maybe you are trying to force a res that your monitor doesn't support or have a refresh rate locked.

r_displayrefresh is the refresh rate cvar

r_mode is the resolution cvar

Have a play aruond with them, you may need to use vid_restart when testing resolutions.

You need a new Catalyst for the ATI driver. I read to update while you downloaded off somewhere. Driver would be the best thing for now.

kay well i updated the driver, it did need updating, but now when i try and start ETQW a window pops up saying it failed to initialize and that its closing, it says the current video card/videodriver combination does not support GL_ARB_occlusion_query

Which Driver Version did you install ? It should be Catalyst 7.9, that's the latest.
