First things first, make sure your volume is turned up. If that's not it, if you're using a set of speakers (not a headset) that has a power switch, make sure that your speakers are turned on. If you're using a headset, make sure that it's plugged into the jacks on the back of your computer, and if it is make sure that the correct wire is plugged into the correct hole. If none of those are the problem, you'll need to go into the game and double check your sound settings. Unfortunantly I'm not @ home right now or I'd check and see what mine are to help you out, but there are a lot of helpful people here that'll give you more advise. Good luck...
And by the way, I'm not trying to make you sound dumb or anything, it's just that I've been able to help a couple of other people out in other games in your situation....believe it or not.

I can only hear like a backround noise....like a drum beating every so often and the sound of a ship flying overhead every 30 seconds or so. I can hear no in game sounds at all.
Then when I shut down the game in frustration I can't play any media with sound and have to reboot my comp. to get sound back.
Im also having this problem.
And im also having a SoundMax Integrated Digital HD audio chip on my P5B Deluxe (im using S/PDIF digital output if this mathers)
I hope that there's a solution for this that doesnt involve buying a "real soundcard"...
Problem solved here.
It appeared my sound hardware acceleration was set to none (in control panel)
I did this when i was having major sound-issues with Oblivion and forgot about it :x
Setting it back to full acceleration made the sound work again.

No sound at all on the demo. Had same issue in beta. Toggled compression. Checked hardware acceleration (wasnt full but tried with full, no difference).
