Right-click your ETQW shortcut, go to properties and in the target line add
+set r_mode 4 +set r_displayRefresh 60 afterwards it should look like this:
"C:\Program Files\id Software\Enemy Territory - QUAKE Wars\etqw.exe" +set r_mode 4 +set r_displayRefresh 60
Click apply and run the game, those commands will make the game run at 800x600 @ 60hz and I think nearly every monitor will support that.
Once you are in-game you can remove those commands from your shortcut and change the resolution normally, via the options menu.
