Glad all you Vista folks got it sorted out. But it seems that the commen thing is the AMD 64 X2, i.e. AMD dual core thats the problem here.

I have both the AMD cpu driver and the MS dual core fix loaded.

And my pc has been switched off for the night and the demo still dosn't work....

I'm thinking if you are getting an error report you have a different problem to us. We have absolutely nothing visible happening... as Cougar_DK said mouse cursor changes to a hour glass and then nothing happens. The executable does start, if you change your update speed in Task Manager you will see it listed in Processes for an instant.

Does anyone know if there is a debug mode? Maybe a command line parameter to produce a log that might give us something to work on.

And my pc has been switched off for the night and the demo still dosn't work....

Cougar_DK that comment made me laugh first time I read it.... looks like in a last attempt you tried it with your PC off!!! Sorry, its the only thing I can find to laugh about... :(

heller44, sounds like your problem might be slightly different as you are getting a black box flash up .... we are getting nothing. You may want to start a thread and include your specs and driver details (make sure they are all the latest).

I think some sort of log file might help us all (see how I'm pushing for this ... please have a debug mode!).

Good luck

We might have a winner here:

please work (http://community.enemyterritory.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8523)

Just in case you can't be bothered to click it:

My game wouldn't start (just like others reported too: etqw.exe flashing up for half a second in tasks, then gone, nothing more). So I started shutting down background apps/processes and the problem turned out to be:
Logitech SetPoint.
No idea why that would be but as long as it runs, etqw won't, as soon as I exit it, etqw runs. Updating SetPoint to it's most current version did also not help. But at least I can run the game now.
Downside is, I can only use 5 of my 8 mouse buttons in etqw.

I'm at work right now but I'm crossing my fingers and hoping this will work cos I know I run SetPoint!

Last night I installed the game, and when I went to launch it, it would crash saying it was missing files.

I was worried I had a bad-download (I DL'ed it at work and put it on a flash-drive to take home) but I uninstalled it and reinstalled.....started up first try.

im running an nvidia card, and everything (I mean everything) has the latest drives as of 9/10/2007...lol

Maybe you should try a reinstall....if you are still having a render problem, try uninstalling your video driver, reboot, reinstall latest video driver, restart, play.

Inzzy can you post in a more relevent thread, this problem has many threads dedicated to it and you may actually find help in one. Such as:
PROBLEM: ERROR DURING INITIALIZATION WHEN LOADING

If this error is received with messaging that includes "ERROR: The current video card / driver combination does not support the necesary features", this is likely due to outdated drivers or possibly having the Extension limit enabled in the NVIDIA Control Panel. To disable this, follow these steps and try re-launching the game:

1. Open the NVIDIA Control Panel
2. Select 'Manage 3D Settings'
3. Find the 'Extension limit' option, and set it to 'Off'.
4. Apply the changes and then re-launch the game.

That was from a quick search.... search is your friend!

I know we all just want to play the game but we are trying to get a fix for a specific problem in this thread, so if you have any suggestions on that feel free.

.... sorry just really frustrated as I can't try a game I've been waiting for ages to play!

Good luck on your problem

Hi M1ster_Happy, sorry to hear that it didn't worked. I havn't tried it yet since I'm in bed after a little surgery. But will try it, so I can say I have tried it.

Hi Cougar_DK,

I've seen a few Splash Damage members posting so I guess they are about, if they don't know the answer I guess they won't post which is fair enough. Also our problem seems to be a minority one (is it 4 of us?) so I'm guessing it won't be high priority, makes sense to fix problems affecting majority of users first.

I've looked at your DxDiag.txt output and I don't think you have any of the same hardware as me. After work (before the England game) I'll post my DxDiag.txt and a detailed list of running processes (I'll use Process Explorer v10.2). Maybe this will give us some ideas ... I hope! I'm also wondering if I've over optimised XP and stopped a service that is being used at the start up of the exe, have you done this too? (I'm doubting this has anything to do with it but i'll try anything right now...)

Oh , and hope you are up and about soon.

Seraph777 I think we all feel your pain here... can you post a DxDiag report and if possible a process list (maybe a more detailed one than Task Manager shows).

