When etqw come out, can we just download game (for paid of curse, not for free) and play it instantly?

Will be there some services like STEAM or EA Link?

This will solve a big problem with localization versions, that comes out months later after initial release.

Please god no Steam.

I couldn't play Half Life 2 for a couple of weeks since my internet service was down when I bought it. It's just a freaking sales tool for Valve. If I want news, reviews, upcoming game info, etc... I'll go look for it... please dont make me have to go through extra steps before I can play a game.

Quake Wars already auto updates, and there is a single player portion to the game (bots), so imo no need for any crappy wrapper-like program around Quake Wars like Steam.

Why ya blame Steam. Actually its a fine platform for download, update and play games. In my eyes ID should do somthing like it. Valve fighted too much with that platform with pirathy.

Well, from the publisher's perspective offering games as a download poses some problems if the game is large. Valve can extol the virtues of Steam downloads when their main game (Half-Life 2) is only a few GBs big. With a game like QW (which I expect to go over 7gb) the economics of downloading doesn't pay off as much:

Valve serves a 3gb game for 50 euros/whatever, Activision serves a 7gb game for the same 50 euros. See where I'm going?

From the gamer's perspective there are also problems. The Direct2Drive and similar schemes have problems with getting dedicated patches later, which is not a problem for (primarily) single-player games but when you can't connect online because you don't have the latest patch it becomes a real problem for MP games. Steam doesn't have this problem but does have file decryption performance problems. I'm sure most people wouldn't like to have slower loading times or lower framerates (since MegaTexture stream) because of copy-protection.

I just hope they have some means of mandatory autoupdates like steam. There are too many people playing unpatched ET which really hurts the competitive community.

isendel
05-03-2007, 11:12 PM
updates shouldnt be mandatory - sometimes they break things completely. the et 2.60 patch for example was not used in the comp scene until etpro could be run with it

notification of a new patch is probably the best way of going about it. most of the unpatched players probably never knew there was one

I have no hopes about them adding download as an option for the game. And really it took some time for Steam to get usable to a lot of users irritation. It's quite good now, but it took some time.

Yes, autopatches would be nice. Didn't id say before they where looking into bittorrent usage in one of their products?

Well they are taking this game completely to the next level, I have no doubt there is going to be at least a notification system, if not an in-game autoupdater.

Really enjoy steams content manager, can be slow then a game is released though. Direct 2 Drive has high transfer rates, while I don't really enjoy the company I haven't had problems with games from them other than they don't have many games.

if this feature was going to happen, someone would have mentioned it by now.

I STRONGLY doubt it'll be available to download and play at release

I've bought a few games through Steam and I like the service. I think that ET:QW will be made available through DL eventually too. It looks to be an increasing trend tbh.

The only real answer for this would be something like Direct2Drive. Steam would be cool (don't know why some people hate it, wonderful tool from the start even though it was a bit buggy) but I don't see that happeneing. If you're worried about a program for the game auto-updating, I think I remember in an interview that they were working on a program that would auto-update the game.

I haven't heard of any partnerships between SD and anyone who operates a download service so I would venture to assume there won't be any "Pay and Play" option upon release. Running a service like that takes a lot of organization to do well, and unless SD is devoting a lot of resourses to it or has partnered with someone to handle it for them (for example Valve and Steam. God I hope not) then I doubt it will happen in time for launch.

It would be a cool option, but personally, I like having a physical copy of all my games. :)

I'd like to see a mailing list, created by the publisher and/or developer, for server admins so they get priority information when the latest updates are available. This way servers get updated quickly -- particularly Linux servers. It's preferable to do manual updates, with Linux, especially because symlinks of pk4's are often used for space saving, faster IO, and piracy prevention.

Thank you. :)

I just like having a boxed copy because it makes my purchase feel safer. I wouldn't like to have steam running to have to play the game but if the game was on staem that shouldn't be an issue since defcon works with and without.

imo I like to have the game box on my shelf

the only advantage would be to download the game if the DVD/CD is broken with the cd-key as authentication

It would be good to see an optical disc retail shop copy and a online
pay to download release of the game .

BUT what I find with most of the online pay to download games is:

The download to pay release is the SAME cost as the shop retail game
now the download copy does not need a disc , box or cost of sending it
around the world to be sold , or the cost of using a distro company to
market/sell the game for them , so WHY are they the same cost ?

Also the Online pay to download and Retail disc should be avail at the
SAME TIME AROUND THE WORLD .

Please dont let this be yet another game that comes out in USA in xx date
then months later everywere else

Direct2Drive is good in theory, but it has problems such as not being able to download a patch the day they come out for boxed versions, and it's just better to physicaly have the game.

Stop being lazy and go to your local Best Buy and get a copy IMO. :)

They're usually best used during the "cleaning up phase". Since it's usually only a single paper nowdays with some controll binds on them anyway.

I'd really like it if you could pre-load the game like with HL2 and then mosy over to the story to buy the disks and the key and then unlock it and start playing as soon as I get back. As for bandwidth, it'd dirt cheap nowadays and there's also always bittorrent. For something like ET:QW where you'll constantly have very many people connected to the tracker everyone should get very decent speeds (assuming they're not behind a college firewall ~_~.) Heck, the devs could offer some sort of a "kill credit" for those who donate their bandwidth for uploading. It'd be sort of cheap, but I know very very stat whores would have the torrent open if it means they could say they have 50 more kills a day or something =p

I usually prefer having the boxed version over a downloadable one, but anything can happen to the discs. So an option if you already have the code would be to download it later as a replacement measure. Just an idea though.

I prefer to have the game in boxed version, dont trust steam.

I would prefer getting it on Steam. Isn't Activision the publisher for ET:QW? There're a few Activision games available on Steam already. I really hate having to bother with keeping the disc in the drive to play and I don’t like using cracks to get around that problem. Some THQ games like Company Of Heroes, and Dawn Of War have removed the need to keep the discs in the drive to play. That would be a good solution to the problem too.

I'd like to see a downloadable version. Yeah Steam was a nightmare back in my 56k days and EA link sucks. But I'd like to think that ID would serve us better. Face it its a game we are all going to play online so why not download it

I've noticed the common practice these days is to sell the game normally (boxes, CDs) to begin with, so they get their money's worth from the packaging, etc. Then offer a downloadable version later. But they want that initial production of retail versions off the shelves before giving people the alternative to download it.

I really don't see why people rant on steam, maybe it's the old version but believe it or not valve are one of the good guys. you don't need the internet to play SP games, just tell steam to work offline, and if you don't like news pop up's, disable them. could not be easier.

my experience with EA Link however, goes like this:

connecting...
reconnecting....
connecting...retrieving content...
reconnecting...
uninstall

what's also great is now steam supports Prey, so i just installe it, and now can play Prey where ever, but unfortunately they don't support any steam games/apps which don't come with serial keys :( too bad about thief 3 :/

For real, I'd be glad to have ET:QW running on Steam.

I wouldn't buy it through Steam, though, unless I could get it earlier than the retail version, or if it would be significantly cheaper.
