View Full Version : Can't get a server list in demo

I can't get a server list. It just refreshes indefinitely. If I wait long enough, I'll occasionally get a list, but the vast majority of servers are empty, and only a handful of people are on the active ones. When this happens, I can successfully join those servers. Occasionally I'll be booted to the main menu with a connection lost error.

Any ideas? I was playing the betas before with no issue.

Bump! I can join servers through directconnect if I have an IP, but that's no way to play.

Virginia. I'm glad it's not just me.

try the obvious
reboot router
check source (top left server browser)
uncheck all filters (top right server browser)

Maybe it's your firewall. I'd try disabling it and, if that works, go into the firewall software and add QW to the "allowed programs" list.

And make sure you clear all the Filters, make sure Punkbuster is checked, and make sure it's set to "Internet" and not "History". Good luck.

don't know if that's related as my problem was different, but can you try to set net_maxqosrequests to a lower value than 12? eg 6 and try again? give feedback then please.

my isp seems to have a problem with 12, but 6 works for me. RR2DO2 was so kind to help me find that out :)

These kind of problems are frequently caused by NAT routers with less-than-stellar quality, performance, stability or resources. The server browser tries to query many servers in quick succession, which can cause the NAT session table in your router to overflow or, in extreme cases, cause the router to choke and die. Tweaking the router settings (if possible) to allow for more concurrent connections would help. A firmware update (if available) would be a possible solution as well. And, as Joe said, reducing the net_maxQoSRequests setting would be a likely workaround.

I have the same problem, I don't have a router or modem...I'm connected to the university network.

Yeah, I, too, have the same problem, I'm on a university network, and I'm in Virginia. I can also direct connect, though I've only tried one server and it was pretty laggy, which was either its location relative to mine, or my terrible network. In any case, I wouldn't think a bad network would effect the amount of servers I can get.

I haven't tried Battlefield 2142 on this network though, lemme do that, see if it has the same problem, and I'll get back to you guys.

Some (horrible, broken) routers have trouble with the volume of packets you get back doing server queries. You can try adjusting net_maxQoSRequests to reduce the number of queries the game sends at once.
from cvars.html

net_maxQoSRequests Controls the maximum number of server info requests that can be sent at once.
type: int [1, 32]
edit:
your isp or university provider might also see the flood of responses as a DOS attack and limit it :|

I have the same trouble, I'm on a university network..How do you edit the cvars.html? Where is that located? Thanks!

cvars.html is just a list cvars and their descriptions. You can get your own by typing htmlcvars in the console.

To open the console, use ctrl+alt+` (` may be different for non-us keyboards. It's whatever key normally opens the quake console)
You can set net_maxQoSRequests 6 or whatever there.

Alternately, create a plain text file called autoexec.cfg in your base directory (found under something like C:\Documents and Settings\Username\My Documents\id Software\Enemy Territory - QUAKE Wars Demo ) and add whatever settings you need to it.
For example

seta com_allowconsole 1
seta net_maxQoSRequests 6

the first line allows you to open the console with just ` and the second changes the number of requests etqw sends out at once.

Thanks reyalp, I figured it was some sort of console command, but usually you only need to push ` for it to come down. I'm gonna see if this works.

CrazyCrazyDoctor

Hmm, put the net_maxQoSRequests command all the way to 1 in the console and no servers were showing up.

Oh, and I tested BF 2142 and it has the servers popping up, though in game its laggy.

set developer 1
in the console and then do "get new list" in the browser. Then check the console again and see if it gives you any informative messages.

If you know any of the network ops staff at your university, you could always try showing up with a 6-pack and asking what the problem might be ;)

Given the number of reports, it's likely to be something they are doing.

if you still don't get a server list, then after you set the "developer 1" cvar, go to the following directory:

C:\<documents & settings>\<username>\<local settings>\<application data>\id Software\Enemy Territory - QUAKE Wars Demo\base

and post your "demonware.log" file. it might contain some more information.

I'm just getting "Scanned 0 servers" with the developer command. Setting the maximum requests lower doesn't seem to help. Now that I think about it, I did have occasional problems getting a list in the betas, but I would eventually get a list if I waited a minute or two when it happened. No problems getting a list in any other games. It's allowed through the windows firewall.

For what it's worth, I'm also a college student (JMU), but not on the university connection, and with no router.

Ok, so I reinstalled it, just for good measure, and the same problem happened...except this time, before I got a chance to try the set developer 1 command, I noticed that it was apparently trying to update Punkbuster from 1028 to 1029. Never said the update was a success.

CrazyCrazyDoctor

Nah, that wasn't the problem, just manually updated it.

Was a little different finding it in Vista, but it has been found.

I can see 900 servers at most and then it stops and actually CRASHES my internet (vent and other things work fine though). This has to be fixed before release.

Netgear wgr614 v.6 router.

I have the same problem. I cannot get to the play online screen it just times out. It says Please Wait and then about 45 seconds later Error - Connection Reset. I have my windows firewall turned off. My computer is connected directly to the cable modem. I can also see the message "Game is up to date". I have rebooted my computer. I have also uninstalled and reinstalled the game. I can host a lan game and have players direct IP connect. I am in Orlando FL on a Bright House Road Runner Lite connection. I am using a Webstar Scientific Atlanta, Inc. Cable Modem. Also I have a 3Com Gigabit LOM(3C940) onboard network card.

I can Direct connect to a server if a buddy gives me the IP address.

WARNING: Connection timed out

^^ here's your problem. for some reason there's a timeout with the connection. i had the same and lowering net_maxQoSRequests solved my problem. just to make sure: you didn't set net_maxQoSRequests while the server browser was open performing queries? imo just to make sure it really doesn't work for you: try setting it to a lower value, restart game, check if it's still set, click "play online" button and see what happens.

Definitely seems to be a router issue - unplugged from my router and everything was fine. However, it's only doing this with Quake Wars, so it seems QW might have a problem with routers. I'll try changing that setting though.

CrazyCrazyDoctor

ok, so I put the net_maxQoSRequests to 1 and it still didn't do anything, and yes, I did it before it was searching for servers. Nothing's popping up at all.

Could it just be that the internet is too slow? Because it really isn't that awesome here.

I have a WRT54g Version 8 running the latest firmware and I have this problem. It is fixed mostly by the method suggested, setting max qos to 6. The browser updates steadily until ~200 players, when there is a long pause before shooting up to a final number of ~2000.

I don't think my linksys is horrible or broken. Could you or anyone familiar with the router settings tell me what I can do in my router settings to allow more connections here?