We must have something in common to cause this. The SetPoint shutdown did it for ChickenSalad and he can reproduce it just be running SetPoint again. But other SetPoint users can run the game fine! Is everyone running at least one Logitech device? I've got a mouse and webcam....

Stupid fix but it worked for me. If you have an lcd panel try plugging in both connections the vga and dvi connections to your computer . Make sure they are bot seen and then try to start the demo.

I had dual monitors at one point on my computer but not anymore. Quakewars must not like that and the demo would blue screen on me on startup. I connected both connections to the computer on a hunch and now the demo boots up.

I sent a PM to jRAD asking if there is a lower level debug we can switch on to maybe get an error out.

As the thread is filled with a few other problem I'll just sum up the actual problem we have:

Main Problem - Click the desktop shortcut for ETQW, my mouse cursor changes to a hour glass and then back to a cursor... nothing happens.

The exe does run for an instant as it appears in the process list but then is gone. Hope this stands out a little for anyone trying to help.

Thanks everyone whos tried so far... I'm sure we'll get there.

Yep... its easy to try ... just make sure when you uninstall you select the option to save your settings (its a tick box in the uninstall process)... this way you can reinstall really easily (just ignore it when it asks for your serial as it will give you already in use message). I switched the XP firewall back on while it was uninstalled just in case ;)

Rafty
09-13-2007, 09:52 AM
what is steel security doing?
i have no probs using avast and i don't need a firewall coz i'm behind a router. also a firewall or antivirus is not needed to play.
you could check what services are running and maybe it's enough to disable the steel security service while playing?

Cougar_DK
09-13-2007, 01:09 PM
Hi M1ster_Happy, and I can confirm the same. Uninstalling SteelSecurity makes the game work!!!!!

Hope they will figure something out.

M1ster_Happy
09-13-2007, 02:39 PM
Basically I was a little confused when I tried booting to Windows Safe Mode and clicking the ETQWs icon, I was expecting something to happen and then an error.... but still nothing. So I thought about what was still running. The services for SteelSecurity (Bullguard) still run in Safe Mode, but I was of the opinion it would let me know if it stopped something running! As a last resort I uninstalled SS, rebooted, then casually clicked the icon expecting nothing to happen ... but the game ran!!! I reinstalled SS and again nothing from clicking ETQW.

So uninstalling it really did work for me, and like I said its easy to uninstall and reinstall because theres an option to keep all of your setting. (Just for testing not regularly obviously)

I'm sure there is a way to set it up so it allows it to run. But uninstalling was the easiest and quickest way to find out if that was causing my problem. I will investigate and try some settings, also Bullguard have really good 24 hour support so I might ask them too. If not then what Rafty suggested about stopping one of the SS services may do the trick. I do have router/firewall protection, but I use a firewall because I like to know what is going out.

See normally SS turns off alot of settings itself and opens the relevent ports when you game as it is a gamers firewall/antivirus program. However, this is a new game and it doesn't know it so I'm not sure which bit of it is stopping the exe.

If anyone gets the game running with SS installed let us know what settings you had to change.

Cougar_DK thanks for the confirmation, hope you enjoy playing.

=)

Hi there,
I'm having the same issues as the rest of you guys, and I also use Bullguard. But uninstalling did nothing good. Even tried reinstalling and unstalling both (BG and SS) again to make sure my uninstall programs would get ALL files. Also used the start-up programs to make sure that nothing but the essential is running. Anyone got any ideas?

M1ster_Happy
09-13-2007, 05:20 PM
Someone else fixed it by closing Logitech SetPoint... do you have that?

You could try what I did and run it in Windows Safe Mode as it doesn't load up many processes. The game won't play but it may do something, if it does then you know its a process/service which doesn't run in Safe Mode. If it doesn't then you have a shorter list to investigate!

Check your services list and see if there is anything in there that might cause it to not run (third party security software?).

Good luck

I don't want nothing to do with Logitech (No hatin' towards the users though), and only security programs I use is Bullguard. I'll tryout the safemode though. I sure do hope the final game won't cause these issues.

No Logitech or SS/BG stuff on my PC. I had this problem with the demo and thought buying the full game (with 1.2 patch) would work! I'm looking at videos, screenshots and reviews just to get close to my fix of ETQW, lol.
