Default How to ski with the Icarus - video

What is skiing?

Skiing is a winter sport enjoyed by millions.

In the game Tribes, you could hold down your jump button when going down a slope to 'ski' down it - sliding quickly across the ground and increasing speed. Combined with the jetpack, this let players fall from incredibly high, and then ski down one side of a valley and up the other, hitting their jets at the apex and then repeating this motion across the terrain to move very fast.

Skiing in Quake Wars is not as fast as Tribes, and has a few quirks that make it different, but I've gotten faster than a full speed Hog. Those high speeds are not very useful though, as you need to start near the tops of mountains, but you can still get going fast on shorter slopes.

So how do you ski in Quake Wars?

To learn how to ski, first learn how to slide. Grab an Icarus and move, then hold down the jump key while moving forward. You will slide across the ground; try and slide in circles.

Now add the Icarus jets into the mix. Find a slope in the terrain and jet over it, so that when you fall - you will hit the ground on the slope. As soon as you hit the slope, hold down your jump button. You are now skiing.

There is one more quirk to Quake Wars skiing that will get you going fast. Tap your 'jets' when you hit the ground (along with holding jump), and as you are sliding across the terrain, and you will gain higher speeds. Make sure you are using the forward (on foot) key also during any ski.

To recap :
- In an Icarus, fly up over a slope and then fall into it
- Hold down the jump button for the entire ski
- as soon as you hit the slope, tap your jets
- as you are skiing, tap the 'jets' whenever you hit the ground, or when you need to gain speed on a relatively flat surface.

Other Notes

As soon as speed starts to bleed off, jet up and look for another slope to land on to continue the ski. If non suitable slopes are around, continue to tap jets to hop and keep your speed.

Why Ski?

It lets you get places fast. Using skiing on Sewer, I can get to the first capturable spawn easily before any GDF arrive nearby. Using the sewer runoff section, you can half-pipe your way from one end of the map to the other very quickly.

It will help you avoid being killed when you hit the ground. Is that Titan waiting for you to land so it can fire on you? Try landing on a slope and skiing away fast - in effect making you a harder target on ground, like you are in the air.

Bare in mind that the laws of Quake-engine physics also seem to apply to the Icarus, making it a rather beautiful fusion of tribes 2 and quake 3 movement. So, on top of the acceleration you gain from skiing, you can apply strafe-jumping techniques to reach even faster speeds.

nice tip. Tried it a little sometimes because i know something like this from quake4 but there was it compined with strafejump and then duck. Always pressing forward. So thanks for the info know sliding should work for me

It was crouchsliding, I don't know how similar these techniques will be but I should think Skiing would require more skill.

i think its discussable... you could do extremly difficult jumps with the crouchslide.

skiing is nice indeed. good if you fast wanna get to GDF base to hack their deployables, but other than that it's not really that useful :<

Anything that makes you faster is useful.

I almost always reach the EMP objective area before all other Strogg - 2 hops, one big jet to drop on the cliff just outside the Strogg spawn, and then ski to the obj. This lets me have an APT down near the objective in the fastest possible time.

Then there is simply getting into the Sewer underground part faster. Fly out the Strogg base so you land on the small incline just outside of it... ski that into the base doors and cut down your time getting inside by up to 1/2. I've stopped hacks that were in progress from spawning at the Strogg base and skiing inside...you'd never reach it in time just running.

The video I made was just to show the basics. If you still think skiing is useless, then perhaps I should make a vid of using it in a game; ie using skiing in normal play.

I can't wait to try this myself, but, please, show us.

LOL!
First day I got the beta, I was looking forward to using the Icarus like I did in Tribes. I can't wait for a mod to pop up transforming Quake Wars into a Tribes - esque mod.

True. I rarely get high altitude in an icarus. I mostly strafe jump with small thruster boosts. I can get sick speeds.

Yes. That is how mine is setup.

RMB is Iron Sights while infantry, Sprint while in vehicles (jet).

Code:
// RMB - Iron Sights (Infantry) - Sprint/Jet/Nitrous (Vehicles)
bind MOUSE2 "_altattack" "" "default"
bind MOUSE2 "_sprint" "" "vehicle"

Well the Strogg do have the advantage of being able to Skii on their Icarus, the GDF can strafe whilst para-dropping and then continue it with a bunnyhop. This is best demonstrated on the Hilltop Spawn. Para-drop down and air strafe to your left (always hold down sprint), then continue to bunnyhop. If you hit everything right, you can make it inside the compound fairly quickly. ET:QW Movement Physics are very interesting to fiddle with. I especially like the design of their bunnyhopping...

You can get yourself from standing still to 1000+ velocity in 5 seconds by using strafe-jump motions in conjunction with skiing. Going out of the way to find a mountain to slide down is impractical.

Whenever I get out of the Strogg base (after EMP is capped) I always ski down the little ramp just outside of the shields to get a big boost to get me to the sewer entrance. Works like a charm and gets you there faster than anyone in a vehicle or someone just jetting straight up and over.

I can't wait for a tribes-esque sort of mod.
