyst ai, but the problem with that is it basically takes crossfire out with it, so here's what i do (kinda sucks cuz qw doesn't work with xfire now but i can live without the messenger) i rename the exe and keep catalyst ai on, of course make sure you are using catalyst 8.4 as that's the newest for a couple more weeks anyway, doing it this way has netted me great framerates with AA (4x) and AF (16x), might wanna do some testing yourself to find out what works best for you :), hope this helps

Most likely you need to update graphics drivers. The other possibility is that your graphics card is below the minimum requirements for etqw.

afaik, your graphics adapter doesn't support OpenGL to the extent required for the game, outside of trying to update to the latest drivers I don't think there is any other option
